info via chuffster 2005, The 2012 Simon West directed action sequel “The Expendables 2” starring Sylvester Stallone is coming to Blu-ray Disc on November 20th via Lionsgate. The film co-stars Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Jean Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Tech specs for this release are really interesting as they include full 1080p Hi-Def video in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio with DTS Neo:X 11.1 and DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio. This, as far as I know, is THE FIRST Blu-ray Disc release to get the DTS Neo:X 11.1 treatment. This should be really awesome for those on the proper AV receivers and speaker systems to decode this. The release will come with both a Digital Copy and an UltraViolet digital copy of the film.
The title is available for PRE-ORDER over at Amazon with a $27.99 price tag. The bonus materials set to be included on the release are listed below.

Audio commentary with director Simon West
“Gods of War: Assembling Earth’s Mightiest Anti-Heroes” featurette
“Big Guns, Bigger Heroes: The 1980’s and the Rise of the Action Film” featurette
“On the Assault: The Real-Life Weaponry of The Expendables” featurette
“Guns for Hire: The Real Expendables” featurette
Deleted Scenes
Gag Reel

11.1 HOLY CRAP

Any info on whether this movie was mixed in 11.1 or if it was just 'upconverted' like most Lionsgate releases?

11.1 is insane, I wonder who even has a receiver that supports that...

Maybe, but Red Tails definitely had an 11.1 theatrical mix whereas I can't find any evidence of Auro or Atmos screenings of Expendables 2. I'm gonna predict another Lionsgate upconvert.

How is this really any better than something a little beefier than Dolby ProLogic IIx post-processing layered on top of a 5.1 discrete mix? It's matrix logic steered and not 11.1 discrete channels anyway (there is no 11.1 discrete format okayed by the Blu-ray Association... until probably 4k). 7.1 discrete is more than enough for home theater use. It just confuses things further.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

Eh?

DTS:Neo X is not a sound format, it is just a post-process. I'm guessing this disc will have a 7.1 main track that has been "mixed" with the post process to take advantage of it in home delivery.

Interesting. Watching this one....

It has a 7.1 English audio track just like many other Lionsgate action releases including it's predecessor.

I will be curious to see if they have a separate 7.1 track that is specially encoded (but still matrixed) for 11.1 Neo:X optimization or if they just use the main 7.1 track for that purpose. If you read the DTS literature (see white paper linked below), they make it sound like Neo:X 11.1 can be encoded "discretely" using the existing delivery chain but I'm pretty sure that is just marketing/hyperbole.

http://www.dts.com/~/media/0d70c54ba95946688c714fd62ad24bf7/DTS_NeoX_White_Paper.pdf

I tend to prefer Audyssey DSX over Neo:X processing but would be willing to sample this one if they indeed have a Neo:X optimized soundtrack. Wish it was a movie I actually cared to watch!

Exactly. It sounds to me like what Neural Surround has attempted to do.

If that is what has happened...awesome, as long as the results are there. Would be a cool trend as long as the main 7.1 track is not compromised at all in the process.

I like where this is going. smile.gif No discrete Channels but its a start. Hopefully other movies will follow! Since Dolby Atmos is pretty much dead - why not a DTS Neo: X standard along with some fancy 4k discs? I'm ready.

Atmos is far from dead. Since it represents a total sea change in the way that movie soundtracks are created, it's being rolled out slowly and carefully.

In the absence of any Dolby Atmos Home Theater product, there is no reason the studios couldn't render a (Dolby Atmos) movie down to ("generic 7.1 Standard plus Front Heights and Wides") 11.1 PCM and then use the DTS Neo:X 11.1-to-7.1 matrix and DTS-HDMA 7.1 encode technologies to build a "best efforts" 11.1 Neo:X, 7.1 DTS HD-MA BD of the movie.

Of course, there's also no reason Dolby couldn't more actively support 9.1-to-7.1 matrixing in order to add 'near discrete' height content optimized for subsequent DPLIIz playback into 7.1 TrueHD soundtracks...?! biggrin.gif

Theoretically they could even produce a TrueHD track that is optimized for Neo:X 11.1! Or a DTS-MA track that is optimized for DPLIIz. Imagine the potential for consumer confusion...although fortunately the 7.1 discrete channels would still work fine on 5.1 and 7.1 systems.

This has to be a faulty pirate release, otherwise the Expendables 2 Blu-ray is going to be full of DVNR + fake grain!!!

This one looks good...

but this one not so much (Digital Zoom + DVNR + Fake Grain?).

It definitely did. I think people's expectations for this should be lowered -- especially if they didn't see it in theaters and have no idea what they're dealing with here. lol.

Yamaha has had 11.2 in their flagship RX-Z series for years now (at least 6 years, likely more)

it's not 11 discrete channels though, the top 4 corners are presence channels only, digitally matrix'd.
