I'd recommend not getting the UK version as it has inferior picture, sound and extras which is normal for an EIV release.

Thanks for the info! I wanted to replace but don't want to go through this again.

I'm glad they didn't go that direction. There's some dark humor in the background but Judge Dredd is deadly serious and I'm glad they didn't make a farce of teh character like they did with the Stallone flick.

Agreed. I really liked the Dredd humor (which was often delivered very efficiently using just a "yeah" or a kind of grunt biggrin.gif)

The movie used him as the butt of jokes for this very reason.
Of course, the dude they brought in to do this was horribly off-key too.wink.gif

First of all, Thanks dvdmike007!

This movie was the biggest surprise for me of all the recent releases including "Total Recall" and "Looper"!
Not to say those two weren't good movies but because, from some of the reviews I read from folks who saw it at the theater, I was expecting this flick to be a big disappointment. Well, it wasn't! Even with the so called limited budget I thought they did a marvelous job with this movie and I really hope they make a sequel because if they don't that will be the real disappointment.

Yep, that's why I just rented this movie because of some negative reviews but it will be my next blu ray purchase. It is so nice to get these wonderful surprises once in awhile!

I finally made it back to Best Buy today. Other than saying they weren't supposed to allow opened movies to be traded for a different title, they did let me
exchange it for a different title. I'll have to get Dredd from Amazon.

i'm starting to think wal-mart is also getting bad discs... 3 copies and all of them do the same thing in my BDP-S580... the disc plays without errors but it makes this noticable humming/buzzing noise that i just don't get with any other disc

i would like to watch my bluray copy of this movie but i would like to not have it sound like it's going to damage my player

i asked earlier but got no answer... has anyone else had this issue?

Did a quick test on my Amazon copy today and it starts and plays with no issues. The Best Buy copy spun
endlessly making lots of noise and finally showed an "unknown Disc" on the screen.

I have watched the DVD disk and 2d on the 3d blue ray disk and there seem to be slight differences. ( I mean differences in editing and sequencing) anyone else notice anything different between dvd and blue?

Got mine and saw it last night. Everything worked just fine. The 3D, I thought, was somewhat affected by the graininess at times, but it particularly shines in the more stylized drug-induced scenes. In other words, I did like it in 3D and wouldn't have it any other way.

A gritty movie which I found very pleasing and which will be getting multiple views at home! cool.gif

Amazon copy plays fine in Sony BDP-S590. Took a bit longer than usual to load up, which had me worried, but once it loaded, it was fine. Watched it in 3D.

I did notice some occasional video noise in a handful of shots.. not just grain, but almost "scratch"-like video artifacts, horizontally banded across the screen. They always held for exactly one shot, which tells me it's something in the source and not the transfer. Other areas had more normal film grain (although I noticed a lot of the grain was static, which was kind of annoying). Honestly, I only noticed the normal grain because I was looking for it, it wasn't distracting at all.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mister Anderson.

I seem to remember "Slo-MO+ and its effects were discussed near the opening on the dvd and that
this was missing on the blue version as "slo-mo" was not discussed until they dealt with the competing drug dealers.

It's mentioned offhand at the beginning, but the discussion doesn't take place until after the Judges arrive, and Dredd finds the cold burns on the guys lips. The medic describes the drug to Anderson, who hadn't heard of it before. That's the exposition. It's only like two lines, if you sneeze you'll miss it.

Sly was extremely serious; Rob Schneider provided the humor. And without the funny, it'd probably be about as dull as this sequel.

If you watch one of the out takes from the HOBBIT you will see Gandalf and Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Thorin Oakenshield, Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, and Ori. running thru Mega-City to get some "Slow-Mo".
this allows Jackson to stretch one book into three movies.

Received the Hong Kong release today.

The good news, is that it doesn't have that weird coloured noise, that's on the UK and US releases. The contrast is normal and while there is grain, it is again, not to the exaggerated levels of those releases. On the downside, it is a tad on the dark side,(not as dark as the Polish, though), with black crush and detail lost in shadows.

Comparing this shot here from the Polish, I can definitely see what's on the wall there, on the HK, whereas it's just black in this screenshot:
http://poral.eu/screen/BLU_RAY_1920_1080/d/dredd/dredd_3d_14.png

As for the 96hz 5.1 True HD mix, it's also a mixed bag. It's aggressive as hell, with the dialogue channel mixed a shade lower than I'd like, with the surrounds overpowering it now and again.

Only extra, is an HD trailer.

I find myself still preferring the US release, as the HK disc is still too dark, IMO.

Raoul,

Thanks for the review. Just curious - For the slow mo scene when someone gets shot in the cheek, and blood splatters towards the screen, does it break the 2.35 screen barrier out to 1.85? A few of the online trailers had this and some reports have said it was in the movie this way as well. But the region 1 disc keeps it all at 2.35.

Edit: Here is an example- Shown roughly 45 seconds into this one minute clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJa7QzaajBw

No, it does not break the frame. I had that in mind, while viewing the disc.

As it stands, the US release appears to the least poisonous of the various Dredd discs out there.

The UK has the contrast boosted and a muddled sound mix. The Spanish release looks the same as the UK.
The Polish release is so dark, it's almost rendered unwatchable in places. The HK disc is also dark. Not as dark as the Polish disc, but still major black crush and loss of detail.

Scandinavian releases appear to match the US disc.

French and German remain to be seen.

They do make it hard for anyone to get perfection! I may as well wait even longer and see what other regions kick out transfer wise.

Last night watched Judge Dredd -2012. Not the best movie, but it is DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack.
(actually my 16 year old boy, who plays Call of Duty on the PS3, said very boring movie, very explicit blood scenes, and left mid-way thru, hey they were stuck in a housing complex, killed lots of people, and eventually got out)

I listened in DTS NEOx mode, fantastic 11.1 experience!
Totally enveloping surround.

I'd say to others the Audio surround mix is subperb, 9 of 10, the story line IMO avg 6 of 10.

I have it on a 1 day redbox free rental, used the promo code "sweet".
