I received the French 2D BD and although I wasn't fussed on the audio mix, the PQ has none of the issues apparent on the US disc.

No drop outs on my redbox bluray rental played thru PS3 and Denon 4520CI.

I have no issues with the audio on the US disc. There are PQ issues, ramped up contrast, brightness and digital noise, which the French disc does not have. The black levels are perfect, unlike the various other releases I've seen, which are too bright, or too dark.

I was shocked by how much digital noise there was in some of the dark-ish scenes. You go from a very good looking image to one that looks like it came from a 2nd tier cable channel. Still, a very enjoyable movie - for me.

How is it, Duke, that you even get your hands on so many copies made for different countries? eek.gif

FWIW, mine is US and I think it's great! 7.1 is awesome, but I truly envy those who can go Neo:X up to 11.1! tongue.gif

Yeah, let's not go there.

I resisted that huge French tinned release, I'm proud of that, lol

Meh, I’d say it would have made a better rental than purchase – I bought the 3D version from Amazon. 3D was off for me and I couldn’t figure out what was up – it was like one eye was off just a bit here and there and I couldn’t get it ironed out no matter what adjustments I made. My tv has adjustments for favoring one eye even and that didn’t do the trick for me. Distance, pop out, etc. didn’t fix it either.

The slow-motion effects as they describe in the extras was pretty cool combined with the 3D I will say. I can’t say that I agree with the commentary that the bloody, gory, bullets through heads and blood spewing were ‘beautiful’ or whatever they called it. It was just gory looking to me personally, but maybe I’m ‘squeamish.’

Overall, I’m not really sure I’m onboard with the theme of the movie/comic generally. I’m not too much for Judge, Jury, and Executioner. I’m more of a 3 Branch System of Government kind of guy myself (with a healthy 4Th Estate pulling its duty) ensuring the adherence to Due Process, etc.

It’s just a movie though. I get it that it’s a futuristic dystopian society depiction, etc. It was enjoyable. Pretty awesome sound fx – the lfe when they went slow-motion was cool.

Does the French 3D disc have 2D on as well? as if that is the best version I may have to go for it.

Thanks smile.gif Yes I did notice on Amazon the two versions, so thought best to ask and maybe not trust the translator before buying as hey I might as well go for it as the films worth it.

Does anyone have a solution for me. I would like to get a better copy of this film (I have the Australian release which is the same botched release as the uk release which has numerous issues including which includes a boosted contrast and the two images seem to have slightly different color timings in some areas which can cause some eye strain). My problem is the US release seems to be region locked, can anyone confirm that is the case? If so are their any other releases that will work on a region b player that don't feature the problematic UK/Aus transfer?

Yes, the US release is region locked. I wouldn't bother with it anyway, as it has issues of its own.

The French release is Region B and has a solid transfer.

I now have the Japanese release, which is the French PQ and US audio, so the best of both worlds.

Hmm, the Japanese release is also a steelbook but rather expensive. Decisions, decisions.

Can you confirm the image has the some color balance in both eyes in 3d as that was by far the most aggravating thing in the europe/au release. Also it doesn't have forced subtitles does it?

edit: from reading around it doesn't appear to have a 3d version available though hard to confirm, any details on this?-

Correct. I have zero interest in 3D, so it wasn't a concern.

From what I've read, the 3D transfer is much the same across the board.

I'm sure we would be hearing more people complain if the contrast and colors where different in both eyes on all 3d transfers. The american and aussie/eu are different in 3d (I know this as a friend has the american release which doesn't have these issues I am having in 3d, sadly I do not have a region free blu-ray player).

I think I shall give the french release a shoot as that seems the better release, it will cost me more then I would like but I do very much so want a good copy of this film.

Just finished watching the french release and the difference to the Australian release is massive. The colors aren't over saturated excluding the slow mo scenes, the blacks and colors are the same in both eyes (though there are a few problematic shoots that appear to be a result of how the film was shoot, so not a transfer issue) and the image also looks more detailed. Put simply if you have the choice between the au/uk release or the French release, spend a little bit more if need be and get the French release. Note it plays by default with french audio but this can be changed to English lossless and subtitles are not forced on.

i definitely noticed a difference in contrast from eye to eye in the 3d US version, causing eye strain. am i understanding correctly that the french release has a different 3d transfer?
