Burbank, Calif., November 15, 2012 -- The Warner Archive Collection (WAC) – the Warner Bros. Digital Distribution (WBDD) division dedicated to releasing on DVD previously unavailable films and television shows – today announced the launch of its first Blu-ray™ titles. The two titles, Deathtrap and Gypsy, will debut on November 20. Beginning in February 2013, WAC expects to release a minimum of one to two Blu-ray titles per month. Future titles include The Hudsucker Proxy and Fearless.

WAC reports that the Blu-ray discs will be replicated in limited quantities and fulfilled on demand. All releases will leverage high quality 1080p masters. In many instances, as with Deathtrap, the films will be available for the first time for home viewing in their original widescreen format.

Starting as a modest initiative, WAC has quickly grown to become a new business model for the studio and a recognized industry leader. Since launching in March 2009, WAC has released more than 1,500 films, short subjects, TV movies and mini-series that otherwise would not have been available, providing a valuable service to film lovers everywhere.

Now, WAC’s entry into the Blu-ray market is the latest example of its fast growth and increasing popularity with consumers who have embraced the technology as the standard for the highest quality home movie viewing on disc. This year, domestic sales of catalog titles on Blu-ray grew 22% in the third quarter from a year earlier. In fact, Blu-ray sales have shown impressive gains every quarter in 2012, continuing the trend set in 2011 over 2010 when sales were up 20%.[1]

In making the Blu-ray announcement, WBDD President Thomas Gewecke said, “This is an important innovation that fulfills consumer demand for high definition releases that otherwise would not be available in physical formats. We’re excited to have the opportunity to further expand the Warner Archive Collection into the Blu-ray marketplace with an impressive slate of releases.”

It looks (to me, at least) that if you are the "thread starter", then the option to edit a thread title is there. When you open the thread page, just below the final post and just above the "Reply" box, you should see some controls, one of which is "Edit Thread", which is visible if you are the thread starter.

I've revised thread titles using "Edit Thread" in the past. Hope this helps.

Original version of THX-1138 please, Warner!

Oh, who am I kidding? Lucas has probably made sure his preferred versions of THX and Graffiti are the only ones out there, despite not owning any kind of copyright on those films.

Is this how I'm finally going to get The Iron Giant on Blu-ray?

What I hope for is more 30's to 50's titles, like the Spencer Tracey films:
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941)
Fury (1936)
Father of the Bride (1950)
Bad Day at Black Rock, etc

The James Cagney films:
Yankee Doodle Dandy
One, Two, Three
White Heat, etc

The Henry Fonda films:
Mister Roberts
Jezebel

As for Deathtrap, I already saw it when I watched the superior Sleuth with the same lead actor.

There are probably a ton of films that deserve Blu-ray treatment but might not sell enough to warrant a wide release, so I'm glad they are willing to take an approach like this rather than just letting these films sit in the vault.

As far as Bad Day at Black Rock goes (one of my personal favorates), TCM has shown a superb print lately, so it appears it's been restored (or they found a superb print somewhere).

This is great news, because it has been confirmed that at the moment these will be pressed Blu-rays and not BD-Rs. Early plans seem to be 2 titles per month, so that means 24 catalog WB catalog discs coming out per year that would have never seen a general release. There is hope now the Hammer movies and many other niche films will get released on BD.

Potentially great, if they are new scans and not ancient dvd masters for the price WB is asking.

My guess is they will be from scans prepared for the TCM-HD cable channel and possibly some prepared for archiving by Warner.

This is a very interesting turn of events. I for one would like to see current TV shows that have been broadcast in HD for some years now available on Blu-ray instead of DVD. This REALLY irks me as for those of us wanting an archive of episodes for posterity have to settle for a downgrade in video quality. mad.gif Maybe, they will open this up to television.

Just goes to show that the industry never completely 100% shifted off of DVD to BD. I was not sure if the production of BDs were all that more expensive for them. If they can set up this MOD operation for movies then I guess it probably isn't and the public has been shafted all along.

Keeping my fingers crossed. I for one have been buying through the Warner Archive and the corresponding sites for the other studios. Looking forward to this.

No...LOL, and yeah, i know its not WB, but they need to release it..the first 2/3rds of the movie are so good, kind of like the first 2/3rds of Lost in Space.

It had it's moments, I found the last act underwhelming, comical in fact.

Mousetrap.. I mean Sleuth... wait no, Deathtrap:

The caps are ok, wont knock your socks off. There's some strange artifacts in the film grain, maybe the jpg compression? In image 22 the guy in the grey outfit has a EE halo around him.

I think this is based on Cher's song, Gypsy:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Gypsy-Blu-ray/59960/#Review

I am more impressed with this one, looks film-like in the caps. For those that claimed these would be 25 gb disks only, the review specs says otherwise.

Thank you for that note. It probably answers a question I had, which is:

Doesn't the Blu-ray format have some kind of block in place to prevent making or playing BD-R discs that have AACS copy protection? (That block was put in place so people could not make direct copies of store-bought discs if I remember right.) If I am correct about it, then WB either HAS to make "real" discs or they would have to omit AACS copy protection. (Actually, I think I remember reading of ANOTHER block in place to prevent making Blu-ray movie-format discs without AACS as well.)

No, I'm betting that the studio is waiting for another Brad Bird 'kid's movie' release to pair The Iron Giant with. I remember reading that Bird had done work on the blu ray release, then the news dried up. I don't see IG as a burn on demand title.

OK, lets see how it's going over at Warner Archives Blu-ray. Not so good. Only 4 releases so far and their latest finally got released after a 3 month delay due to a gun jumping ****-up. I'm not impressed.
