Time named it the worst film of the year, over Battleship and Jack and Jill! and yet some reviewers called it life changing, divisive does not come into it!

I liked it okay, but didn't love it. The whole same actors/multiple characters thing just struck me as bizarre... I didn't get it. Also I didn't feel there was much of a payoff/climax/resolution of all the strands, whatever you would call it. Worst film of the year? rolleyes.gif Though I guess I could see how it could really rub you the wrong way. Life changing? I pity your life eek.gif

I saw it in theaters and found it excellent. The subject is fascinating and intriguing to me, so I went biased I guess. Not sure what's bizarre about the same actors/multiple characters thing, as its relevance is a huge part of the premise (does that make sense? it's still early... wink.gif) And the music was breathtaking by the way. Visually amazing at times, I'm looking forward to seeing it again on Blu-ray, it should look fantastic. As noted on another thread by another member, it's kinda sad that people constantly complain about Hollywood's lack of originality, then you have a film like this and nobody makes the effort of seeing it. But they still complain of course. It is a daring movie, far from being "perfect" (what is anyway?) and I loved every minute of it. To me it was one of the best I've seen this year.

Time can't properly review Presidents and world events, let alone films. rolleyes.gif

I find the premise intriguing and look forward to seeing it. I didn't realize it already came and went...

I haven't got to see this yet as the times for showing were awful and really didn't work for my schedule at all. Annoying. I'll have to catch this when it hits home video.

I really wanted to see it though. The extended trailer for this looked amazing!

I was lucky to find a theater in montreal that was still showing it. I went on its second week only, and it was nowhere to be seen. I guess some theaters after seeing its poor performance on its first weekend didn't even bother afterwards.

Must be the Atlas Shrugged curse or people got tired of another Tom Hanks movie.

Maybe the choice of the title was not thought thru, but the Wachowskis do have a record of very creative visuals at the very least.
Might do a blind BD buy.....

It's really worth seeing for anyone even remotely interested in destiny, love, death, our place in the world, life and its opportunities (even the ones we missed as Benjamin Button would say...), science-fiction, drama, etc... I would go for a blind if I were you. Then again I'm not you wink.gif

Are you referring to the title of the monstrously huge best-selling book that they adapted?

No, I am referring to using the word "Atlas" anywhere in the title at a time when the Rand movie(s) were playing on the same marketing landscape.

They should have re-named it "Clouds" or some other damn thing.

It's an overlong version of "The Fountain" with more characters and more time layers. It's more ambitious but I think "The Fountain" is the better film, formally and content wise. It probably would work better as mini series.

Atlas Shrugged, Part II barely grossed $3 million this year on a budget of $10 million.

Yeah, I'm sure the Wachowskis were quaking in their boots about the possibility of people confusing their movie, which is named after an extremely popular and award-winning recent novel, being confused with some other movie that nobody saw.

Which is kind of amusing because there were supposed to be another 2 or 3 sequences in The Fountain that would have almost doubled the length of the film. They were released as a graphic novel, IIRC.

As much as I like the directors other films I found Fountain almost unwatchable, the only reason I bought it was because I liked the graphic novel although I would not call it great.

I really loved the trailer for The Fountain, but I found the movie something of a letdown. Not epic enough for me and it seemed too tidy of a film with everything wrapped up in a neat bow. I know it had budget issues, but it felt too small. Cloud Atlas is more of the epic that I wanted from the Fountain, but I didn't feel all of the ideas came together as well as they could have. Ambitious filmmaking, but it's more interesting than it is great. I guess I'm still looking for that great epic metaphysical love story that transcends life and death, and time and space.

It's math really....
(Atlas + movie)(18 months of horrible reviews/word of mouth about movies with the word "atlas" in it) = DON'T PUT THE WORD ATLAS IN THE TITLE OF YOUR MOVIE, MORON

Nobody saw the Atlas Shrugged movie. Nobody read any reviews of the Atlas Shrugged movie. Nobody even knew that the Atlas Shrugged movie existed.

The failure of Atlas Shrugged had absolutely nothing to do with the failure of Cloud Atlas. There's no correlation to be found there.

I have to respectfully disagree.

Many of the people attracted a Wachowski movie or a movie of this type in general, often do read film reviews.
The reviews of the Rand films in the "press" were widely negative in the extreme.
Even if said reviews were not read in their entirely very often, the Headlines above the articles usually made it clear what the verdict was.

The word "atlas" is not used very often, especially in regard to Hollywood movies, it would stand out in people's short-term memories IMO.

From decades of standing in line to see a movie I encountered quite a few who were going to the wrong film because it had a similar name to what they wanted to see. In fact it is a well known phenomena, at least one independent released several videos with either the same title or similar title to cash in on popular films. Dont understatement the stupidity of the masses, politicians dont.
