Per this thread, I have been made aware of Amazon Japan's options. There are three flavors, regular, limited, and some sort of Amazon exclusive version that has a buttload of goodies. Prices range from $230 for the regular to $500 for the exclusive version.

1080i 4:3 (DV masters? upscaled?)
DTS-HD MA 5.1
PCM 2.0

I don't read Japanese so I don't see mention of English dub and no mention of subs. Here's hoping that it comes with all language options... (Steve Blum's voice acting would be wasted!)

Hmm...

I'm cautiously intrigued. I'll wait for word on whether this is an upscale (I suspect it has to be).

Thanks for the heads-up!

I can wait until Funimation or whoever release it Stateside. I severely doubt it'll have English subs, unfortunately.

So what, another three years for the NA set? IIRC, that's how long it took Lain to get over here. frown.gif

Or possibly longer, as I'm not sure the license has been rescued yet, since the Bandai collapse.

Yeah, it's possible that it was mastered to 1080i video during that awkward phase of HD programming in the late 90s, but I suspect it's just an upscale... which begs the question "why not upscale to 1080p?" But I've scratched my head at a lot of Japanese anime Blu-ray transfers. Either way, I'm stoked for lossless audio.

No kidding. GitS SAG and 2nd Gig still haven't made it here yet. $800 for the complete Blu-ray set? Hmm... mad.gif

Some shows were animated or mastered at weird frame rates that would make converting to 1080P trickier than it should be.

Those screens look better than I expected. Maybe there's hope for a release of this master in another market.

Getting a UK release next year, allegedly, from new label Anime Limited.

The screenshots have moved.

I'm more optimistic. There's a very clear and obvious improvement in detail. These must be from an HD source.

Damn. I want this, but I'm not paying that kind of money for it. Guess I'll just wait for a release in the States.

If you can play Region B blu-rays, the blu-rays are coming out this year in the UK. You can pre-order now directly from amazon.co.uk

Part 1 comes out July 29th, and Part 2 is due for release on September 23rd.

More info may be found here - http://www.uk-anime.net/newsitem/Cowboy_Bebop_Blu-Ray_Collector's_Edition_available_for_pre-order.html

Very tempting. I can play/backup Region 2, but I'd prefer Region 1 for compatibility with all my stuff. I'll hold out for news of the US release before buying this, but if no word comes by the time this hits, then I'll get on the preorder!

Remember it could be awhile before it hits the U.S. The Japanese owners will likely delay licensing it out to other Region A territories, in an attempt to milk their domestic sales as much as possible.

There's a big ol' "2" on the box spine, so I don't think so.

That is very unlikely. Japan doesn't mind licensing out anime shows to Region B specifically because it doesn't impede their domestic sales. It's one of the main reasons why Aniplex gets stuck having to import the Japanese editions at exorbitant pricing in North America.

The screen captures on this one look pretty good. As much as I like this anime, I'll be waiting for the U.S. release. Even the cheap set at $230 is too much for me.

The version on Amazon.co.uk is $37. It's only the first 13 episodes, but part two will probably be the same cost. So $74 total... assuming the price doesn't drop a bunch in the next couple months.

The '2' relates to the number of discs in the set, but I do think these will be locked tight, as per licensor's instructions.

Looks like we'll get this in the U.S. sometime next year. Cool.
