Gents -

I modded my Oppo 93 for region free bliss, (thanks Zyber) and recently received the ART OF FLIGHT in 3D from Australia (Region B).

The conversion was done by Venture 3D and the results are breathtaking. Very similar in tone to Titanic conversion where everything is seamless. No outer-window shenanigans, just beautiful depth and due to the extreme camera slowdowns, there's mucho time to soak in the 3D image.

Highly recommended.

Gear used:

Oppo 93
Panny 65VT50 ISF calibrated
Marantz SR-7005
B&W 600 series 5.0
HSU sub
Cheap ass HDMI cables

I was thinking to pick up the Region B 3D release, except I was thinking to bypass the region protection from the disc via some method.

It has 1080p24 video right?

So my Australian Art of Flight 3D Blu-Ray was indeed region locked to B, but my above plan worked fine and it plays fine at 1080p24 including the extras, though everyone talks with a funny accent.

I haven't watched it, aside from testing that it plays, so I can't comment on the quality of the 3D conversion.

Cool! I had a forum member who was kind enough to do this for me a while back and send me a copy.

As for the 3d, I thought that particular aspect was good, but nothing special. I was already in love with the 2d version though and the reference audio so the decent 3d was just icing for me.

My copy comes from Germany. It's playable in Region A, with an English Dolby TruHD 7.1 audio track. Pure home theater nirvana.

Yep, same here. Amazing HT ride for sure even if the actual 3d aspect was only average IMO. The disc is amazing in either 2d or 3d and IMO you are not missing much "only" watching in 2d, but I know others disagree. The 3d was just a bit too conservative for my tastes, but again amazing HT experience either way.

Thanks, Toe. Is the 2D version the domestic region A and the 3D region B import?

I hope you like watching people do snowboarding tricks. Because that's literally all the movie is, an 80-minute stunt highlight reel played to really, really loud music.

It wasn't scheduled to ship until next month, so I went ahead and canceled it. Wish NF had it.

Unless it was removed they did have it on Netflix along with the 3d version for streaming.

That is certainly one way to describe this film.

Another way to describe this movie is it is a film about passion and a group of guys who are at the pinnacle of their respective sport. Travis Rice, who is considered THE best backcountry rider in the world, and his group of friends travel all over the globe and put on a jaw dropping show as they do what they enjoy most in life with by far the highest production values ever seen in a snowboard film. While the film is technically about snowboarding, as I mentioned, the heart and soul of the movie is about passion for doing what you love which can be applied to whatever hobby you enjoy most in life. You don't have to be a skier or snowboarder to appreciate the heart and soul of this film, although that will help you fully appreciate the level of commitment these guys have to get to the level they are at.

The cinematography is incredible and seeing these various locations in reference quality video is jaw dropping! As I mentioned before, JVC was even using this transfer to demo their projectors at one point which is one hell of an endorsement for the general PQ.

Audio is top notch from the mix, dynamics, HARD hitting deep bass and so on. In the opinion of many HT enthusiasts (if you read the various threads from the bass thread to general threads on this film) this is one of the best HT rides you can take for A/V.

That is how I would describe the film/disc.

If you don't care about the disc case/artwork, the blu ray can be had for $7.77 and is worth every penny.

The $24 asking price on Amazon is also a no brainer IMO, but if you are unsure just grab that ebay version. for $8, what do you have to loose?

Pure virgin powder snow 3D awesomeness. ...The music tunes are cool too. ...One of my favorite 3D demo BR discs.
And I happen to love those type of documentaries where they fly in choppers and planes across beautiful snow landscapes and mountains*.

Top noth 3D doc on Blu-ray. The aerial shots are magnificent...they use some of the best cameras.

* Spent most of my life working above high...up the mountain's various forests of BC. ...So that kind of stuff suits me perfectly.

Yes, I suppose you could describe the movie that way if you wanted to. My description is more accurate, however.

The movie is a Warren Miller video with slicker photography and a louder soundtrack. It's 80 straight minutes of watching snowboarding stunts in slo-mo, with the occasional 15-second talking head interview in between, most of which go something like: "Whoa! That one was totally gnarly!" If you want to read some deep and meaningful statement about the human spirit into that, be my guest.

Well, I believe my description is more accurate. Apparently we have a different perspective which is fine.

I will just say not everyone I have shown this film to was a skier or boarder, but all were captivated by the experience in my HT.
