It would appear so, though they could easily fit the film on a single BD-50. I'll be interested in seeing the bitrate analysis and breakdown so that we can determine if they gave it a healthy bitrate or if they just broke it up between two discs to keep it in line with the LOTR films.

It's the same as with the theatrical cut - the 3D version is split into two discs, while 2D version is on single disc.

That's somewhat disappointing, as the bit rate on the theatrical release was quite low (only around 20 mbps). Though it seems there was plenty space for a much higher video bit rate. Not sure what the deal was there.

Since it's coming from a studio not known for using high bitrates even when they would help, I would say... no.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

So, does anyone know if this new Extended edition actually has good LFE? Or is it exactly like the theatrical blu-ray?

I cancelled my EE pre-order. As much as I want this, I can't bring myself to pay $39.99 (3D version) for one movie. I'll eventually get it, but its going to have to be on a sale of some sort. Am I the only one that thinks they priced this insane?

It will probably go down to $29.99 for the holidays, right before or just after the next film hits in December.

You get 9 hours of appendices.9 hours.

As LexInVA mentioned the price will go down without a doubt. But as usual, consider what you're buying: a 3D movie, a 2D movie and an insane amount of extras. I agree it's not cheap, but it's way more than just a movie in 3D.

So the extended edition is only 13 minutes longer? I don't have the regular edition. Will it be worth it to get the extended?

It's really not surprising that the Hobbit EE is actually much shorter by comparison than any of the LOTR EEs, when we consider the original novel from which it's being adapted. That said, I only speak for myself, but if I hadn't already bought the regular version, I would go without an hesitation for the EE. I don't think 13 minutes can affect the overall film that much but you still get the original movie with 13 minutes of bonus footage wink.gif …and as we already said above, an indecent amount of extra material.

I'm getting it too (although I have the regular version) so I'll have all the extended editions from both trilogies. Maybe for The Desolation of Smaug I'll wait for the EE before purchasing (and I don't care for 3D so I'm going with the 2D versions).

If anything, the director's cut should have trimmed a lot of the fat (including the entire Radagast sequence). Unlike LOTR and even the EE's, The Hobbit felt bloated in its theatrical cut (like Jackson's version of King Kong). I don't know if I could take even 30 seconds of extra footage. Now granted, The Desolation of Smaug, at least in the trailers, looks a damn sight better than the first part.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

Does the best buy extended 3d steelbook exclusive come with the 2D version also? It's hard to tell on their website.

No, it does not include the 2D disc; which also means no audio commentary.

Best Buy has $25 for the 2D extended and $60 for the 3D extended. Blah! There's also a re-release of the theatrical cut coming at the end of the month, probably with some sort of movie money/ticket discount thing.

I'm with you on this one. I cannot justify $40 for one movie, regardless of the amount of extras.

I'll wait for a $29.99 price or the eventual trilogy boxset. I wants the 3D version...

If the 2D version wasn't $20 at Wal-Mart, I would've passed on it. To be honest, I got it mainly for the extras. As an aspiring filmmaker, I love watching that stuff. Besides, I do plan to watch the EE before I go see The Desolution of Smaug in December.

i'm curious if the $20 Walmart version has all the extras. according to some online sources, the "walmart exclusive" dvd version has 2 dvd's instead of 5, so it's missing many of the extras. there's speculation that the "walmart exclusive" blu ray (as it's listed on walmart.com) might be missing things as well.

looks like theonering.net got confirmation about the various EE versions out there, and the walmart BD is fine (although the walmart EE DVD is incomplete):

http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2013/11/09/81977-warner-provides-information-on-hobbit-auj-extended-edition-targets-dec-1st-for-target/#

There are three products currently available at retailers nationwide:
* 5-disc Blu-ray 3D + Digital HD UltraViolet
* 3-disc Blu-ray + Digital HD UltraViolet
* 5-disc DVD + Digital UltraViolet

Please note that Target will have the Blu-ray and DVD available on December 1st.

In addition to the national product, several retailers have unique product offerings as follows:

Amazon.com
* 3-disc Blu-ray + Digital HD UltraViolet with Bilbo/Gollum Statue
* 5-disc Blu-ray 3D + Digital HD UltraViolet with Bilbo/Gollum Statue

Wal-Mart
* 2-disc DVD including Extended Edition Feature Film and Special Features “The Company of Thorin,” and “Durin’s Folk: Creating the Dwarves”

Best Buy
* 4-disc Blu-ray 3D Steelbook:
- Disc 1: Blu-ray 3D Extended Edition Feature Part
- Disc 2: Blu-ray 3D Extended Edition Feature Part 1
- Disc 3: The Appendices Part 7
- Disc 4: The Appendices Part”

It does NOT come with a 2D version which I found out after opening it up. Luckily I like steelbooks so I still wanted it but I can't watch it as I don't have a 3D TV.
