So this realization just hits me the last time I went out shopping for Blu-rays. I have over 600 Blu-rays, with a lot of them not even watched yet, and I am at the store seeing the same movies that I have been seeing for years, and I just can't find anything that I want to buy. I mean, I have already bought a ton of the movies that I either want or might be interested in seeing. This leaves me with pretty much just the new releases to look forward to.

I mean, don't get me wrong, It's a great situation to be in. It's just it kind of leaves me wondering what else is there to get? It also makes me hold off on buying most of the brand new stuff, waiting a few months for it to go from $25-$30 to $15-$10.

You do know that not buying anything is an option, right?

As for your question, no, I've never reached that point- there are many, many titles I want that have yet to reach Blu-ray. I can only hope that all of them will.

Waste of money IMHO unless I know it's something I'm going to watch more then a few times. I was going through my collection not too long ago and it dawned on me I have a lot of movies that were one timers in terms of viewing and I'm fairly certain I won't watch again...IE the movie 2012! Now a days I only buy movies I know I'll work more then a few times, otherwise just rent or stream them.

How about you start watching some of those unwatched blu-rays you've bought?

There are times when I see my favorite movies in the store that I already own. I wish I could buy them again almost. I don't have nearly as many blu-rays as you do, but I've spent plenty of time browsing movie racks only to leave not having bought anything.

I am pretty picky about what I buy, and I feel like I've bought mostly what I want from the catalogue of titles. Now it's just waiting for the new good ones to come out. The cool thing about owning my favourites is when I upgrade my home theater I go back and watch many of them all over again. Thankfully, they always get better as my theater gets better. wink.gif

Yeah, I have about 800 BD's in my collection and I've slowed down my movie purchases lately just because there really isn't anything out there that I want. I don't go to the movies (can't stand the people that go there) so the way I see it, the BD purchase is pretty much the cost of my two movie tickets. wink.gif I also love the fact that I can watch just about any movie whenever the mood strikes me. smile.gif

There are still plenty of movies I'd like to own on BD - I'm just waiting for many of those to actually be re-released with a decent transfer.

Getting Netflix pretty much killed the majority of my disc purchasing. Now I just buy something if it's not on Netflix(HBO, etc) or it's visually stunning.

For me it's not so much what's left, but when will it come out or when will the price drop.

I have almost 500 discs. I don't have satellite, I don't watch TV (can't stand it). I like to walk over the the shelf and pick out something to watch when I feel like it. I don't go to the theater much. I did catch The Hobbit though (fantastic). Sure, I have some discs that I may only watch once, but they probably only cost me 8-10$, some even less. Cheaper than going to the theater. I have a decent sized screen (119") so watching movies at home is nice.

I do have a few discs that I did a blind on and I know I won't watch them again because they sucked (Spiderman, Abe Lincoln: Vampire Slayer or whatever). So I may end up going through and selling a few soon. More funds for future purchases that I'm looking forward to.

Don't worry, what's left is 4K discs. Which will pretty pretty awesome for movies made with 4K digital cameras or where high quality film elements are available. For instance, Lawrence of Arabia will be breathtaking. Whether or not a resolution higher than 1080p would really improve Vertigo, well I'm not so sure unless we're talking a 200" screen or more.

On the other hand, I'm not sure that copy protection would ever be full proof enough where the studios would give us access to master quality software. If I was to bet, I'd say no.

Blu-ray is starting to approach where DVD was a few years ago. Much of the highly anticipated catalog releases have been released.

All the major Pixar films have been released. Most of the major Disney classics have been released. The Star Wars saga and Indiana Jones series are available. ET, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Lawrence of Arabia, Wizard of Oz, King Kong (33), Citizen Kane, etc... BD is going to have to rely on new content going forward.

Sure there is a dearth of material not available, but the big titles of the last 30-40 years are available. Studios don't have the sure fire catalog available to bank on at this point. Studios aren't going to waste time putting some catalog titles out when the market shows low sales for titles beyond a certain age.

I buy to archive movies that I don't want to be without, and I buy new titles that look good enough to take a chance on. Catalog titles that I need to upgrade from dvd are still rolling in, and there are always a few discs in either format that I know I can sell with no regrets. It may slow down, but it never really stops.

yea, that's pretty much my reaction. My buying has slowed down to a crawl because they aren't releasing enough catalog titles I want to buy.

I think we can all agree that the only major catalogue title left is XANADU.

Having said that...

There seems to be an almost endless list of titles that I want.

My BD collection (about 570 discs at the moment) has developed in a way that I never imagined. I'm primarily a collector of small, obscure, odd or rarely seen titles. Oh, I do buy a few "big" titles but not many. And I honestly doubt if I buy more than one big recent theatrical release per year. So, When I started buying Blu-rays about 5 years ago, my "plan" was that I would get the big titles and recent releases on Blu-ray and just keep my old DVD collection of obscurities. I figured I'd end up buying a few dozen Blu-rays.

Who would have guessed at the explosion of small, rare titles on Blu-ray?

Earlier this week, my copies of IT'S IN THE BAG, OUR MAN FLINT, CLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH and TICKS arrived. I recently found the TV movie version of A BRAVE NEW WORLD. I've got everything from the AU PAIR GIRLS to ZAAT and from ABBA THE MOVIE to ZULU.

So what's left?

At the rate small titles are being released, I'd say there's a few thousand left.

There are some folks trying to get the studios to release some 2.35 movies in anamorphic Blu-ray. Once I get my new 2.35 screen, lens and projector I would be very interested in new and re-purchase of anamorphic Blu-ray titles.

Also keeping a watch on 4K Blu-ray and hardware development.

Honestly, for me, I wish Disney would hurry up and release some of their classic catalog titles that are not only not out on BD, but are either out of print or are non-anamorphic (or full screen) DVDs. Heck, I'd even take combo packs on some of it.

The other wish is that some of those movies that only seem to be available to watch on TCM would make an appearance. There's some great classic acting talent that can't be watched except on that channel.

On the plus side, I thought we'd never see "The African Queen" come out - much less look as good as it did....

Too bad about the lossy audio, but I'll take that over out of print any day.

For me the question is more about: will most material be available to the consumer in any format, or will much of it disappear through attrition and because the studios can't make money out of it?

There is lots of material that I haven't seen in even DVD quality, that I would love to see on Bluray, but it isn't gonna happen.

However, I have pretty much bought all the Blurays I want to own that are available (barring waiting for recent releases to reduce in price).
