A hot topic here on AVS is finding great demo discs. Let's face it, we enthusiasts spend a certain amount of money on AV equipment, and we want to see it perform to its full potential. After a proper calibration, the only thing missing is good demo material. If you haven't already heard of it, I'd like to draw your attention to Samsara—your next reference Blu-ray disc. I'm very surprised to see how little it has been talked about on AVS Forum.

If you enjoy Chronos and Baraka, you will certainly love Samsara. This movie sends you on a journey around the world in 25 countries across five continents that took nearly five years to shoot. Samsara transports you to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial complexes, and natural wonders. No actors, just real-life people in our world today. Director Ron Fricke, who also directed Chronos and Baraka, chose very specific shots and times of day to film certain scenes, which helps make this an incredible voyage. And he shot the entire thing on 70mm film for even greater impact.

Because the film was shot in 70mm, it could be scanned in 8K and mastered in 4K, which creates a stunning picture on any 1080p flat panel or projection system. Samsara lets you demonstrate all aspects of your display system—detail, color, and contrast are all richly represented on this Blu-ray.

The audio was mastered in 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio with an impressive score. Although I wouldn't necessarily recommend this Blu-ray as an audio demo disc, there certainly are moments that present interesting musical sequences and sound effects, which really enhance the user experience.

Even though this isn't a blockbuster, I can almost guarantee that anyone who passes by while you're watching it will immediately be intrigued. This film is visually breathtaking and provides a glimpse into the world we inhabit today. I strongly recommend this Blu-ray regardless of the system you own; you certainly will enjoy it on many different levels.

Happy Viewing

Ditto Vinny,
I have owned Samara for a few weeks and it does indeed deliver the complete experience with regard to realism, clarity, depth, colors, shadow detail...the whole smorgasbord of picture quality.

I enjoyed Baraka, even with some shock visuals and content. I'll give Samsara a try, always willing to try "Reference" recommendations.

Thanks for the insight.

Posted it from my cell phone. Amazon formats differently for mobile users. Try this one:

WARNING to anyone who hasn't seen this before.

There are some very disturbing scenes in this that some of you (more like alot) might find disturbing. I had to stop it about 40 minutes in.

My family and I took great offense to the slaughter of animals being portrayed as some sort of art form for our entertainment. mad.gif

The 'disturbing' imagery is not gratuitous or intended for blood letting titillation. I would not categorize those shots as commentary per se either, in the sense that many may construe.

In no way is it similar to Mondo style.

I have only seen the DVD, which looks excellent, and look forward to seeing the BR. Great soundtrack as well in addition to gorgeous cinematography, even the less picturesque imagery.

Best Regards

Those "disturbing" scenes are the steps leading up to what we all snatch up at the grocery store and throw on the grill. But to your point it can turn a texas cowboy into a artsy vegan...thought provoking at the very least.

I liked this one a little more than Baraka.

I know people might buy something despite the reviews because of a good picture, but I'd figure they'd at least see what the film is about, or look at its rating before actually buying it.

I know a lot of schools that show Food Inc, by the way (even at the middle school level). If that's okay and that's reality, and animal slaughter is the worst of it, then perhaps this would also be "appropriate"?

Actually it is not.

If one's political views are so sensitive, or flimsy, to be offended or challenged by this film then it might be advisable to consider reevaluating them.

What does occur is contrast between more traditional majestic beauty shots and more mundane subject matter.

I find it to be an engaging journey that is one encapsulation of some various contrasting elements of our world. The imagery is and should be thought provoking; if there is any agenda it is one of asking the viewer to contemplate the contrasting aspects of our world and the human experience.

Best Regards
KvE

PS I agree some of the imagery may be objectionable to certain age groups. I do suggest those with children that they should actively view it with them and skip past the few bits that may be too intense for them.

Politics is like a corral, no matter where you are you'll always be shovelling it.

Well mine's paid for & coming no way around it.

I appreciate the heads up on the graphic content, but in the context it has been further explained, I'm sure I'll deal with it. Not sure the kids would have though, so cheers.

As an ex vegan/vego turned carnivore maybe it will be good for me to see.

Food for thought, or is that thought for food?
