I cannot wait for this release! I hope it's in the original aspect ratio.

I was disappointed when the special edition DVD reissue changed the aspect ratio to 2.35:1. I preferred the wider ratio of the prior DVD. I hope that's what we get on Blu-ray.

PETER JACKSON: The theatrical versions are the definitive versions.

I still remember when this film came out on DVD for the first time, it was amazing. They did some a great job, I hope they do the same with the Blu-Ray edition.

It's times like this that I wish I had a larger screen, this is one of my all time favorite movies.

According to digitalbits this is coming from a brand new 4k master. Really looking forward to seeing the results.

A fairly decent master for it in HD has played on the HDNet movie channel, in the past year. I expect this BD to look pretty decent, if not very good.

Just thought I'd chime in and say I can't wait for this movie. I can't believe there's not more talk about it - it's a great film!

Ugh, I was really looking forward to this, but it just got a piss-poor video score from Blu-ray.com (2.5 out of 5) and the screenshots speak for themselves.

While there are some obvious issues in those caps, you could do a lot worse. I think it looks okay. I'll probably wait for some more reviews... I admit that my credulity strains when the same reviewer doesn't see evidence of heavy DNR in this image http://images3.static-bluray.com/reviews/6993_15_1080p.jpg

Of greatest concern, however, is the lack of natural-looking grain. Mr. Kaiser spoke of receiving a master that had been "de-noised by an outside vendor".

Hm, de-noised by an outside vendor? I wonder if HTV-Illuminate got yet another job? Patton, Phantom Menace, BTTF, TNG Season 2.....

just to prevent confusion, that shot is from the abominable "restoration" of Wake in Fright and has nothing to do with this film, aside from blu-ray.com's review for TGE being written by the same guy who gave that complete POS of a transfer a very positive review. Hence, me waiting for more opinions about TGE before foaming at the mouth.

The screenshots over at bluray.com look pretty good to me...about what I expected.

Then again I like the McLintock BD that everyone seems to hate so what do I know.

Not as bad as the HDTV version I saw but overall mediocre with weak detail in the caps and noticeable scrubbing, supposedly an old IP was the source. Beaver shows the many dvds version and each one has different color grading, orangery, greenish, more orangery and now bluish.

I know it's an old movie, but they can do way better. How the West Was Won was an example of how high definition can be fantastic. Of course, there are many other examples but that was just off the top of my head.

Not a very apt comparison, given that HTWWW was shot on the second highest resolution format ever used for movies, twice of even conventional 70mm.
Something like The Sand Pebbles or Guns of Navarone would be a better point of reference, being 4K restorations of 60s anamorphic Panavision shows.

Yep. It seems as if Mr Reuben can sometimes get a bit too enamoured with the party line when putting his reviews together, instead of reaching an entirely objective conclusion. And the sermonising about being a "true purist" with regard to Wake in Fright is a little too on the nose. Still, it's only one man's review at the end of the day, and there are others whose opinions I value a great deal more who have yet to chime in.

Heh. Torsten Kaiser has just said he'll be cutting his administrative ties with blu-ray.com as of now, thanks to Mr Reuben using a prior interview with Torsten (about a completely unrelated master, no less) to support his review of TGE. Instead of appraising the BD for what it is, Reuben has scoured the archives for some pertinent information and bent it to his own ends.

"Administrative ties"? Ooooo, take that. Next time he should make his interviews private.

It figures. So, you think it's fine for Michael Reuben to completely subvert someone's interview to their own ends? Have I got that right? Just want everyone to know exactly where you stand.

Watched this BD tonight and was pretty disappointed. It's better than the DVD, but only because the DVD is so horrible. Color, black levels and contrast are improved, but the image is consistently very soft. I don't see any obvious DNR, just a very soft transfer. Only the most rabid fans should buy this BD, otherwise keep the DVD.

Not great. There was some effort made to give directionality to dialog when the speaker was off screen. I found it distracting and fake.

That's unfortunate. I'm not a rabid fan, but I do like the movie. Still, if the transfer is that craptacular, they're not getting my hard-earned cash.

$10 at Amazon right now. It looks to me like a re-mastering of the original DVD transfer.

Robert Harris' observations re: the Blu-ray here and here.
