http://www.criterion.com/films/27968-shoah

I was living in Washington, D.C., when this film was released, and saw it in two separate showings - as a 9-hour film they showed part 1 separately from part 2.

Later when it was on TV I recorded it on videotape.

It's nice to know that it will be on BD. Here's a review of the MOC DVD version: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews34/shoah.htm :

For the transfer of "Shoah", MoC did their own encode of an expensive telecine that the French owners of the film created in the late 90s/00s. Therefore it differs from New Yorker's R1 transfer. The image has its expectable scratches, dirt and grain but still looks quite clear and sharp. "Shoah", which Lanzmann shot with portable 16mm cameras, will probably never look better than it does here.

It looks like Criterion is getting ready to indeed release the best-looking-ever edition of Shoah, though being shot on 16mm, with some sequences shot on b&w via a camera hidden in and peering through a thin-cloth duffel bag, IIRC, it's never going to look great.

I guess I'll wait for the next B&N Criterion 50%-off sale, as the retail price on this is $99.95.

The 100 bucks for this BD release bothers me...
Not sure if this would be worth the $$$, using the old master is a serious mistake IMO.

I recently upgraded my DVD R1 copy.
Unless there is a full-blown restoration, I think I will stay with what I have.

Considering its length I suppose the MSRP isn't entirely surprising, but ouch. That said Criterion's pre-order price is $20 below that, so I imagine various retailers will hover around there as well; that's not as bad, but I certainly wouldn't mind if it was just a miiiiiite lower...

...and I need your sweet love, Latina T-Mobile girl!

It appears to be a new restoration, not the one used for the MOC DVD that I posted a link to. From Criterion's description:

Disc Features

DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION:

New high-definition digital film restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
Three additional films by director Claude Lanzmann: A Visitor from the Living (1999, 68 minutes), Sobibor, October 14, 1943, 4 p.m. (2001, 102 minutes), and The Karski Report (2010, 54 minutes)
New conversation between critic Serge Toubiana and Lanzmann
Interview with Lanzmann about A Visitor from the Living and Sobibor
New conversation between associate director of photography Caroline Champetier and filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin
Trailer
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Kent Jones and writings by Lanzmann
