This movie which I've been waiting for, is now available for pre-order with a release date of of June 4th.

Now if I could only get RollerCoaster (1977) in Blu.

They should delay it until 2014 to mark the 40th anniversary of the movie. The soundtrack will probably be 7.1 dts master audio with a d-box track, and bonus features like deleted scenes that were created for the tv version.

Sensurround expert Ty Chamberlain provided a detailed report on the last 2007 special edition DVD of EARTHQUAKE, which can be found in the reviews section on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Earthquake-Blu-ray-Charlton-Heston/dp/B00BWJQEFI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1363900819&sr=8-3&keywords=earthquake

Wiki also has a nice section on Sensurround Mod III as was used on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (1978), also due out on bluray by the end of 2013. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensurround I was able to hear Battlestar in Mod III and can confirm the directional bass effects were both noticable and executed effectively.

I'd love it if Universal finally presented the Sensurround process properly, but I'm not holding my breath.

I wish dolby or dts had a surround sound format for home that uses two subs like dolbys baby boom format.

The closest things are Dolby Atmos and DTS MDA. All sound effects can be full frequency and the decoder has front effects and rear "surround" subwoofer outputs. Though, both formats are quite a bit more sophisticated than Sensurround.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

Has there been announcement or are you referring to the insert that came with the BSG?

Do note that Earthquake's use of Sensurround consisted of a control track that enabled a Sensurround generator, so there's not an actual Sensurround audio track to include.

That having been said, it would be nice if Universal could redo the .1 track with the output of an actual Sensurround generator; last I heard Dolby Labs owned a couple functional units.

Extra I wish they'd include - the "Warning" than ran before the film plugging Sensurround.

That would require Universal to part with cash, not something it's known for the BD format.

Of course if you want to roll your own earthquakes at home you could always use a subharmonic synthesizer. DBX makes a nice rack mount one.

A bit of EE but the transfer is fine.

Yes, quite a few catalogue titles were sourced from ancient HD masters made during the DVD years and look awful on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD with all sorts of foul visual quirks. Then you also have those titles which were not encoded well and got low-bitrate releases.

I am glad Paramount parted ways with Universal, Shane looks really promising. Universal would of turned it into To Dnr a Mockingbird:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare7/shane.htm

To be fair Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein looks promising too.

What are you guy's viewing this on? At 1X screen width on a 96" wide scope screen, the picture has that over sharpened look that looks nothing like film. The completely agree with the reviewer over at blu-ray.com.

If you guys think this transfer looks fine, you are easily pleased. No wonder the studios can get a way with releasing so many catalog releases look like this and worse. Universal has been horrible when it comes to this but people keep on buying their half ass releases..

The studios (esp Universal) do WHATEVER THEY WANT despite 'our' quest for faithful transfers...This is probably the only version of 'earthquaake' we'll ever see....

Since you are writing in generalities ever heard of Criterion? Or Gladiator? Universal certainly had it's way with Gladiator (and then some) but got a lot of blow back and perhaps a chewing out by Ridley. In the UK Universal released the first BD and then in the next year another BD (paramount done?) with 'remastered' on the cover and it is hardly the only distributor to have done this.
Sure it's unlikely but never say never. Just one management change could result in a decision to emulate Sony's double dip campaign.

It least EE is coincided, there was a time when getting acknowledgment Universal was doing EE (like the Psycho denials) was like pulling teeth.

Speaking of Sensurround, the Rollercoaster DVD is the only disc I have seen with the audio encoding symbol (the little box with dots) of 1.1 channels.

I hate to say it, but I'd rather take EE than have to keep watching my SD DVD copy.

I wish they would do better, but as many have stated, it's Universal.

(Remember, they actually screwed up the aspect ratio on the Airport Terminal Pack DVD version of Airport 1975…)
