http://www.thewrap.com/movies/article/william-friedkins-misunderstood-1977-sorcerer-getting-re-release-exclusive-81966

"We’re working off the original negative, which is in pretty good shape, but without changing the original concept we have to bring it back in terms of color saturation, sharpness and all the stuff," he said."

With any luck, this will be out on Blu-ray in the 4th quarter of this year (2013). One thing that Friedkin confirmed that's not mentioned in this article is that the studio handling the re-release for it's limited theatrical run and home video release will not be Criterion as some rumors pointed to.

I've been eager for any sort of upgrade to this for years. The DVD was pan&scan 4:3, cropped I think.

I still can't believe they got people to drive trucks out on those rope bridges during the flooded river scenes.

Are you sure it's pan and scan and not full-frame open matte? Will a widescreen release actually crop the top and bottom from the DVD version? I have the DVD, and found that I didn't like the film as much as I'd remembered from when I saw it upon its release. From Wikipedia:

A VHS version of Sorcerer was released in 1990. The DVD was released in the U.S. and Canada in 1998 in a non-widescreen version, which is not its original theatrical aspect ratio: it was shown in cinemas at a ratio of 1.85:1. During the 1980s and 1990s, like Stanley Kubrick, Friedkin consistently claimed that he preferred the home video releases of his films to be presented in the fullframe format.[11] However, since widescreen televisions have become popular, Friedkin has allowed many of his other films to be released on DVD in their original widescreen formats (The French Connection, Cruising, To Live and Die in L.A.). Currently, there are no plans for a newly remastered release; however, Friedkin's controversial 1980 film Cruising was issued as a deluxe DVD in 2007, with Friedkin indicating that Sorcerer might get the same treatment at some point.

You're right in that I although I know the DVD was 4:3, I don't know whether it was cropped or open matte. I would be surprised if it were open matte, but neither do I recall the disc or theatrical version well enough to say.

They did a 2k scan of the negative and I am assuming Billy will have learned his lesson. Then again...

I'm hopeful. They intend to show this in theaters so it's doubtful they would strip it of detail.

The remastered French Connection disc looks great, and I'm assuming Friedkin won't be up to the same shenanigans after disowning the original disc.

I agree with Josh and others that he only disowned to save his own reputation. HE made those changes. HE approved them. You can see him doing it on the documentary. but foolishly, he approved these changes based upon a tiny little calibrated monitor. He was unable to see the detail had been stripped from thefilm. Had he viewed it on a large screen, it would have been obvious.

The new-new BluRay is sensational. Love it. It might even be too rich in color, as it reminds me of Kodachrome 40, but whatever. It's likely far truer to the source than what we have had over the years.

I personally don't care why he changed his mind. Just the fact that he did, or claimed to, is all that matters. And now we have a beautiful Blu-ray to show it.

About three months further down the road now since the last post. I'm really looking forward to an upgrade in SORCERER to Blu-Ray and widescreen. It's been a long wait.

According to various tweets from Friedkin himself:
  • Warner Bros. and Universal are both involved in the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release, to unknown degrees. "A lot" of extras are planned, though the only confirmed one so far is a commentary track.
  • Color timing and 5.1 audio mixing/conversion for the new master started last month. Friedkin mentioned one Ned Price (who is WB's VP of Mastering) as supervising the release along with him, which suggests that WB may be handling that side of things (yay?).
  • The new print is due to be shown at the Venice Film Festival next month (August 29).

Ok, i was at the screening of Sorcerer ( a 1977 masterpiece )at the Venice film festival last month, and it was a restored version of the film by Warner brothers and it is a 4k scanning of the film...i report my impressions about it from the Sorcerer blog

I am literally stunned by this new digital master, this is the best version they could ever made, and the best could possibly ever made in my opinion in terms of image quality and definition ( that’s very high ), definitely is one of the finest work of digital remastering for a seventy’s film i ever seen and i will ever see..the sound is like a bomb that is ready to explode into your ears everytime.. if i were in you guys i couldn’t wait until the next spring..really i couldn’t …this is far better than the print used for the ray blu disc version of the exorcist..( Sorry for my english..)

Yes , i have been really impressed by this new 4k scan technology, it gives a new birth to any film, i think 4k it's the real blu ray!! ( the actual 2k blu ray are only a taste of high definition), so now it's absolutely necessary for Warner and other film house to let us enjoy this experience for all the most know masterpiece they 've produced before smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

Who knows what extras will be included...but you can find two videos on youtube: one is a making of the car crashing sequence in the beginning of the film, the second one is a sequence on the truck which was cut away from the final cut.

Apologies, if there's already a thread on this one.

Received my copy of Billy Friedkin's Sorceror, today.

While Warner splashed out on the packaging, going the digibook route, they did not splash out on actual disc content.
Now, there are rumours about why there are no extras, but I'm not getting into that.

The feature is relegated to a BD-25, with just over 21gb of the actual disc being used.

The PQ is solid, for the most part. There is a smidge of sharpening present, but nothing ruinous.
I just happen to be susceptible to digital sharpening and all it's giveaway signs.

Grain is present and correct.

Front:

Back, with note from Friedkin:

Disc art is the standard black Warner disc, with film title.

Btw, I can't believe this was ever a PG. Scheider drops an f-bomb 20 mins in and there's plenty of blood on show.
When the MPAA lose their **** over James Bond fisticuffs in the likes of Casino Royale today, it makes you wonder what the hell happened.

The MPAA might have factored in that it was not a movie kids would want to see. Most of the audience would be old enough to handle it. Thanks for the post, will have to add this disc to the list. smile.gif
