After looking for new "reference quality" blu-rays and looking though the PQ Tier thread (http://www.avsforum.com/t/1168342/the-new-pq-tier-thread-for-blu-ray-rankings) a question came up. Hopefully someone can answer this for me. If a blu-ray is considered to be (or near) reference quality in all aspects does this only apply to that specific version? For example I notice some blu-rays get released then re-released a few years later in a "special edition" or "extended edition" and then re-released in a "bundle." Lets say one is released in 2005 then re-released in 2010 in a "collectors edition" or whatever, so is the reference quality version to buy the 2005 release or the 2010 re-release?? Or does the blu-ray disc it self remain "reference quality" no matter how many times it is released? Hope I haven't confused anyone and my question makes sense.
I try and read reviews that provide specific details on PQ, aspect ratio, and source material used for the transfer before making a buying decision.
All blurays are not created equal unfortunately.
You can read numerous accounts of poor transfer, incorrect framing, incorrect aspect ratios... Just to name a few.
There are many forum discussions on any of these topics, which add to the fun when buying a new film on bluray to add to your collection.
