Watched this one tonight.

While a very good and often quite entertaining (and occasionally shocking) movie with all the usual Tarantino touches that have now become as rote as an Eddie Van Halen widdly-widdly two-handed guitar solo, I have to say this movie after one viewing ranks near the bottom of Tarantino's films for me. The joy in watching this movie isn't really the story arc, but individual set pieces and long stretches of dialog that always seem to ratchet up tension but not always lead to explosive climaxes. I do think it is the best photographed movie Tarantino has directed so far.

Anyway..... on Blu-ray, the film looks excellent but more importantly, especially for a Tarantino flick, it sounds amazing. Full bodied surround that envelopes the viewer in both the usual oddball cult film and pop music (and a couple rap tunes!) cues and whats going on onscreen. Sound design is king on this release. The extras are pretty skimpy, just two short features on J. Michael Riva, the production designer and the stunt work involved in the film. The rest is promos for the "XX" Tarantino box set and this movie's soundtrack (big whoop).

I thought it was good, but not great. Nothing I would ever have considered a "Best Picture" nominee.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Too bad Christoph Waltz's character was killed. I would have liked to see a sequel centering on his character.

Fixed.

All 3 stores, walmart, target and best buy have an "exclusive disc". Are they all different?

Yes. Best Buy's disc has something called "Around the Globe with Django Unchained: Conversations with the Filmmakers and Cast," which I'm guessing is a bunch of interview footage culled from press junkets. Supposedly it runs around 30 minutes. Wal-Mart has a 23-minute documentary called "Re-imagining the Spaghetti Western." Target has the Comic Con panel that's already on Youtube (which sucks because I want that steelbook). Pretty sure all three bonus discs are DVDs.

Per DVD Beaver and Blu-ray.com, it doesn't look like Walmart has anything extra that isn't already on the BD:

DVD Beaver:

Extras :

Remembering J. Michael Riva: The Production Design of Django Unchained is a 13-minute piece focusing on the brilliant work of the production designer who passed away June 7th of last year. His credits include The Amazing Spider-Man, Seven Pounds and The Pursuit of Happyness and many more. Reimagining the Spaghetti Western: The Horses & Stunts of Django Unchained spends 14-minutes examining some of the details behind the stunt work in the film. As a Blu-ray exclusive we get a dozen minutes on The Costume Designs of Sharen Davis and there is a short trailer for the 20 Years In The Making: The Tarantino XX Blu-ray™ Collection and another advert for the Django Unchained Soundtrack. The package has a DVD of the feature and a Digital Copy code.

Blu-ray.com:

Django Unchained Blu-ray, Special Features and Extras

* Remembering J. Michael Riva: The Production Design of Django Unchained (1080p; 12:50) is a touching homage to Riva, the film's production designer who passed away during the shoot. Riva completed some interviews about the film before his untimely demise, parts of which are excerpted here.

* Reimagining the Spaghetti Western: The Horses and Stunts of Django Unchained (1080p; 13:46) features interviews with Tarantino and Jeff Dashnaw, the stunt coordinator on the film, both of whom go to some lengths to assure everyone that no horses were injured during the filming.

* The Costume Designs of Sharen Davis (1080p; 12:03) focuses on the film's incredibly varied costumes.

* Tarantino XX Blu-ray Collection Promo (1080p; 1:25)

* Django Unchained Soundtrack Promo (1080p; 00:22)

The Walmart spaghetti western documentary appears to be different than the spaghetti western documentary that's on the other editions. The Walmart edition has a special making of documentary, so it is unique.

Here's the scoop on the Walmart bonus from another forum:

"I have it and its 23min 19 sec and its about the actors talking about the characters in the movie and how the actors protrade them. No menu just starts playing. And it is a DVD and the blu-ray case is a 3 disc case not a 2 disc with the bonus disc in a paper sleeve."

The Best Buy exclusive content - "Around the Globe with Django Unchained" - is apparently online access, not a DVD. I got the Target Steelbook.

But Tarantino has said that after this one plays out, he'll possibly re-edit it for an extended version (it was originally long enough that Weinstein wanted a 2-parter); the additional footage would require changing the story somewhat, so it will not simply be splicing in some scenes here and there.

Is it me or is the volume low on the center channel? I have the rental from netflix playing on a ps3 using a dts core optical audio feed. The rest of the surround sound is great.

There's no commentary. Tarantino has never done a commentary for one of his own movies (i.e. a movie that he directed and didn't just write/produce/"present"). There's one for Reservoir Dogs, but that was just pieced together from preexisting interviews.
