Someone can't get LOTR extended edition blu rays to play in their blu ray player. Any likely reason other than maybe needing some sort of firmware update onn their player? I really thought it was updated, but maybe not.

Haven't any problems with mine nor heard of any. Might help to know what the specific player in question is and then look for issues with that particular player perhaps. Quick google got this http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=176189

"I realize that somebody playing free music isn't as commercial as a hamburger stand. But is it because you can eat a hamburger and hold it in your hand and you can't do that with music? Is it too free to control?" - Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) discussing commercial success in the music biz

Check your discs. The first copy I bought had discs that were messed up and scratched at the packing stage. Had to swap it out disc-by-disc with a few other sets to get a set that was playable.

I'll tell them to check it out if they haven't. As far as the player, though, although I don't know the specific one, it's a Samsung from 2010, I believe, and these discs came out in 2011, so it's definitely not a player you'd think would have issues with a soon after released set.
