It just came out a couple weeks ago, did anyone pick this up? Reviews are making claims about the PQ/AQ being on par with Lawrence of Arabia, Sound of Music, and Ben-Hur. Looks pretty darn impressive from these shots:

It's a brilliant transfer - one of the best large element transfers ever. A couple of the usual sorts are talking about "blooming" whites in the skies and of course are just nuts. No blooming anything (one really wonders what these people are watching their movies on) and gorgeous and perfect color and contrast.

I had a brief look at it and that's not an unreasonable comparison: It is absoutely stunning and simply a reference transfer. (Why oh why couldn'tCleopatraa look like this?)

And yet there are certain folks who've raved about Cleopatra. I am praying that the US release fixes the color - it really deserves to look as good as this Dolly transfer, if not better.

Ok, watched the whole film last night and have one minor quibble: The blacks are never as dark as they could be. Mind you, it's only noticeable in a couple of scenes. This, for example: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=66015&position=26

edit: By the way, what a great, great film. I saw it in 70mm four years ago and enjoyed it very much, but it was even better the second time around.

For a long time I had thought that only WALL-E and I loved Hello Dolly but it seems Steen DK is among our number, I watched the BD last night for the first time and was simply blown away. The film looked spectacular. Not surprisingly, though, its 40 plus year old sound track showed its age. No matter, I loved seeing it again, this time with its visual beauty restored The film certainly has its weaknesses but the quality of the video transfer is not among them. After all, how many movies can boast three Tony Award winners (Carol Channing, the world's tallest dancing boy, Tommy Tune, and Barbra Streisand who also won two Oscars) plus Walter Matthau, who also won an Oscar. As always, Streisand's wonderful voice and peerless musicality were thrilling. I also loved Matthau. Despite his hopelessly bad voice, he was perfect as skinflint Horace Vandergelder. Finally, the dancing was great.
