Thanks Geoff
It here's a thread on BluRay.com where Stacy Spears posts and she said you can't test for xvYCC on the disk.

Below is her response.

"xvColor is not officially part of the BD Spec, so there was no way, at the time of authoring, to signal it.

Most displays have xvColor disabled in the TVs UI if its not present. You can check and see if they enable it when you are playing a know title that claims to support it. At least my Panasonic VT20 was like that."

FYI, Stacey is a "He".

It ain't ignorance causes so much trouble; it's folks knowing so much that ain't so

I could be wrong, but I get the impression from Stacey's response that the test pattern itself is genuine but it doesn't 'signal' the display in any way to tell it that it's passing xv colour. I have to actually turn it on in my TV menu to get the xvYCC pattern to display properly.

BTW it's under Advanced Video -> Evaluation -> Clipping.

I just watched the newest "ROBOCOP" and I have to tell you that it is a step up in clarity, but is it worth the $8 to do so??? Yes, it is and it will fit perfectly with all the other copies of the same movie...the only one I don't have anymore is the LD...time ,to move on, as they say!

...finally retired and spending time in my HT!!!

My equipment consists of: Epson 9500 UB Projector(Avical ISFd); 110" 16x9 JKP Affinity Screen; Panny BD30 Player, Tosh HDA1 Player; Definitive Speakers (Center, Towers, Rear); Onkyo 608 A/V Receiver; Nevo Q50 Remote; TWC DVR-HD Cable Box; 5 Bello chairs.

Thanks so much Geoff! I'll give it a try. I'll manually set my W9 to xvColor. I have Captain Phillips to watch on my PS4 but don't know if if will output xvColor. Even if it does the difference might not be noticeable.

Edit: I ran the clipping pattern you are correct! PS4 will output x.v Color!
Unfortunately the Xbox one will not. In fact the Xbox one video output is a mess.
When RGB full is selected it clips the color range. If I'm describing it correctly.
All the boxes were solid viewing that pattern. If I set it to limited then it displays correctly.
That makes no sense to me. PS4 worked perfectly with RGB full.

The Smurfs 2 Blu-ray, mastered in 4K by Sony, is possibly the best-looking Blu-ray I've ever seen.eek.gif And trust me, I have seen too many to count. I have never seen live-action video blended so well with CGI, including Avatar. This is the definition of pure eye candy.

If Smurfs 2 had Kate Upton and Scarlett Johansson naked and making out with each other there still wouldn't be enough eye candy to make me watch the rest of it.

To draw it into an actual point though, it would easier to get excited about 4k (both true 4k and these Mi4k titles) if more of these were actual, you know, good movies. Glory, sure. Captain Phillips, Taxi Driver. Most of these others are just garbage though. This is seriously how Hollywood wants to turn people on to this new format? By using it to squeeze a few more bucks out of a bunch of CGI craptaculars and pointless remakes?

This is the same thing Sony did with SuperBit DVDs. The mentality from the studio is that the new branding is a way to move some copies of properties that have otherwise gone stale. How else could Sony make any money off Johnny Mnemonic? Nobody's going to buy that title for the movie itself, but some suckers might pay to check out the whiz-bang "SuperBit" thing.

I'd like to see Sony do a 4k version of "The Fifth Element" for BD release. The first release i heard had issues but the reissue fixed it. For the film's 20th anniversary they should add tons of extras including the marketing campaign used to advertise the film not to mention the french version of the film.

How does the French version differ from the American release?

The recent Japanese re-release might be the one to get. It uses the newer Gaumont transfer with a very healthy bit rate. No edge enhancement, but some brightness boosting... Check the Fifth Element thread for comparisons.

All the best Blu-rays have had their levels adjusted. It's standard practice.

While I agree with this, the improvements of the transfer are significant.

My players have color space choices of YCbCr4:2:2, YCbCr4:4:4, RGB 16-235, and RGB 0-255. Also, some of my players have Deep Color choices of Off, 30 Bit, and 36 Bit. What color space and color bitrate is the Mastered in 4K series recorded at?

The information about the Mi4K titles is rather sketchy but Sony claims that they only look proper when used with current Sony Blu-Ray and HDTV products as the proprietary decoding techniques are supposedly baked into the firmware of those products and activated when using the "Cinema" picture settings. Boolean logic - and some earlier blurbs about the Sony Mi4K products from last year - suggest that they work as intended with any Blu-Ray player and TV that supports "xvycc", so I guess that means you should use the "Auto" setting if you have one. If you don't have an "Auto" choice, you just play around with the settings on your TV and player, and settle on whatever looks best to you.

XVycc is Deep Color right?

The proper setting for sharpness is always0.
Also my Oppo BDP-103D is region free.
That makes me awesome.

No they're completely different things. XV colour relates to the colour gamut, Deep Colour relates to bit depth.
