I prefer the DLP showings over the Sony 4K projectors. But the DLP theater is also the 3D theater at AMC.

I gotta say, that this...

...looks pretty damn good.

My initial impressions weren't great, however. Then I compared it with the previous release and it was like a veil had been lifted. Color, clarity, resolution, all greatly improved. Any impressions out there about the new versions of GLORY or TAXI DRIVER compared to their previous releases? I'm quite happy with both these titles and am wondering how much will be gained on a 1080p system.

I wonder why the press release and marketing hype for these releases doesn't contain any comparison screenshots..... you know, so you can see just how much better the picture quality is compared to the previous bluray releases.....

raoul_duke can you take a screengrab from your old and new spiderman blurays at the same picture to illustrate what you are saying?

They're pulling out all the stops for their "4K" introduction. My tongue is hanging out for those titles, NOT.biggrin.gif And....I'm really going to start buying movies in 4K ALL OVER AGAIN....when hell freezes over. Only if they take my Blu-rays for a 75% trade-in.mad.gif

One would think they would pick movies that are visual feasts, not just whatever was closest to the mastering station...

Right, that's pretty much it!

A good transfer in AVC 1080p is good enough until the REAL next format comes out.. too many suckers out there that's why they keep pulling this move every few years.. very weak imo

Total 39,580 screens in the US (2011). Last number I heard was that roughly 14000 screens was 4K equipped, majority was Sony Cine Alta SXRD 4K projectors.

The thing is with projectors, you'll need the best picture quality. Something like the original releaseof Ghostbusters, Spiderman, Total Recall, and Karate Kid are just not good enough for projection needs so the superbit blu-rays are sorely needed.

For 65" or lower 2K display, Total Recall and Karate Kid are not needed but Spiderman and Ghostbusters are still needed.

Oh ok, thanks David, that's true for projectors, I'm not quite there, yet... So I'm always thinking HDTVs wink.gif I might pick one (4k BD) up when they come out and compare with a regular BD, I'll try and get a good one like you mentioned to make sure I can 'easily' notice the difference, if there is one to see on my 65" plasma, 9ft away cool.gif

The original Spiderman and Ghostbusters are very easily detected because not only they use higher bitrate but they actually completely remastered the encode.

Yes that was my point, thank you. "Tealized" is a colloquialism, but a sad reality.

Did the original Spider-Man from (2002?) come from a new film transfer? I havent seen the original blue release since it came out on blu, but I remember being very unimpressed with it.

The original Spidey movie comes from a new transfer. I agree, the original BD was "meh" in quality.

Anxious to get that one because I held off getting the BD. Still have the Superbit DVD which is amazing, at least for color. I use it to check flesh tones and greens. The opening chapters at the school have a wide array of colors and a film like appearance that put the modern tealized transfers to shame. Of course I'm up converting it with the best processors (ABT or Radiance).

I ordered the original Spidey, new Spidey and Taxi Driver 4K masters.

I'll take any uptick in image quality I can get when it comes to movies I enjoy.

I don't know about the rest of the reviewers but I received a non-disclosure agreement in order to get the movies early. Besides, I can't put up my review because the review samples were on BD-R instead of a finalized, pressed discs.

Is it true that Total Recall does not contain the EE, only the theatrical?
