Check out Leonard Maltin, over here.

That is the definition of name calling. No one gave Matt_Stevens or Partyslammer any guff for not liking Evil Dead, and rightfully so since they aren't required to like what you like. I felt The Conjouring was a boring, predictable, crapfest that only scared me because I haven't learned to not invest $10 in a movie based off RottenTomatoes scores. General Kenobi didn't see it that way and that's cool, but I did enjoy Evil Dead. Doesn't mean you can call me an old New Yorker.

The sheer off-kilter tone of especially the original with it's low budget stop motion effects along with Raimi's direction and Campbell's performance is what made that movie so unique. Very little of that is evident in this remake aside from some Raimi-esque direction and camera work. There's almost none of the really bizarre scenes like the original as exhibited in the various (often crudely) animated bits like the corpse dancing headless in the moonlight or monstrous creatures literally bleeding clay-like gore in the finale.

It's more or less just slasher porn. After a while, the relentless violence becomes numbing and there's no real (dark) humor to provide the kind of welcome counterpoint that the two originals had. I will say one sequence that ends with a hypodermic needle removal is pretty unsettling.

Although there are a few nods to Raimi's style in this one (the demonic POV zooming through the woods for example), the overall style had more in common with numerous interchangeable horror flicks from the past decade or so. I will mention that the post credits cameo made me wanna throw my tv into the pool.

But yeah, the A/V quality on this release is pretty impressive.

A friend of mine who saw this kind of echoed what I expected it to be. That it was a film with absolutely no character interest (from the audience), humor (even dark), or inspired camera work, and that it would just be a straight ahead gore/puke-fest.

"Do I like horror movies?" is the first question to ask before watching this one...

The more appropriate question would be "Do I like original, good horror movies?"

It's like an Adam Sandler fan asking "do you like comedies" when pulling Sandler's latest epic.

ED 2013 is really well above slasher porn. It's fine not to like it, but being different from the original doesn't make it bad in the slightest. Just different.

My only complaints were they didn't play up the recovering junkie angle as much as they could have, and the dog stuff.

I admit some outright bias. The original Evil Dead was a landmark "horror" film. Even though it was an inexpensive film, there was a ton of inspiration behind the picture. It wasn't just about gore, or "horror". That is what I was getting at in my previouspost.

This was not a copy of the original, it was not meant to be funny and if you thought from the trailer or even from the original that you were going to get some complex character study in the mix you were fooling yourself. This was simply a rebirth of grade A practical effects in horror film making with a fantastic performance by Jane Levy, an otherwise forgettable cast, and a familiar narrative with oodles of atmosphere. I enjoyed it for exactly that. I thought the trailers were pretty black and white so not sure what folks were expecting to get beyond the trailer on steroids.

Oh please, I wasn't even referring to "complex character study". Noone was. But I suppose I would like to think that with the passage of time, they could have upped the ante on virtually every element of the original, and made it a hell of a lot better. They didn't do that.

I am glad that you were able to strip away your expectations for the film, and enjoy it for what it was. I suppose to say it's often tough to approach a remake without making comparisons with the original. I still think the ideal situation with a remake is to not only impress new audiences, but to leave the original in the dust for those familar with the original.

On the contrary, I think the ideal situation is to respect the original while bringing something fresh at the same time. Which Evil Dead 2013 precisely does. To each his own.

This movie will never replace the original Evil Dead, but as a modern day horror film it was an excellent addition to the genre. This movie looked and sounded amazing, especially the Audio which IMO is Reference/Demo material

I agree that the image quality and audio was excellent, but I didn't like the movie very much.

I don't know where the respect is, but I guess I can agree that there was something "fresh" with the film, being that it was completely different in basically every way imaginable to the original.
