"On September 3, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release "The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert" on a triple DVD set, as an SD Blu-ray — with upscaled standard definition original material with uncompressed stereo and DTS-HD surround sound for the best possible quality — and digital. This release boasts newly remastered sound across both sections of the concert and represents the first time the opening acts' performances have been made available on DVD or Blu-ray."

Great news this will be coming to Blu-ray, but...... it will be an upscale from standard def! It will still likely not be the complete show, at least missing U2's "broadcast" of "Until The End Of The World" and Robert Plants notoriously awful rendition of "Innuendo" which he personally requested never be included on any home video released because he admitted his vox were lousy on the song. Up 'til now, the old 2 disc laserdisc set has been the most complete home video release of this show.

This is the actual complete tracklist of the concert which can be used to compare with whatever will eventually show up on this new release:

Thanks for posting this, the versions I've seen in the past always excluded the set by Extreme who nailed all the Queen songs they performed. Here's a link to the new releases set list. http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=11507

Hmmm this is not clear to me. Either it's an "SD Blu-ray" or it is a 1080 BD (that has upscaled-from-SD material on it).

When I first read this I thought they were simply putting the SD material onto a BD disc in order to avoid the multiple disc changes needed for DVD which makes alot of sense but upscaling the material not so much...?

In the Blu-ray.com link it says: "Eagle Rock Entertainment will release The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert as an SD Blu-ray with upscaled standard definition original material with uncompressed stereo and DTS-HD surround sound for the best possible quality"

Sounds like it will be upscaled SD to fit on a BD.

Yeah it does, but if so "what's the point" i.e. sure they can upscale the SD material, which will make it way bigger bit-wise requiring a Blu-ray disc, or they can simply put the original SD material onto BD disc and it will all fit on one. Then let our displays do the upscaling.

I'd prefer the latter myself i.e. give me the original and let me upscale it, though maybe they have a supplier that has a magic wand re: doing the upscaling with highest possible quality (though there are lots of decisions to make along the way).

Yes but they can charge more and put a "for the first time on Blu-ray" sticker on it, so there's that. wink.gif

Guess we will have to wait for September and see who's first to compare the DVD and BD versions.
