Browsing Amazon and found the collector's addition that comes out on Blu in September. Haven't seen this movie in awhile and the DVD looks pretty bad. Can't find tech specs on this title. Looks like Shout! factory was the studio.

Anyone have an idea if it was a new master or cleaned up? Oh the new cover is pretty ridiculous on this one.

Scream Factory does reversible artwork, so if you don't like the new artwork, the original artwork is on the other side. I always display the original artwork for my Scream Factory discs. The new artwork is on the slip, and the original artwork is on the cover when I pull it out. I don't think the new Prince of Darkness artwork looks all that bad (especially compared to the new artwork for From Beyond). The original artwork is by far the best though.

As for the transfer, I've heard nothing yet. I've already pre-ordered my copy. My wife and I are both huge fans of the movie. We saw it together in the theater when it came out. Of course, we weren't married then! I hope the transfer is good and we don't end up with something like Phantasm 2.

Thanks for the info Neveser. Good to know about reversible covers. It really doesn't bother me either way, I'm not watching the cover, but the transfer, that does matter, This movie in my opinion is one of Carpenter's best. I might even put it behind The Thing, and Halloween. Yeah it's got some cheesy dialogue, but there are scenes that did really creeped me out. I think probably the one thing that scared me the most in this movie was A.J. Simon's mustache!wink.gif

The only thing I do know for sure about the release is that there will be an interview with Alice Cooper. His part my not have been very big, but still, nice.

I know there's an HD master that is shown on TV, but it's been cropped to 1.85. Hopefully we'll get a new master with the proper aspect ratio, 2.35. We should hear more from Sceram Factory soon.

I also ordered a copy, as a film it's one of the creepier things Carpenter has done.

Thanks for the update on the extras. I still am waiting for any improvements to either video or audio. Maybe too soon for that, but crossing fingers still for some type of clean up.

Ain't no fixing a Universal master.

The proper setting for sharpness is always0.
Also my Oppo BDP-103D is region free.
That makes me awesome.

Doesn't Shout Factory usually get input from the original film makers if at all possible? It looks like they might have talked to Dean Cundey and maybe John Carpenter for Halloween and finally fixed the color timing. Why wouldn't they for the other Carpenter films like The Fog and Prince of Darkness?

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

They bow to the will of licensholders. At best you'll get a typical Universal transfer with a new Cundey color timing. Like the Fog, which was a nearly decade old Studiocanal HD telecine.

Have you seen The Fog SE? If that's the case, it's just sad. I'm holding out hope, however. The cinematography and editing alone are master lessons in outstanding film technique in just under 2 hours.

Yeah, I watched the Fog on blu ray. It's an ancient HD master with recent color correction.

Crap! Though, I guess outside of a new UHD transfer and restoration from original camera negatives this is the best these films will look on home video for some time.

Big sigh...

Not sure about the original negatives, but I did put an email into Shout Factory about the actual transfer of this new release. Nothing yet, and really don't expect anything back. From all I read, and there isn't much yet, I think it will be the same used for the past DVD. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I keep looking on their Facebook site for any updates.

The people over at Shout are not videophiles and it is apparent they will release any transfer they can get their hands on for Blu-ray. One of the reasons why so many of the studios licensed these horror movies out to them was the lack of available quality masters.

Found what I think might be the first review, unfortunately doesn't really knock out detailed review like good ol' Ralph, but it will do for now.

Oh that's being nice, it was beyond lame, lame being zero on a scale that progresses backwards.

The "The all burn victim remake of Cliffhanger was fantastic" screen cap is better than all the technical details you'll find at Blu-ray.com.

The images on the blu-ray site has lots of artifacts in it, not surprising it's a Universal title. The caps are rather mixed, some nice others poor but the film grain has a coarse look to it in all of them, again a Universal signature.

Scream! is quite possible the most in your face, unfair, company which I've ever seen in my life. So I will repost this information here...

Take a look at this screenshot comparison: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/41582

Obviously the problem does not lie with Universal. Scream!'s release is riddled with compression artifacts, the film grain is blotchy and video looking, the encode is poor, the contrast is boosted, and there's quite a bit of digital sharpening.

On the other hand, Studio Canal's version is OK and quite filmlike in presentation.
The Studio Canal looks softer and color shifted. Not an improvement. The Scream looks like it had a better transfer and with low budget films when one thing is improved or problems may surface.
