Chronicling the exciting early years of the United States' race to conquer the final frontier, and the daredevil test pilots who ultimately became the first Americans in space, The Right Stuff begins as America is pondering its future and looking to the skies. And intrepid test pilot Chuck Yeager (Shepard) and the seven pioneering astronauts of the Project Mercury space program are the ones the country looks to. Kaufman scripts and directs, pushing the envelope with a filmmaking bravado that matches this soaring story of training, heroism and of sudden fame for which there is no training.

Supplements:
The Journey and the Mission: Scene-Specific Commentaries with Director/Screenwriter Philip Kaufman, Cast and Crew Members
Additional Scenes
John Glenn: American Hero (1988 PBS Documentary)

Agreed.

At least it's Warner, so there's a chance it will be good. If it were Universal, well... you already know.

Yeah really.

Not to steer the subject of discussion but does anyone else feel like catalog releases in general have slowed WAY down the past couple years? Not a trend I am happy with.

You'd think that any movie with Oscar wins or nominations would be first out the door. Or in order of net profit. Releases seem to defy all logic.

Work is being done to release many catalog titles, but it's a slow and painful process because it takes time to transfer and re-master films that haven't been touched in over a decade. DVD catalog releases were largely reliant upon VHS/laserdisc masters for years and Blu-Ray was reliant on HD masters done in the 90's if they were lucky. WB and other studios are working around the clock to get catalog titles ready for Blu and 4K, with many receiving 4K scans that will later be re-visted for 4K mastering.

I love that the film makers took a tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek approach to this subject. It plays more like a dramedy and actually works! A real classic gem.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

I seem to remember that Walter Cronkite hated the film, apparently because it took a less-than-reverent attitude towards the whole endeavor, including its portrayal of the news media in particular.

That was the point of the whole thing, and one of its triumphs, that it pulled back the layer of media gloss and mythologizing to reveal the real men and women behind the space program, which only makes what they did all the more heroic.

My sense is that catalog releases have increased dramatically in the past couple of years. It's a trend I'm delighted with.

This is great news! The Right Stuff is one my all time favorites. Bill Conti's score is fantastic and Levon Helm was the perfect choice to provide the ending narration.

I shall buy this! But only when a non-digibook release exists, which will probably take six months to a year. I can't stand digibook releases. Maybe WalMart will have a non-digibook exclusive.

It's not going to touch a modern digital soundtrack for bass content... unless they remixed the original soundtrack, that is.

One of my favorite movies. I had the P&S then WS LDs, the fipper DVD (one of my first purchases) I didn't bother with the DE DVD so I'm really looking forward to the Blu-ray. Being Warner it should be worth the wait.
FWIW, Trevor.

Dolby TrueHD, eh? Looks like they've been sitting on this disc master for a while. Hopefully, the DVD Beaver shots are accurate... that site is not known for the best screen caps.

FWIW, the DVDbeaver review isn't ecstatic about the AV quality of this release.

What's up with WB's menus these days anyway? Compared to the other studios they seem pretty dull.

It's Dolby TrueHD with Dolby's new 96k upsampling process (which DTS doesn't offer). This is the first Hollywood feature film to get this treatment.

At least in terms of audio, it's a new master.

They made the point it probably looks as good as the original material would allow, compared to a modern film. From what I can tell of the screen caps, it has a softness that was inherent to the photography. I'm happy they didn't try and sharpen it or do any other digital tomfoolery to 'improve' the image.

Hmmm.... why not just take the original analog masters and re-master the dang thing in 24 bit/96 kHz PCM and then encode it on the disc as either 24/96 Dolby TrueHD or 24/96 DTS Master Audio? It's in the Blu-ray specs at up to 8 channels and up to 6 in 24/192. The 96 kHz upsampling from 48 kHz really isn't going to do a blessed thing and even if it did help a little bit you need a new processor that handles TrueHD upsampling.
