Star Trek: Into Darkness

We start off with one of the most anticipated movies of 2013. This film rocked the theaters, and some moviegoers may have been lucky enough to see it in a Dolby Atmos presentation. Star Trek: Into Darkness is set to be released on Blu-ray September 10, 2013 in a combo Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy and 3D. The audio sound track will be 7.1 Dolby TrueHD. The movie and score were originally mixed in Dolby Atmos, but unfortunately for home viewers, we will only hear the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mix. I can almost guarantee this Blu-ray as demo-worthy material. If you didn't get a chance to see it in theaters, you won't want to miss this Blu-ray release.

Peter Gabriel: Live in Athens

You might have seen this one being released on DVD last year, and it is now coming to Blu-ray. Director Michael Chapman and executive producer Martin Scorsese bring us this wonderful concert pieced together from over 150 reels of original 35mm negatives and remixed in 5.1. This fantastic package will also include for the first time Youssou N’Dour’s opening set. Don't miss out on this concert film of Peter Gabriel and the band in their mid-'80s pomp.

The Exorcist – 40th Anniversary Special

This classic horror flick is already on Blu-ray, but on October 8, 2013, Warner Bros will release its 40th Anniversary special Blu-ray of The Exorcist. Being a huge fan of horror movies, this film is one of my all-time top picks. What made this movie so eerie and scary for its time was the score. The music can either make or break a film, and director William Friedkin really hit the nail on the head here. The 3-disc special edition will also include two newly prepared featurettes, “Beyond Comprehension: William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist” and “Talk of the Devil,” plus such vintage goodies as the 1998 BBC documentary, “The Fear of God: 25 Years of the Exorcist,” interviews, radio spots, storyboards and three featurettes.

Tell us which one you will most likely buy.

Star Trek will be a definite buy for me. I really enjoyed it.

The Exorcist would be a good buy as well but I already have it on DVD and my wife refuses to watch it again.

Trying to enjoy the simple things in life.

I haven't watched it yet with her. She knows I have it, will have to sneak in the new edition. I like the extended version on the DVD.

Peter Gabriel for sure. They had an excerpt of it on Youtube and it was actually pretty impressive. Looking forward to it.

EDIT:

Actually, B&W had a featurette on it... use this to find it on youtube...

The "So" boxset released not long ago gave you a code so you could download a few HD videos from the B&W site. Could be from the same concert given that "So" was released in 1986.

OK show of hands who isn't pre-ordering Star Trek, it's unanimous no one raised their hands! Everybody's getting it. biggrin.gif I pre-ordered it right after seeing it in the theater.

I'll probably buy it (2D) for under $15, but it wasn't a great movie, IMO. Other than the technical aspects of the movie (visual/aural effects, ship designs, costumes, sets), I can't really say that I liked it all that much. It was a bit too dumb for a Trek adventure, a bit too action-ey, and a bit too "Hulk rage, Hulk smash!". I'd like to see the Sci- turned up and the -Fi and action turned down for the next one. Stop playing it safe and give us a new adventure! Stop rehashing old stories! It's frustrating to see so much wasted potential. /rant

I believe you're correct.

It's the same concert that was previously unavailable unless you bought the SO 25th anniversary boxset. Even then, that box set only came with a DVD, plus what you're talking about. Now they're making it separately available from the boxset and on Blu-ray for the first time. To be honest, that's what they probably should've done in the first place. ^_^;

Regardless, it looks pretty amazing. Just as good as a well preserved film from the 80's, better even. (Strong colors and lights will do that I guess.)

A part of me really wants the Exorcist 40th anniversary edition but i know after showing it to my wife and the look of disgust she had on her face once was probably enough in my household unless i want to watch it alone and thats not gonna happen.

STAR TREK for sure.

adidino - I wish I understood the story with the aspect ratio. Here's the best discussion I could find on it http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=220491&page=2

There's a picture that highlites the issue of choosing the wrong version pretty well. For me in 3D it would be a tragedy if they cropped a 1.66:1 film, only to then display it with black bars on top and bottom. I don't have an issue with 2.4:1, but cropping to that spec would be a tragedy. Like I said though, I have no idea what's going on, so my preorder is cancelled and I'll wait and see.

Star Trek pre-ordered. I was fortunate enough to see in Atlantic Station in Atlanta (Dolby Atmos and 3D IMAX). Simply blown away... and that's not easy. I'm hard pressed to think of a better movie experience.

As for the Exorcist - I can't believe it's been 40 years since that movie scared the daylights out of me. Walked out of the theater half way through and was messed up for months. Slept with the lights on for over a year. It's the ONLY horror movie that I'm still horrified to watch... 40 years later. Ha. And I'm a grown man. Maybe I'll grow a pair and finish the movie.

I see now..

It looks like it may be shifting of the aspects for certain imac scenes (as they do with Dark Knight and Rises). If they make a decision to do that, there will be no away around it unless they print multiple versions (which is very unlikely). I would say just order it.

I've looked into this as you pointed it out early in the thread and that is too bad about the undecided aspect ratios. It's too bad that there are so many out there. I could understand the artistic stand point, unfortunately there's no real way to view them unless you have a Panny to switch from one to another very quickly. Even at that it is cumbersome. As far as I know, the spec so far show 2.39, so I'm guessing it will be switching between the wide screen to Imax (like Batman).

I had a similar reaction with the first Phantasm film , very unsettling it's horror, it's sci-fi, it's horror again. I saw all the sequels but there is something about the first one on a big screen in a dark room that eek.gifeek.gif As for The Exorcist, saw it on HBO once, that was enough.
