Looks like the Blu-ray will be the 88 minute version. If you're interested in more background on this film I recommend:

Was there ever a longer version released on another format?

Probably not, most accounts I've seen list the running time at 88 minutes. Even the BBFC doesn't list a 95 minute version.

All of which makes the 95 minute running time in the Saturn 3 press book look like a last minute editing job.

The missing 7 minutes as described in the article would have been nice to include in the Blu-ray's extra features (assuming there are extras).

Here's a first look:

Not bad images, plenty of detail and nice grading although I suspect a bit grain scrubbed. Sorry no nudes of Kirk....

Mine's coming from Amazon but I see BB has it on-line. Even in large cities smaller titles just aren't stocked in stores, which is why I mostly get discs through the mail. It's not like when Virgin and Tower were around, one of them would have carried this. frown.gif

Jeeze. The idea that anyone would be clamoring for this film in 2013. The mind reels at the unpredictable whimsy of humanity.

Still a lot better then current films, instead of sucking just in the last half they suck in both halves. At least S3 was trying to be something more then a mindless super action flick.

Good lord that is a pessimistic viewpoint.

Every decade it's the same: there are good films and bad films. The 80's were no different. There's plenty of good films if you search them out. Unless you have very restricted tastes.

But if Saturn 3 meets your criteria for being better than films today, you've already set the bar crazy low so I can't see how you can complain, really.

BTW...I kid about Saturn 3. There's no accounting for taste and we all have our guilty pleasures. I recently sought out It's Alive and enjoyed it enough to want to see It's Alive 2 for old times sake.

I'm predicting thousands of BDs will get paused at a certain point in the film. More than once.

I miss Tower Records/Video. =(

Not cheap, but they had it!

I remember impulse buying stuff there and drooling over the STAR WARS DEFINITIVE COLLECTION back in the day.

I have to agree, I'd never seen this film. I watched it on Friday evening and I just said out loud that this was just crap. I like stuff that you couldn't pay most people to sit through . I mean, I watched Project Stardust three times.

I saw it in the theater when it was new. While I would never clamor for its release, and am unlikely to even ever watch it again, I do recall the era back then when sci fi films of any caliber were somewhat rare and always rather anticipated and heavily discussed in fan publications, and this one was no exception. Art, I think you are a couple years older than me, and even the difference between being a teenager and being in your 20s can have a significant effect on the level of nostalgia you feel for something later. I think if you look at it in that context, there are going to be some people for whom this movie hit at impressionable point in their film viewing history.

Plus, early Harvey Keitel.

Just finished watching it.

Transfer was very good, looked great on my 181"

It's no Oscar winner, but it was enjoyable and I'll watch it again.

Some parts were much sharper than others, but overall great for a 33 year old film.

Good bonus features as well.

I also saw it in the theatre, and my thoughts match yours. This is before all the CGI that is available now, and what could be done effects wise was still limited. I remember thinking how great "the Black Hole" was, and bought it on DVD when it came out for my daughter to see. In viewing it again, I couldn't believe how poorly it stood up to my memories. frown.gif

I'd like to revisit S3, but am worried the same will happen with it. In saying that, I'm glad I grew up before all the tech advances of today. Growing up with a 19" B/W TV, it makes me appreciate having a 3d projection system in a dedicated room.

Well, a few years ago I got rid of most of my non-anamorphic DVDs. They are coming back slowly as BDs and this is one I really want, I can't wait.

...finally retired and spending time in my HT!!!

My equipment consists of:

Epson 9500 UB Projector; 110" JKP Affinity Screen; Panasonic BD30 Player, Toshiba HDA1 Player; Definitive Speakers (Center, Towers, Rear); Onkyo 608 A/V Receiver; Nevo Q50 Remote; TW HD Cable Box.

Watch anew. What some people don't get is the heart of Saturn 3 is dark sci-fi. Watch after Event Horizon, Alien, Pandorum. and Saturn 3 fits right in. The man robot story isn't that far from would Clive Barker would do with a robot story. This a future world where you wouldn't want to live there. Technical aspects of the film don't age well as they could but it was made in 1980 and even something like Star Wars IV has it's nits if we want to pick at it.
Part of the problem of Black Hole is the DVD, there may be a blu ray when the re-boot of Black Hole is released, it's on the list of things the Tron Legacy director is working on.

I watched Saturn 3 recently and really enjoyed it. I typically like sci-fi films about dystopian societies though. And, just in case you're wondering, I apparently still have some ability to discern, as I inadvertently re-verified by watching the horrific Starcrash last night and wanting to kill myself whilst doing so. eek.gif

I wouldn't advise it! Hasselhoff swinging lightsabers at stop motion alien bug men, just goes better with rum.
