I had pretty much given up. I never thought that Thief would ever see the light of day on blu-ray. I'm jazzed! And then, BAM:

Knowing Mann's history, expect the film to be tinkered with, even beyond changes made for the last Director's Cut. He's one of those directors who doesn't know when to let go.

Whatever other changes he may have done, I sure hope the slow-motion shots at the climax are not the sped-up versions he did on the first "Director's Cut". Netflix had a streaming version last year that finally had those sequences correctly slo-mo again but also had the extra Willie Nelson scene, so perhaps that's what we're getting this time.

Well it could be worse. He could be Steven Spielberg and when James Caan goes to see Attaglia at the platting company and he opens the secret panel in the car door, instead of pulling out a Browning it would be a Milky Way bar. tongue.gif

The Caan/Mann audio commentary comes from the tinkered-with US DVD, so I assume that's the cut we're getting on blu-ray unless they're willing to edit the commentary??

I have always wanted to see this movie but never have before (!) and seeing recently Miami Vice makes me want to line-up for this one.

I didn't like Collateral much, and liked Heat but thought it was overlong, and am just a huge fan of Manhunter. I rate his best work as "spellbinding".

it's like heat is a derivative of thief.

heat is more complex, modern and flushed out, but thief is superb... specially the welding/break in scene.

It's fun to joke about it, but, unlike certain other directors:

A) Spielberg gave us both the original and altered versions so we could choose.

B) He admitted it was a mistake to tinker and opted to not re-release the altered version.

His buddy George could learn from that.

I saw it at my parents house back in the mid 80's. They had the Z Channel. When video tape came out I got it on VHS. Later laser disc. Then DVD. Now finally blu-ray. This will be the last time. Of course, I say that now. When 4k hardware is common place it'll come out in that format and I'll have to have it. tongue.gif

It was scanned and restored in 4k. Then it's down converted to 1080p for blu-ray (≈2k).

Received my Thief Blu-Ray and sampled it last night.

Good lord this looks fantastic! Beautiful black levels, detail, color, contrast, you name it. And terrific score and sound. I've only viewed part of it and it's already among my favorite blu-rays I own.

Just saw this last and man is it nice. Been waiting for a long, long time to replace the crappy non-anamorphic DVD and this disc is nirvana. Got the same tingles last night I got when I saw it in the theaters. That opening scene is truly amazing looking. Next up, Fearless blu-ray, another great film that I only have the laser disc of.
