As indicated some months back (when Universal released their bare-bones edition of THE SHADOW), it was also revealed that the inimitable Shout Factory would also be releasing a special edition. It will be released on 2/25/14.

It includes:

A new HD transfer
Interviews with director Russell Mulcahy, Alec Baldwin and Penelope Ann Miller, production designer Joseph Nemec III, director of photography Stephen H. Burum and writer David Koepp,
The trailer.

Have we confirmed that this is using a new HD transfer? If it is...I'm buying it. Heck, I'll buy five copies just to show my love for Shout.

Definitely interested in this one if it has a better/improved transfer over the one we got from Universal.

The announcement did say "New HD transfer" but that's all. But going by the Shout track record, this will probably be the best transfer we're going to get for this movie.

Hmmm, the first release of The Shadow was in June....
And now a "new and improved" BD is announced for February.

Guys, don't reward this kind of double-dipping, double-dealing horsesh!t by the studios.mad.gif
The only way to stop this crap is to NOT buy.

Well, I really want to know WHAT it is. I guess I'll just have to wait until it's out but I definitely want this film on Blu-Ray and I want it in good quality.

To be fair, someone at Shout did post (possibly on AVS) that they were planning their own Special Edition release. That's the main reason I held off on purchasing the Universal disc. And just about every title released by Shout has been a marked improvement over previous releases. (Even their cover art is usually terrific.) Lately, I've considered Shout to be the Criterion of genre movies, so I'm optimistic..

I recently watched the Universal BD and thought it was fine.
Nothing spectacular, but good enough.

The UBD used an ancient HD master, probably from the pre-HD-DVD days when Universal was re-mastering many of it's films for DVD releases and HD broadcasting. If Shout did a new transfer and re-master, then their product is definitely the one I will buy!

Just checked their website and the Shout pre-order price is $21.95 (Amazon's is $26.94)

Just ordered the last BD version. This is just one of those BDs that doesn't quite require a double dip!

If there's any reason to boycott this release, it's because the disc contains The Shadow on it. smile.gif

And the first release wasn't that bad, the disc is true to how the movie looked in the theater. I don't think there is that much detail hiding that a new transfer will reveal. I also believe Shout is not getting a new transfer, it's just not cost efficient.

One thing I do know, the previously-rel;eased disc's audio couldn't even match the DTS laserdisc. We'll see how the Shout disc compares.

Like most DTS mixes, just turn up your subwoofer gain and you won't even notice. wink.gif

From what I read ages ago, most DTS laserdiscs as well as the limited run of DTS DVDs back in the mid 90's - including The Shadow - were initially created using the overly powerful theatrical mixes and were done by DTS themselves on behalf of Universal and a few others whereas the DVD industry moved to Dolby/DTS combo discs towards the end of the 90's with third-party remixes that were "optimized" for home theatre systems with lesser power than professional-grade cinema systems (or remixes that were tweaked 5.1 versions of 2/4-channel mixes) and that carried over to Blu-Ray, despite the insistence that the high quality audio was always a direct copy of the film's master tracks.

Yes. This is true. This changed forever when studios were able to install a DTS encoder and then encode their own mix. I think this was about the time Saving Private Ryan hit dvd as it was the first with half bitrate version of DTS.

HD Digest gave The Shadow CE a good review here...

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/10440/shadow_ce.html

I will definitely buy it though I really hope Universal will give the film a proper clean-up and restoration in the future for a 4K release.

I love this line from the review:
"Overall, though – and again, without having actually seen the Universal release – this seems to be a big improvement over the last HD release of the movie."rolleyes.gif

He has probably seen the HD Cable Tv version. If you don't care about the supplements, the standard Universal issue disc is around 13 dollars. It looks way better then it does on cable TV, perfect?...no as are most Blu-rays. I own a copy of the standard Blu ray.
Maybe we can get Ralph from AVS to review the collectors edition of The Shadow, he is a reviewer we can trust.

I do too.
The AV is OK, but I was hoping for an upgrade.

Not interested in Extras anymore, only the movie itself.

Yes, I can read. You'll notice that in the English language, 'OK' can be interpreted as a positive. wink.gif
