Had Disney's Frozen 3D Blu-ray pre-ordered from Amazon. Just received notice it has been cancelled. The link for the replacement is 2D only. Maybe no 3D will be released or they are going to pull that separate 2D/3D versions like they did with OZ.

Yep, I got the same email from Amazon....I wouldn't put it past Disney to do that again!

That link doesn't work. I won't by this if they don't offer a 3D option. I was also hoping to get the 3D short that played before the movie in theaters. This is really disappointing.

If Disney is attempting to pull the same thing they did with Oz by releasing separate full priced 2D and 3D Blu-rays, this movie will be a no-buy for me on any format on general principles. The Oz debacle was about the greediest, most misguided marketing idea I've seen a studio pull for any Blu-ray release.

From Bill Hunt at TheDigitalBits...

"In addition, it appears that the street date for Disney’s Frozen is going to be 3/18 as well. And as expected, it appears that the Blu-ray 3D version will be exclusive to Walmart for a limited time."

Walmart cancelled their pre-orders...

Except for the millions of consumers that shop at Walmart... Last I checked, pirates don't pay for cargo - they steal it. biggrin.gif

Strange. Over at blu-ray.com, they're reporting no 3d edition release anywhere. Quite abuzz. Any other sites confirm this?

Let me rephrase that: No pre-release orders for a 3d edition of "FROZEN" are up.

Someone at Blu-ray.com come said they got a response from a Disney representative saying that there is no 3D BD planned for the US at this time. I've also read that Disney is going to have a Digital 3D version that will be part of there new digital service launching next month. Wouldn't surprise me if Disney makes the Digital 3D version exclusive to there service as a way to push people to try it.

I would like to address what I feel is the underlying reason for this 3D fiasco. Disney and others Studios would like nothing more than to force everyone to go to digital download/streaming , etc. This way they have complete control and can charge what they want and even pull the title completely whenever they want. With physical disc they can't really accomplish this. This isn't even addressing the inferior picture quality issues, etc. If people think this method of delivery is cheaper and faster, your in for a big surprise as the prices will skyrocket and you will pay more than you ever did for physical media.

The only way to fight this is to ignore any form of digital downloading/streaming and their revenue stream is curtailed. It can be done but people have to wake up as the grass is certainly not greener in this situation.

This the most ridiculous, whining thread on AVS. Last I checked, Disney can do whatever they want with their property...

Could not have said it better. I cringe when people like Leo Laporte say on his radio show physical media is dead. The guy has a $9000 OLED TV that looks amazing and he streams netflix to it. Should be a crime.
It's up to us enthusiasts to educate people on the horror called streaming.

thebland,

Without getting into a tit for tat, I was not whining, nor do I feel others were either. If you have nothing to offer constructive wise, please refrain from commenting or mabe it would be better if you could actually just ignore this discussion. I was merely pointing out what the possible future will hold for avid videophiles, and movie collectors in particular, if studios get their way and can control everything. I for one enjoy collecting and owning movies to afford me the opportunity to watch what I want, when I want and in the best video/audio presentation. (physical media - Blu-ray)

Your correct in that Disney and other studios can do what they want with their movies. But once they put a title out there for purchase, they give up that control. They want it back and they know the way to possibly do it and make gobs of money is to force streaming/downloading and eventually eliminate physical media. In other words: Total Control!

This will happen if people don't get wise. That's all I or anyone else concerned with Disney's behavior will attest.

There are active threads on this on hometheaterforum and blu-ray.com in both the American and International forums. Blu-ray fans aren't happy about this, and Disney will hear about it one way or another. I'm not as fanatical about 3D as some people, but withholding the 3D version, either to try and promote proprietary streaming, or just to take a great big double dip, is a pretty crass move on Disney's part. I hope the UK version is 3D, I'll have no problems importing.

It has reported now that Disney will not release the 3D version in the US for some reason. Glad that the UK 3D version will be region free. I wonder if Disney wants to kill DVD 3D.

3D for the home was not a success. For one thing, they priced the 3D Blu-ray versions right out of the market because the studios were greedy. It probably doesn't cost any more to encode in 3D than 2D. 3D has also always been a fad that pops up from time to time and then quickly dies away.

Even some TV manufacturers are dropping 3D as a feature on their 2014 models.

Say goodbye to 3D and hello to 4k. It's the new "thing" that the industry is hoping will take off.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

Nice try. But It's been reported elsewhere on this site that a 3D FROZEN disc was pulled because the film is still playing theatrically around the word. It just opened in China. Since discs are easy to hack/copy, they are afraid that a bunch of 3D discs flooding the market in those countries would lessen the theatrical 3D box-office. But...streaming services like VUDUand OnDemand can't be pirated like discs can. So FROZEN will be appearing in 3D on such services. A 3D disc will come at a later date.

Even some TV manufacturers are dropping 3D as a feature on their 2014 models.

Only one--Vizio. LG had been providing their panels but they will be using a different manufacturer that doesn't make 3D screens.

Say goodbye to 3D and hello to 4k. It's the new "thing" that the industry is hoping will take off

And those sets also include 3Dbiggrin.gif

Yes, they'll probably have a passive 3D mode, but sales stats don't bode well for 3D as a strong selling point as was made abundantly clear at CES. They're hoping 4k, with its other advantages over the old 8 bit system, will have some traction. Besides, until a viable glasses free 3D system becomes a reality, you still have to wear glasses and that's a sticking point (plus the fact some people get eye strain and headaches from the fake 3D effect).

It didn't stop the Mouse from releasing 3D discs previously. Did their lawyers have a change of heart?

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!
