I already saw it twice in theaters and will buy the blu-ray on day one. Plenty of replay value imo, it's a great, great film.

Haven't seen it yet and I'm very interested in acquiring the 3D version, but the price will have to drop drastically before that can happen. smile.gif

I hope it's more aggressive 3d than Avatar. I personally feel Avatar is the most overrated blu ray for pure 3d. Depth is conservative overall and almost no pop out. I certainly don't need pop if depth is nice and strong, but Avatar had neither IMO.

Oink/Morpheo, thanks! I am most likely going for the blind buy. cool.gif

I will definitely check out the 3D version - I really wanted to see this in theater, but never got a chance to go.

You may get another chance. It is being re-released Jan. 17th for an Oscar push.

No. Like most films, it was created at 2k.

I thought many of the modern films are authored in at least 4k, if not 8k, and shot at 100 fps??

Gravity was shot with the Arri Alexa, which is a 2k camera and is very popular with cinematographers.

I didn't really take to this movie as it seemed too unbelievable how everything turned out. Also I didn't buy Sandra Bullock as a brilliant medical engineer.

It probably looks spectacular in 3D though.

These are sceenshots from the 2D Blu-ray Source, the 3D Blu-ray Source and the 2k trailer.

The 2K trailer is obviously the best, which is quite pathetic. It's less washed out and shows more details especially in the star fields. Bitrate is a hugely disappointing 21816 for the video.

This first section is 2D vs 3D. Both are around the same bitrate. 3D is slightly less at 21731, Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
This section is 2D source vs the 2K Trailer. Note the difference in star fields in the first set. The poster had to do some resizing to get these synced to the same size (slicing off some pixels), but he says no quality was lost and no compression was done. In the 2nd set, there's a lot of detail lost because of the light bloom on the Blu-ray. The color just seems off in the fire picture. Too green. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

^WTF! eek.gif

Somebody forgot to tell Warner Bros that this films visual effects and cinematography played a huge role in its success. Putting forth this kind of effort in the transfer of a film like this, that's supposed to be a visual treat, is hugely disappointing... and so inexcusable that i hope people refuse to buy it. That's the only way they'll stop releasing crap like this.mad.gif

This BD definitely falls in the rental category... far from a keeper!

Coming from someone who hasn't seen it yet, that's very disappointing WB. mad.gif

I'll definitely be renting rather than buying and will hope for a better version.

Dang. Not cool Warner Bros. Thanks for sharing and linking, as having this information pre-release will (hopefully) discourage many from wasting money on a sub-par transfer. While piracy is not condoned here, I do appreciate that I can now make an intelligent decision NOT to purchase this sub-par release and hold out for a better potential transfer.

Shame on you Warner Bros.!

Thanks again for the links corpgator.

Was this from a rental copy, a final release, are we 100% sure there was no quality loss at some point? They sure look disappointing, but dare I say, some look suspicious too.

Also, is that the 2D or 3D encode? Definitely seems a little low to me.

Warner low-balled the bitrate? Inconceivable!

That is effectively their MO for nearly every title they release. It is ironic that they do not maximize the quality of the presentation on BR considering they often do extensive restoration and archiving of their catalog.

Shame really on the video front and the audio is not the 7.1 mix either, I was looking forward to watching on my system. Perhaps a candidate for a double dip of a special edition.

Best Regards
KvE

Will Warner release a 3D imax edition of Gravity?

because as i understand it the 3D release that we can buy is a release with 2:35 aspect ratio.

and on the benq W1070 i will get black borders at top and bottom when watching 3D. and this movie just screams to be watched at full screen, just like i watched it at Imax cinema.
