I've read a few different discussions (on other forums) about this topic but I haven't found any on AVS so here we go...

With the domestic USA release of Thor: The Dark World on Blu-ray it seems that Disney has decided to discontinue the inclusion of a DVD copy with their Blu-ray combo packages.

The listings from Amazon.com include:
3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + Digital Copy (download) on (2 discs)
Blu-ray + Digital Copy (download) on (1 disc)
DVD

However, it appears that Amazon.ca has a listing for a 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy version:
Thor: The Dark World 3-disc combo package

Now I know it might seem a bit anachronistic but I actually like having a convenient DVD copy included with my Blu-ray combo packs and I actually appreciated it when the studios started making it more commonplace. I use the DVD copy as a "travel version" or as a handy back-up if I am taking movies over to a friends house and for some reason their Blu-ray player balks at playback (you know, that pesky firmware / AACS key update thing).

For those that would argue that including it is forcing consumers to "pay for something they won't use" I'd counter with the fact that the 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray combo pack is coming in at relatively the same price points as prior and other current 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + DVD combo packs. Either the surcharge for DVD is minimal (likely) or they just decided not to pass along the savings to the consumer when they sold less for the same price (also likely).

The question is, can anyone confirm or dispel whether the Canadian release will include the DVD copy or is that just a misprint on their part?

I've been looking into this recently, as well, trying to make heads or tales of it all. I'm not sure about the Canadian release, but according to the Amazon listings, the U.S. releases are as follows:

Thor: The Dark World (2-Disc 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + Digital HD)

http://www.amazon.com/Thor-World-2-Disc-Blu-ray-Digital/dp/B00HERGM86/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1391040111&sr=1-1&keywords=thor+the+dark+world

This set contains the 3D Blu-ray, regular Blu-ray and a Digital Copy code. No DVD.

Thor: The Dark World (1-Disc Blu-ray)

http://www.amazon.com/Thor-Dark-World-1-Disc-Blu-ray/dp/B00HERGNR6/ref=sr_1_3?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1391040290&sr=1-3&keywords=thor+the+dark+world

This one contains only the regular Blu-ray. No DVD. No Digital Copy.

They definitely are changing how they offer these movies on disc. Personally, I prefer the set that has Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy. This allows us to watch the movie at home (BD), in our Odyssey (DVD) and while traveling on our iPads (DC). I have no interest in 3D so I am generally not willing to pay extra for it. With Thor: TDW, the option that I like is no longer available. I suppose I'll go for the 3D set just to get the Digital Copy. I won't be buying a separate DVD, however.

For Iron Man 3 they did a full gamut of packaging options:
  • Blu-ray + DVD
  • Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy
  • 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + "Music"
  • DVD + Digital Copy

With the one consistency being the DVD inclusion in every package.

Having a DVD copy included in a Blu-ray combo is worth about $2-$4 surcharge for me; and I happily pay for it when it is given as an option. But I'm not going to lay out for the full individual DVD package at the standalone cost.

I think it's an error. Even the canadian cover art doesn't mention the dvd.

Anyone having problems with their Amazon order for Thor: The Dark World 3D order? I ordered mine yesterday and got a confirmation message that it will not be in stock until Thursday, Feb. 27 and I'll receive it on March 3.

I'm assuming my late pre-order put me at the back of the line for the 3D version.

I'm trying to decide if I should cancel it and buy locally.

I ordered mine yesterday (along with Gravity) and it is scheduled to arrive Thurs., which would make it a day late (I have Prime).
Sounds like BD sales are pretty brisk right now....

I am guessing this will be another blu ray rental sin the 7.1 track. Even reviewers are getting just the disc, no packaging.

I have decided to hold off on buying this due to the lack of DVD combo pack. Maybe Disney will reconsider and do a combo release at a later date. If nothing else the price will drop from day-one pricing.

Thanks Oink. There must be a problem with the ordering system at Amazon (I have Prime too). I was notified in the afternoon that they are both shipping.

My Thor is arriving today, if Amazon is to be believed... we'll see.

Amazon has been having shipping issues to my location for a few months. I've had to call/email and complain several times now. 2 day Prime shipping has been becoming 3-5 day shipping since November, some things are taking a week or longer to ship, even when marked as "Prime". Their partners are even worse. I ordered some shoes last week (Prime eligible) and the order itself took 4 days to process, then another 4 days to ship. I'm not sure what they modified in their process, but it's not working out like it used to. I've actually been keeping track and AP shipping has failed to deliver (pun intended) ~70% of the time since November.

My Prime shipping setup has worked very well.
It's rare it doesn't get here in 2 days (I'm in Oregon).

That was my experience from 2008 until last November. Can't explain it.

Maybe you should threaten them with dropping Prime?
Sounds like regular shipping times to me.

BTW, my Thor/Gravity package got here today....a day early and on time after all.

I upgraded to Amazon FTL, which provides virtually instantaneous delivery via Alcubierre propulsion. The front yard is taking a pounding though.

Disney really cheaped out on this release. No slip cover on the Bluray release.

I have all the Marvel movies in this series with slip covers and then one without? It just looks wrong!

Guess I'll have to buy the 3D version. mad.gif

Time to hit eBay and track down Steelbook copies of the rest of the Marvel movies. They've all had them.

At the present time the difference in price between the 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + Digital Copy edition and the Blu-ray only edition is exactly $3

To me, this means that Disney has established a premium value of $3 for 3D and the Digital Copy version.

I would have HAPPILY paid a $3 premium for a Blu-ray + DVD combo pack, or even... a $6 addition for 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + DVD if they had chosen to offer it (even though I'll never watch the 3D version).

Instead, I'm buying nothing and waiting on the pre-owned market or an Amazon sale, which ultimately Disney is losing out on those critical release-week dollars. C'mon marketing & sales, give the customers what they WANT, not what you think we need.

watched the 3d disc last night. it's really a subpar conversion, nowhere near the Avengers conversion or even earlier ones like Captain America. And it's much darker than it should be, more black crush than i've ever seen in a 3d title.
