That and Starship Troopers, yes please.

I was just poking fun - I completely agree with that last statement. The Gaumont release pulled back a bit on the boosting would be perfect.

I was actually assuming that the Gaumont release was eventually going to be recycled in America as a Mi4K release, but the Mi4K series seems to have all but died out.

I believe Sony is still authoring recent discs from 4k scans with the Mi4k metadata, but has discontinued the "Mastered in 4k" branding, which went over like a lead balloon.

That makes more sense. Instead of contributing to the 4K hype machine, it only served to confuse regular customers - and enthusiasts - as to what the metadata actually does. The timing of it all also seems to be tied to BDA's announcement of an official upcoming 4K Blu-ray spec. Get the Mi4K discs out of the retail channels before actual 4K Blu-ray discs come to market? Guess we'll find out next year...

Yeah, I cannot tell you how many countless posts by people on the forums regarding those Sony Mi4K branded titles.

"Can I play these on my Blu-ray player with my 1080p display, or do I need a 4K one?" eek.gif

It's still rolling on new releases and they just re-released the original run of Mi4K titles under new SKUs from what I saw recently. No word on any more additions to the Mi4K re-releases though.

I ordered the UK disc, it looks more natural.

The proper setting for sharpness is always0.
Also my Oppo BDP-103D is region free.
That makes me awesome.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why so many people like this movie and why so many refer to it when trying to showcase their HT.

It sucks!

Yeah, the beginning is kinda cool and the part where the girl is "re-constructed" using the machine is nice, but as a movie it's quite terrible. And don't even get me started on why in the world Chris Tucker's character made an appearance!

I just don't get it...

I dream of a better tomorrow... where chickens can cross roads and not have their motives questioned.

It's more fun than great, Luc Besson films can be like that. There is one good sequence for showing off the HT, the one where the Blue Diva sings, that used to be a big demonstration thing when audio shows starting having video.
As to Chris Tuckers character

"Bring out yer dead!".."Wait I'm not dead yet!"..(Sound Austrian here) "WRONG !!" (You know what happens next..)

Disregarding tastes, even though I would guess you are in the minority, the DVD came out in 1997. With the vivid colors and decent encoding for the time the DVD was often used to show off the PQ of a person's display. People may still use it because it's a common reference for the last 17 years. (Even though it's debatable how well one really remembers what they saw a few hours ago vs years ago). The biggest reason is probably the vivid colors and it's a fun movie to watch. Maybe to some it's even sort of a tradition.

I would add that it has Bruce Willis. My wife likes Bruce Willis, so I never have any trouble getting her to watch something with him in it (and she otherwise doesn't like actioners much). I'll add Tom Cruise and Ahnold to the list of men whose movies she will watch w/o any convincing.

It's a good thing!

I love this movie because:

- schlocky
- basic good vs evil tale
- unique aliens
- crazy Eric Serra music
- fantastic colors
- bizarre characters
- nekkid Milla
- good sci-fi
- well-fleshed out universe
- unique take on the dystopian future
- Bruce yelling "arrrrgh"
- Gary F****** Oldman
- Tucker at his best... whatever that is
- Wile E. Coyote antics
- 'Splosions
- nekkid Milla a second time
- action, action, ACTION!
- no shaky-cam or snap-zooms during dialog or action scenes
- innuendo galore

No disrespect to anyone else's opinion, but I really dislike the opera scene - specifically only the Diva's terrible auto-tune. That's one thing I wish is that Luc would go Lucas on that scene and redo it with modern auto-tune technology.
Scott Simonian and Will2007 like this.

Well, the character is an alien. Maybe that's just what they sound like.

Also, in the future, crappy auto-tune will be so pervasive in all music that most people will believe that it sounds good, because they don't know anything else... Oh, wait a minute, that's already TODAY!

I don't even think it was autotune, it sounds like they sampled the voice and Eric Serra played it on his keyboard along with his terrible arrangement. A shame really because Donizetti's music is so beautiful...
