Hi!

I manage to get hold onto a copy of 3 Days to Kill in Blu-ray.

Upon watching the extended cut, I was horrified.

Many scenes is suffering from extremely bad compression artifacts like ringing and blocking.

Also, color banding is so bad that it is as if I was watching a badly edited video on YouTube.

Directly comparing the individual files on the disc shows that only the extended scene suffered from bad transfer.

From the video itself, it seems that extended scene was once transferred into a very low CBR I-frame-only format before finally onto Blu-ray.

The following screengrabs clearly shows the issue.

The theatrical cut is first shown, then followed by the extended cut.

I hope they would do some sort of exchange program.

I simply cannot accept such quality.

01170.m2ts - Theatrical

01168.m2ts - Extended (Banding in sky)

01170.m2ts - Theatrical

01168.m2ts - Extended (Banding on wall)

01172.m2ts - Theatrical

01157.m2ts - Extended (Blocking on floor)

Theatrical vs Extended (Blocking on floor)

01170.m2ts - Theatrical

01168.m2ts - Extended (Blocking on head and leaves)

Theatrical vs Extended (Blocking on head and leaves)

That's solid analysis comparing the same scenes. I strongly doubt they'll address your concerns in the extended cut with a reissue or fix. They likely had the finished Digital Intermediate for the theatrical cut and slapped together an inferior source for the extended cut.

Thank you for doing the comparison and analysis for us. Posts like this are why I come to the AVS forums.

My stuff is old, but it still works well. Apparently AVS finds it to old to keep in their database but I'm still happy with it.

I've wondered about that, I didn't see any mention of it when Ralph Potts did the Blu-ray review. Is there more than one version of the disc out.

"Bring out yer dead!".."Wait I'm not dead yet!"..(Sound Austrian here) "WRONG !!" (You know what happens next..)

Maybe. FWIW, I had the rental version which was free of artifacts and looked stunning on my Panasonic PDP.

3 Days To Kill looked terrific on my humble 60" Mitsubishi DLP played through my Oppo BDP-83. It also sounded great via my Onkyo TX-SR875 AVR. BTW you have the option to choose between the theatrical and the extended version.
Two rival sites agree that this title is of reference quality both video and sound. One of the critics said that the movie could had been more entertaining if Luc Besson directed it instead of McG.

Glad someone mentioned it, I was appalled at the artifacts and banding too, there is a scene where Costner is in his apartment (the one invaded by the homeless) that it looks worse than DVD, it is brief but clearly visible.
I watched it on the PJ on a 80 inch widescreen.

Are both cuts encoded separately with no branching?
