Also coming from Lionsgate on 12/26 is The Descent. The title will be available Unrated anamorphic widescreen, Unrated full frame and R-rated full frame editions (SRP $28.98 each), as well as a Blu-ray Disc edition that includes both versions of the film in 1080p widescreen (SRP $39.99). The Unrated DVDs will include audio commentary with the director and cast, a second commentary with the director and members of the production crew, The Descent: Beneath the Scenes documentary, deleted and extended scenes, outtakes, the DesENDING interview with the director, storyboards and scene comparisons, a stills gallery, and cast and crew biographies. The full frame R-rated edition will include only the audio commentary with the director and cast. The Descent Blu-ray Disc will include both versions of the film via seamless branching, 6.1 PCM uncompressed audio and Dolby Digital 5.1 EX audio, all of the Unrated DVD extras, plus an in-movie interactive experience called The Gate (that lets you view behind-the-scenes material while watching the film) and a short featurette called Caving in high-definition.

from digitalbits

I was going to get this disc even if it was barebones, mainly because it's one of the best horror movies ever made. But the goodies are just icing on the cake. This movie is going to test how well Lionsgate can work with grain and blacks.

It's a fairly short movie so they can use Mpeg2 if they wanted to, with a 25-30mbs.

Not into extras...other than the 6.1 PCM ...but I am looking forward to seeing a Lions Gate title with hopefully superior and more consistent P/Q than the three LG titles I already own. :)

Is this the first movie on either format to have seamless branching? If so, score one for Blu-ray and bring on Lord of the Rings. I believe it was thedigitalbits that first reported the reason New Line was waiting to deliver LOTR in hi def was the inability to do seamless branching on either format.

Good news about seamless branching, though, if this is correct.

I loved this movie. Just a total blind item for me. I went to the theaters clueless as to what it was all about, saw it, and was wowed by how good it was for this genre. Great stuff, and I look forward to it on BD :)

Play nice. It's just an online forum :)

Probably is. Alien Vs. Predator is the next one.

i thought alien vs predator would be the first title to use seamless branching. but seems now the Descent will be the first 1.

also are all the extras all in 1080p or only a few?

anyway this kind of movies i like to support with my wallet if PQ is nice as well. seems like a release where they tried really hard to make a great release out of it, so i hope it sells well :)

I didn't care for the movie at all... my friend imported the DVD from the UK if I remember right and when I watched it I just disliked it... but I still think it is awesome that this BD is getting such a nice treatment... gets a little tiring seeing very few extras (not that I would watch them, but many others hate a barebones release).

I believe so. X3 had 6.1 DTS-HD MA, but I believe this will be the first to have 6.1 in PCM flavor.

This title is going to be a total blind purchase for me, but from what I have heard about the movie, it will be totally worth it. Being the first title with seamless branching and in-movie interactive experience.

I loved the movie when I saw it in theaters and I can't wait for Dec. 26th so I can watch this movie the way it was supposed to be. (Assuming Lionsgate can make a quality disc...)

The Descent was the first movie I played early this year to try out my new plasma. The film is a real treat, and to me it's easily one of the scariest and frantic survival horrors that came out over the past few years.

I totally agree with another poster who said that the black tones will be extremely important in The Descent. If you haven't seen it, try not to read too much -- you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I just thought the whole thing was completely silly, which is probably why it bombed so badly in theaters.

I mean the things are blind so they can smell and hear really well right? Then why does that one crawl about 2 inches next to that girl who is sweating and whimpering without noticing her? Stuff like that happens throughout the film and totally ruined any suspension of disbelief I had built up.

It cost $7M to make and made $44M worldwide. You consider that a bomb?

Yep.

The studio that created it only receives 50% of the take. The rest goes to the distributors. So the film grossed $22M worldwide.

Now subtract the original production cost and the film still made $15M right? Wrong. They probably spent three times that to strike the prints, deliver them worldwide and market the film.

In other words, the film bombed.

Oh, the death right out of Amityville Horror 3 that had nothing to do with the rest of the film. And yeah, I've never seen an in a movie before.
