Is anyone aware of blu-ray incompatibilities with the new playstation 3? I have Talladega Nights, Underworld: Evolution, and The Fifth Element. The latter two I just picked up.

Talladega and Underworld work flawlessly and look fantastic. When I try to load up The Fifth Element, the disc takes about a minute before the disc icon pops up (instead of 4-5 seconds). Then when I run the disc, it bounces we back after about 30 seconds and gives me an error.

This video will not play
(80029940)

I called Sony and they said The Fifth Element is incompatible with the PS3. I'm assuming this is a firmware problem and due to the fact that The Fifth Element was one of the first Blu-Ray discs. It's just disheartening to think that there could be more compatibility problems in the future.

Another PS3 blunder. Sony REALLY dropped the ball on this console. How can you have compatibility issues with your console when you are the primary driver of the technology. I am taking my PS3 back to CC tomorrow and buying a HD-DVD drive for my 360.

Did Sony say what other titles are incompatible?

Maybe because Fifth Element looks so bad Sony disabled the ability to play this movie in the PS3.

I wouldn't buy the HD DVD drive yet. Wait until after CES 2007 to see the future of both formats.

Sony did not say what other titles were incompatible, but I didn't press them for it either.

I should mention that Sony did say it may be fixed in an upcoming firmware update.

Looks like we are getting another flood of Trolls in here again. I have had no issues playing Blu-Rays on my PS3, Have you tried another copy of the same movie before you blame PS3 who put a better product out with a built in HD drive from day one instead of you having to rig up an add on, who aready released three firmware updates, and replaced bad units with brand new ones from day one. Keep living a lie!

But imagine the nice Christmas gift he could get for his wife by returning the PS3 ... an HD DVD player and about 15 HD DVD movies!

I just tried watching TFE on my PS3, had two hard locks (had to turn off the PS3 and back on again to get any functionality back). Hopefully they get this fixed, or better yet get a remastered version of TFE out. The current one looks like they dragged the print out of the garbage can.

No, the wife won't allow that. In fact, I have not told her that I am getting the HD-DVD drive. That will be a surprise She will be happy that I am returing the PS3 though. She thought I was insane to camp out and spend $600 on a "video game" when I already had a 360.

I can tell you what happens in 2007. We will see many good movies for both formats. Neither will go away any time soon.

And if there are problems with PS3 playback they will fix it with a firmware update.

The market does not need, want or can sustain two different formats. Either HD DVD or Blu-ray will lose support during 2007. This time next year it will be clear which format will replace DVD's.

Anytime someone claims that Sony dropped the ball with PS3 then refer to their xbox360 as if it was perfect is a Troll. People that have a PS3 and have something bad to say about it either, A: Have a bad unit, which Sony will replace with a brand new one within two weeks and wont charge you $130 to fix it, B: have an out dated HDTV, C: Didnt do their homework before buying, D: will never be pleased with anything ever.

Yes, reading these forums anyone would think the X-Box 360 is as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar.

Question: Did you try The Fifth Element on your PS3 and it told you it can't read the disc? Can it read other BD movies?

Please be specific as to how Sony drop the ball.

If you arent happy with PS3 for whatever reason thats your buisness, but why not try a stand alone Blu-Ray player, you just jump on HD-DVDs bandwagon because of one bad disk, thats not PS3s fault. There might just be a fix for it,
I know the xbox was'nt fool proof on day one, it got better thru firmware updates
and that took time.

I enjoy both formats; however I was disappointed when my PS3 had two lock-ups requiring a reboot last night while watching Sky High with my children. On a side note, my HD-A1 has a much worse track record with lockups. Nothing is worse than showing off your new purchase to friends when issues like this occur. It makes them think twice before investing in either format. I just hope this is corrected with a firmware update from Sony. I understand I am an early adopter, but all of us just want to enjoy our new Hi-def entertainment without problems.

I had a few issues with my PS3 as well. It froze playing two movies. No big deal, but all of these first gen players I expect to have some minor issues.

So far I cant play one disc. I got Underworld from block buster and it wouldnt play. I thought it was just because the disc was all scratched up though. It looked like someone went ice skating on the disc.

I can't speak to which titles are incompatible, but I've watched the following titles with no glitches to date.

MI:3
Eight Below
Ice Age 2
Underworld Evolution
X-Men 3
Tears of the Sun
Layer Cake
Superman Returns
Stealth
Chemistry Live (Japanese concert video)
Dinosaurs
Fantastic Four

Perhaps I'll try swapping the disc out where I bought it before I decide to return it and wait for TFE re-release.

Scratches may have went deeper than 0.1 mm. That would do it.

I am now up to 43 Blu-ray discs in my collection. I can't say I have tried every one of them in the Ps3 since getting it, but I have looked at most of them. Every BD I have put in the PS3, including The Fifth Element, has played flawlessly. No skips, freezes, hiccups, or anything else untoward. In all honesty, I wish I could say the same thing for HD DVD.

On the other hand, I haven't met a stand-alone BD player that I would take over the HD-A2 yet. In the Blu-universe (Bluniverse?), the PS3 is an anomaly. A really nice anomaly, but still a unique product.
