35 screen captures from Valhalla Rising (2009) [Momentum Pictures - UK Region B].

***

This release has a veritable cornucopia of video problems which might not be completely evidenced in these shots. Perhaps the most serious is severe banding/posterization in a number of scenes, especially in transitional fades, with the most egregious and enduring examples occurring in the "Part III: Men of God" fog-ridden segment.

Secondary in my opinion, but far more pervasive, is the constant appearance of aliasing, pixellation and color fringing artifacts. Apparently, this was filmed on RED and captured at 4K, so it is possible that some of these problems were induced by improper downscaling for the BD, but they might also be inherent to the source. I do not know.

It is definitely a shame, since I often found the photography to be very creative and visually striking. Definitely an interesting film that was far more quietly contemplative than I expected.

EDIT: Because I don't think I properly represented the banding problem in the above shots, here is a particular example of how it can sometimes intrude even on a simple shot:

Antichrist (also RED) has the same kind of fringing, and banding too.

35 screen captures from Starcrash (1978) [Shout! Factory - US Region ABC].

Unusual for a "Roger Corman's Cult Classics" release, but there is no nudity or graphic violence to be found in the film and thus the above screenshots are safe for perusing at work.

19 screens added to Alice in Wonderland... sort of. Media Player Classic crashed every time I tried to play the main film, literally not even a second in. It had no issues playing the pop-up bonus mode, so that's what I had to go with.

Chris, it appears it's another RED One shot production where the post house didn't know how to handle the footage. It's clear as day that they only did a 2K debayer instead of a full debayer, which is why there is massive aliasing. The reason for all of the banding is because the footage is so clean. The conversion from 10-12 bit linear to 8-bit is typically done via rounding, which creates these artifacts. The reason you don't see this in film productions is because film grain acts as noise to hide the perception of this.

All of the RED users love to cry and shout how awesome the camera is, but then they turn around and botch all of the picture quality of using it in post-production.

That makes quite a bit of sense - thanks for the explanation!

Indeed, and as I mentioned, it seems like there might be a quite excellent picture hiding underneath all of the video anomalies so it really is a shame about the BD.

Since Dark Zero has already taken the initiative.

24 Screenshots of They Live - Italian release

BTW Dark_zero, your screenshots seem to have inaccurate black-levels, and also some reduced definition due to compression.

Are you using a proper capturing method?

If you compare your first shot to the one below, you can see the difference.

35 screen captures from Piranha (2010) [Sony - US Region A].

I don't think I put anything too objectionable in this set of shots, but the movie certainly earned its R-rating and then some with gore and nudity, so care should be taken.

thanks im always interested to learn something new.
Well anyway i dont see big changes from my pic to yours. Also keep in mind its not the exact frame.
Anyway im not a pro. I simply use KMP and used to save in jpg (not bmp thats why there could be some compression artifacts, even if for me pics are the same) in original format frame. If KMP cannot save i use Media Player Classic Home Cinema with all the filters off.

Off course if is there any better program to use i'll be pleased to switch!

At least while weating for the new version of Bdinfo with screenshoots options too

Thanks
