SPHE ANNOUNCES Q1 BLU-RAY SLATE

-- CASINO ROYALE TO MAKE ITS DEBUT ON HIGH DEF --

FULL-LENGTH ANIMATED FEATURE OPEN SEASON
FIRST MPEG-4 AVC ENCODED TITLE FROM SPHE

FEBRUARY PACKED WITH 50GB RECENT RELEASE TITLES INCLUDING
STRANGER THAN FICTION & RUNNING WITH SCISSORS

CES, LAS VEGAS (January 8, 2007) -Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) President David Bishop today announced, as part of the company's first quarter Blu-ray line-up, that Bond will be making his way to Blu-ray with the much anticipated release of Casino Royale on March 13. Casino Royale, starring Bond newcomer Daniel Craig, grossed more than $400 million at the box office worldwide and will debut on a 50GB dual-layer disc encoded in MPEG-4 AVC. Consumers can see even more of Craig who also stars in Layer Cake, a riveting thriller set in the U.K. underworld, when it hits Blu-ray (50GB) that same day.

With software sales up 700 percent since the mid-November launch of Playstation 3 and other Blu-ray hardware from manufacturers, the market is poised for maximum impact blockbusters like Casino Royale, said David Bishop, President, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. We're proud to be the first to deliver Bond on Blu-ray with the best picture and sound quality available today. This is just the tip of the iceberg for Blu-ray in 2007.

Sony Pictures Animation's first full-length animated feature, Open Season, starring Ashton Kutcher and Martin Lawrence, will mark the debut of the first MPEG-4 AVC encoded BD title from SPHE on January 30. In addition to Casino Royale, three more dual-layer 50GB box office hits were announced for Q1. Gridiron Gang, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, will be available January 16 followed by Running with Scissors, with Annette Bening in a Golden Globe®-nominated performance, on February 6 and Stranger Than Fiction, featuring writer and producer Will Ferrell, February 27.

Thank God Fox is in the BD camp. Their impressive list helps make up for Sony's tiny list. Other than Casino Royale I'm not too impressed. Where's the Spidey's?

I've been rather impressed with their recent MPEG2 BDs but yeah, MPEG4 AVC titles should be even more pleasing, especially to the Sony doubters.

Remember this list is only for the 1ST QUARTER of the year. Most of these were already announced. Hostel, Jerry Maguire and A Few Good Men are new titles.

Of course you could get it right now from the UK. It playes fine on U.S. players

Is there any chance Sony could make another announcement (i.e. Spidey) before the end of CES? Or is this all we get for now?

Dual Supporter as of January 4, 2007!
Feels so nice...

Ha!

Overall I am very pleased with today's announcements. Some gems coming and makes me feel more confident going "blu". Sony hopefully will have some great Q2 stuff going but Paramount really needs to get in the game IMHO...

As others have pointed out, they're doubtless scheduled out beyond Q1. Hint: Spider-Man 3 hits theatres in May. I think this is pretty solid for the first three months of the year.

My sole disappointment is that Casino Royale is so bare bones. Not even a commentary?

Holy **** there are a lot of features on REApocalypse. I'm definitely getting that one next week, but where the hell is RE1?

The format wars are over Primal, you lose - Megatron from Beast Machines (partially)

So long HD-DVD, I will miss you no matter how much I complained about Combo Discs.

I think RE:A sold better than RE. I say this because didn't RE:A release before RE on UMD, too?

I don't understand holding back Spiderman. If it were me, I'd either hold Spiderman 1 AND 2 for a dual box set for Spiderman 3's release OR I would go ahead and whip the masses into a frenzy with Spiderman soon and Spiderman 2 on the day of Spiderman 3's release. On Blu-ray. When everyone gets home from seeing Spiderman 3, they're going to want to watch something awesome. And they'll go to the store, see a floor model PS3 playing Spiderman 2. Whispering, "Buy me for Blu-ray."

Suddenly, the whole proposition is made plain for the consumer. Be Blu.

It amazes me that the studios aren't doing this type of thing more for both HD DVD and Blu-ray along with day and date releases with DVD. It's almost as though the studios just don't understand how to make money with these formats.

Yeah this just says Q1. So far CES is a big left hook from the content side of it from all the other studios. Spidey 1&2 could be the right hand hit of a two-punch combo... maybe they're just saving it for a March/April release.

All these announcements now... Universal responds with what they have left. Then SPHE and maybe Disney announces one of their animated hits for the KO sometime in the March timeframe...

We still have a couple more days of CES, though.

I believe Sony HE is also considering the fact that most people here would have to get a second or third job getting all the BD movies for 2007. Announcing more would just stress these people out - in a good way.

I think it's about pacing. Lionsgate, Fox and Disney pretty much filled the first quarter slate. Add bi-format Paramount and Warner and you get a weekly schedule that is full to the brim. Without a bigger installed base of consumers - even with the PS3 sales taken into account, releasing too much too soon has a dentrimental effect of filling up stores' backroom inventories.

Where are the movies that they have been putting in previews ever since they came out??

Legends of the Fall
Spiderman
Once upon a time in Mexico?
Bram Stokers Dracula

Fox really is amazing in what they have listed, I was overwhelmed by them! They will be receiving a lot of money from me soon. Buts whats up with the limited amount announced by sony now? I especially want to see Legends of the Fall because of the Cinematography, its a beautiful movies with a backdrop in Montana!! Speaking of that what studio owns A river runs through it, its also got nice scenery. Seems like Universal is also not releasing much on HD-DVD, hmmm....

I think the above is correct, that they're letting Fox and Disney load Q1, so as not to overglut.

I'm quite sure Spider-Man 1 and 2 will come out a week before 3 hits theaters. Sony would be crazy not to, especially since they are releasing the Spider-Man 2 Extended Edition in April on DVD.

Nyg, I agree, I want RE1, Underworld EE (I won't buy UE until either 1 is out, or the EE comes out), Hellboy DC, and Desperado from Sony.

Paintit77, Sony does not own the Bond movies except Casino Royale, Fox does. They are also releasing 6 of them in March. Personally, I don't care as I just bought the Ultimate Edition DVD sets, and most of the movies are great, but the only one I'd probably buy on BR is Diamonds are Forever, the rest just aren't worth me buying again, especially when the new DVDs look near HD.

And of course, Casino Royale is a must own.

The format wars are over Primal, you lose - Megatron from Beast Machines (partially)

Dr. Cain, I disagree. I think the new DVDs although an improvement are not up to par. The soundtracks are in need of a complete overhaul (DTS should not sound as weak as they do) and their is a lot of picture noise in them. Compared to the original DVDs, yes better but not GREAT better!
I want the full color and better sound! Sony owns 20% of the entire bond collection with FOX, Comcast and the Texas boys owning the rest! I want the films and BR is a total let down without them! I liked Casino Royale but it is not a major purchase for me. I am huge Film buff but I prefer the classics! Most of the newer films to me are not that great. I will never own Spiderman, XMEN, Fatal Attraction or as of right now, 80% of the HD-DVD and BR Released FILMS!
So I am forced to wait!

I had never seen most of the older Bond movies before those sets, so I am quite happy with them. As for the DTS audio sounding weak, I see no way the audio could be booming, especially with the ones from the 60s and 70s.

As for your comment about prefering the classics, that is fine, everyone has their own tastes, but I think you are really missing out on new movies as they are just as great. Plus the special effects in new movies are so much better. That isn't to say that old movie's effects were poor, as quite a bit of them are great, but when you compare effects between today and back then, you just get a lot of ew. Does that mean effects is all a movie needs? Yes and no. Some movies (mostly action movies) need to have flashy effects, while others need to have a combination of both effects and story.

The format wars are over Primal, you lose - Megatron from Beast Machines (partially)

So long HD-DVD, I will miss you no matter how much I complained about Combo Discs.
