I couldn't resist anymore. Working at Best Buy and having to sell PS3s all the time broke me in. We had a unit with Talladega Nights in today, so after my shift, I bought it, along with Kingdom of Heaven, Fantastic Four, X-Men 3, and Ice Age 2 (mostly because my g/f would only approve of me buying it if I bought her IA2). I have no games right now, as we are out of Resistance and DMC4 is not out until April (hopefully), but I did watch FF and TN so far. FF's quality was amazing and is what BR should have been from teh beginning. It matches HD-DVD greatly. As for TN, the quality was great, but this movie was hardly funny at all.

Anyway, I can't wait for RE:A next week, and Saw 2 and 3 on teh 23rd. Any word when the DC of Saw 1 will be out? Oh, and has Sony announced Underworld Evolution EE yet? I don't want to buy it just to have the EE come out 3 months later.

The format wars are over Primal, you lose - Megatron from Beast Machines (partially)

So long HD-DVD, I will miss you no matter how much I complained about Combo Discs.

You had one of the units with TN inside it still? As in one of the first 500k?

After reading the reviews and word of mouth, Fantastic 4 is on my list (and due to my moritorium on DVD purchases for most of the last year, I've so far passed on it anyways).

Sounds like a return from an ebayer if it still had TN.

Nice work. Congrats on the purchase. I love my PS3. That's good news for a great game developer (Insomniac) that the game is sold out.

I bet they love that attach rate for Resistance.

You should have enough fun just playing the demos. Gran Turismo HD & Motorstorm have been owning my free time recently!

Congrats fellow neighbor Kain! I know how you are feeling about your purchase. I just got my 20gig from Amazon today and it also had the TN in it.

Won't buy any games for a while (going to rent), but I'm starting to collect a stack of BD movies.

Yup I'm just another one of those gamers that won't watch movies on their PS3.

One thing I have noticed is that I need a new tv. I've had my HD for 4 years, and while it still has plenty of life in it, I need something a little more crisper and that supports 1080p, let alone 720p.

I don't think returns can go back to inventory as they may potentially contain personal information. Someone told me that they have to send back to Sony.

I bought a 20GB from Circuit City last Friday that still had the Talladega Nights movie inside, unfortunatelly I had to take it back yesterday because the PS3 was overheating and turning off by itself every 15 mins to half an hour.

I couldn't exchange it, because they were out of the 20GBs, all they have right now are 60GBs available.

I couldn't help it now. We are finally getting quality movies out there. It doesn't mean I'm going to stop supporting HD-DVD, as I will probably still buy every WB and Paramount title released on that format unless it is a combo disc, but now I no longer need to be out on movies.

With that said, I still need to get a lot of stuff though. I need a headset, the BR remote (which we were out of as well), the memory card adapter, and some freaking games. As I said, I may get Resistance, I'm not too sure, as I'm a little sick of FPS, but DMC4 and Heavenly Sword should be out soon. Plus I can play God of War II on it, and today, I'm going to see how Legacy of Kain Defiance looks upconverted.

I downloaded the demo to Motor Storm, and I don't know why, but I am very disapointed. I loved the demo I played at BB and Target, but for some reason, this demo seems different. The music is not the same, and instead of the kick ass instrumental, there is lyrical music from a band I don't like (I forgot their name), and the controls seem sluggish. Taking 2 hours to download it doesn't help matters either, especially since I want to get the Resistance demo, but now I don't know if I should.

Any way, is Silent Hill and Stargate worth getting on BR or should I hold off for right now?

The PS3 doesn't upconvert PS2 games. It plays them in 480i, and only if the game supports 480p does it do that. GT4's 1080i mode doesn't work on it either.

Silent Hill, though I love the film, doesn't look all that great on BD. It's one of the MPEG-2 BD25s that has a low bitrate and suffers as a result. I'd wait for the inevitable re-release.

Actually I'm pretty sure the PS2 games and the SD DVD playback are using different display paths. According to friends who are using component video, PS2 games look better on PS2 than on PS3. SD DVD deinterlacing actually doesn't look half bad on the PS3 viewed on a display with good upscaling for progressive materials --- but this is only with movie sources --- never tried with sports or video.

In my case, I have launch day old PS2, and for some reason, the madcatz multi-format component cable would not work with it, I'm stuck with S-video, which means really ugly 480i even for FF XII cut scenes.

I have both of these but in all honesty I can't recommend them. Both have their moments but are pretty inconsistent in the PQ dept. Stargate is also missing some subtitles when Ra is talking. I'm confident both of these will be reissued in better versions at some point and I'll be replacing both when that happens. In the meantime, I'd recommend renting these instead of buying them.

That's kind of wrong -- you're right that it doesn't upconvert/upscale games, at least not an appreciable amount. I'm pretty sure PS3 converts the output to 480p, regardless of what the actual game output. Part of the problem with the BC and the reason some PS2 games looking worse on PS3 is because of that conversion and an apparent missing step (the ugly scaling happens in games that don't use standard 480p frame buffer sizes -- PS3 scales them differently than PS2 did... PS3 is missing the little scaler PS2 had for odd frame buffer sizes, iirc)

And GT4s 1080i mode works just fine on PS3 too, I've been using it for the last few weeks.

The motorstorm demo on PSN is more recent than the kiosk version -- it doesn't have the framerate issues and is slightly different. The music in the PSN demo has two or three tracks, iirc -- the lyrical one is an old nirvana track, if I'm not mistaken (not sure, don't particularly like it either). The track from the kiosk is still in the PSN demo, just keep playing and you'll get it (I like that track too). The full game has a bunch of tracks and you'll likely be able to pick n choose what you want playing, from the list. The controls are no different than the kiosk demo though, at least I haven't heard that before or noticed it myself. Definitely DL the Resistance demo, GT HD demo is nice if you like GT games, the F1 demo might be worth a look and check out some of the full games (or at least their demos -- blast factor is fun, for example).

Silent hill is okay -- it was an early MPEG-2 title, so it isn't the greatest PQ... the Audio track on it is pretty scary though! (in a good way). Not sure on Stargate... don't have it.

Yeah, so I found out about the PS2 games not being upscaled. SUCKS!! I wanted to play Legacy of Kain in HD. Oh well.

I downloaded the Resistance demo, which surprisingly only took about 15-20 minutes to download, and it was bigger than Motor Storm in file size. It is pretty cool, but I'm not sure if I'm sold on the game just yet. The controls were a little odd.

All right, no need to rush out and get SH ir Stargate right now. I'm sure they'll rerelease SH when SH2 comes to theaters, so right now, I'll stick with my DVD.

Hadn't realized a Silent Hill sequel was planned but I'm all for it. Good movie and I'd agree that'd be the perfect time for the re-release.

Eh, the GT demo reminds me of why I hate most racing games. Burnout is the only racing series for me. I got the REsistance demo, and it is cool, but I'm not sold on the game yet. Plus I still need to finish CoD3 for 360 and play GoW with my buddies online, along with finishing sidequests in both Zelda and FFXII, so I think I'm set for a while.

Don't feel bad, I didn't feel any of the PS3 games appealed to me yet so far either. I did buy 13 BDs so far and 1 PS2 game, God of War which supports "progressive scan, widescreen and surround" modes and looks nice and sharp (although don't expect miracles). Hoping the good games come out soon.

In the meantime I'm happy with the movies.

The Single Player game of Resistance is great, but the real fun is in 40 player team deathmatches on PSN!

I'm not a deathmatch person. I don't like shooting one guy and being shot in the back by 10 people. It takes the fun out of it, which is why I'm mad my buddies only play deathmatches in Gears of War. At least I know people who play the missions in PDZ.

The real fun in MotorStorm comes when you switch into first person view and enable the motion-sensing controls (press start during a race to bring up the menu, option at bottom). The controller basically becomes a steering wheel. Playing it on my 61" also really makes for a cool experience. MotorStorm is the next game that I'm really looking forward to.

I like Resistance a lot. I'm only a couple hours into the campaign, but it's one of the best FPS I've played in awhile. The weapons in it are great.

If you just want something fun to play, download the GripShift demo. It sold me on buying the whole thing for $10. It's a lot of fun to play!

Lack of force feed back in GT HD and all racing games announced for PS3 is a major bummer. You can't have a realistic racing SYM without proper wheel support and force feedback. My display doesn't support 720p, so most of the game demos I've tried looks like crap. Sony really needs to come up with a major software upgrade to fix these major scaling deficits.

Motorstorm and Heavenly Sword will be my first PS3 games, but they won't be out until March? In the meantime I have the demos, my 360, and my steadily growing collection of BD's to keep me occupied.
