Just picked up a copy at Circuit City. It was stickered at $19.99, but rang up at $24.99. I was surprised the register didn't flag it for breaking the street date. I haven't viewed it yet, but will post as soon as I get a chance. Wish they had Casino Royale instead, of course.

I watched this on SD for the first time on Monday and I was very impressed with it. It looks like the kind of movie that would greatly benefit from an HD transfer as well......I pre-ordered it yesterday

Panasonic 42PX75U Plasma
PS3 60 GB
Xbox 360 Elite
Toshiba HD-A2
Pioneer VSX-1018
Polk Audio RM6750

Any chance it will ring up $19.99 on the date of release? That sounds like a decent price for a new Blu-ray release.

I ordered it as a blind buy with Casino Royale. So I'll have a Daniel Craig fix next week. LC looked like an interesting story.

I'm going to go pop it in the PS3 in a sec. And for the curious, I'll be viewing it on a Panasonic 47" CRT @ 1080i and with uncompressed 5.1 through an Onkyo 604. Will post my impressions in a few.

After 20 mins of viewing or so, the transfer is exactly what I expected it to be. It's a fairly recent movie, so the print is squeaky clean. The blacks are deep, the colors are vivid, and the PQ is very smooth and filmlike. More along the lines of The Prestige than something like Crank, which has a lot of pop and vividness. I'm guessing it's a very accurate representation of the source material, and probably replicates the theatrical experience well.
I was more impressed with the sound, actually. I'm really beginning to love hearing uncompressed PCM on these blu ray releases. It's a talky pic, but the sound effects and music sounded like it should, rich and full, exactly what you'd expect from PCM.
If anything, this is just whetting my appetite for 007.

Anyone know if the U.S. release has the same video encoding as the Japanese version?

I would imagine it has the same MPEG2 encoded transfer. Doesn't make sense to do a recode just for the NA market.

Yeah, it's mpeg2, with an average bit rate of about 22, but often goes up in the 30 range. After examining the PQ more closely, I was slightly disappointed with the contrast and black levels. In many scenes, the blacks resemble a dark grey more than black.

If it's anything like The Prestige then it's going to be awesome.

There is a scene in the movie where actor Daniel Craig did that pose with his gun that made me chuckle. Anyways this movie I highly recommend.

Is the movie itself worth owning though?

The format wars are over Primal, you lose - Megatron from Beast Machines (partially)

So long HD-DVD, I will miss you no matter how much I complained about Combo Discs.

this morning i picked up layer cake for 19.99 and casino royale for 27.99 at frys. i put it in for a couple of minutes and it totally wigged out. it skipped chapters and turned off the sound. i restarted the ps3 and its working fine now. it looks pretty good, source is still in good shape as expected from a recent film. there are no artifacts that i can see and i agree with the prestige comparison mentioned above.

and yes, the movie is worth owning.

So has anyone viewed Layer Cake on Blu-ray? How's the picture quality? How's the audio?

More importantly, how's the movie? Any good?

We really need a mini-review from one of you guys/gals....come on!!!

PQ is pretty solid all around. I would say mid tier one. Its pretty sharp overall with minimal grain and great color. Audio is outstanding...features a pretty good soundtrack and it rocks in PCM as usual for Sony titles. The movie itself is about a 7. Not bad considering it can be had for $17.95 on Amazon with the %10 discount.

Loved the rat on the chest. Oh and Sienna Miller! Went out and bought the soundtrack after watching that bar scene over and over and over!
