My Blu-Ray Planet Earth arrived today and so far I have watched about half of Disk 1. I am loving what I've seen so far. The thing is I am inviting some friends over tomorrow, and I want to wow them with the Planet Earth content on my 46" Bravia (sorry I'm a show-off). Since I wont have time to watch all of the disks and I haven't watched the boradcast version, I'd like to know which episode/chapter of Planet Earth would be the best demo material.

So if the guys who have watched the entire series could pick their top two, I can decide which episode to show them. I know this is subjective, but it could make my job easier. Thanks.

I don't own the BD but I have seen them on TV. My favorite shots are the Great White attacking the Seal in... I think oceans or something like that and the slow motion shots of the crocodiles getting the wildebeest in Africa. If anyone can elaborate which episodes these were in that would be cool.

To be honest, it wouldn't matter which disc you popped in. They would be impressed no matter what. It's all just amazing footage.

I've gotten through the caves episode and all of them have some great shots. The birds of paradise and flowers in the first episode, the croc shots and fish shots in the fresh water episode, that crazy white salamander in the caves episode. I'd say just pop it in and let it roll.

Ep1 pole to pole (it's the only one I've even seen!)

In terms of content, rather than picture, I think the bit where the goat (?) gets chased down a cliff face by a big cat and jumps in a river is one of the best bits alongside the cercoya (sp?) emerging from a 17 year hibernation (that one is seasonal forests)

Great white eating the sea otter. Amazing.

I think the episode "Fresh Water" is a good one. It has the giant Salamanders, and the crocs getting the wildebeast in slow mo. Also the worlds largest lake in Siberia and the panning shots of Victoria falls.

So far Pole to Pole was nice due to variety and the highlighting nature of an overview...but for an individual episode I think Fresh Water is my fave so far.

My cat likes the polar bears in the first disk. She normally ignores everything on the screen.

So far I like the caves disk best. But I have not seen all of it yet.

I've only seen disc 3 so far, but I loved the birds of paradise, and the saltwater scenes with the corals and fish looked fantastic.

I agree, the birds were incredible, some of the best images I've ever seen.

As far as content, the snow leopard sequence was very cool and really didn't look too bad at all given the conditions.

Pole to Pole will give you scenes from many of the other shows, maybe that would be good for an overview.

Thanks for your inputs. I played parts of Pole to Pole and Mountains. Needless to say, my friends were very impressed. One friend was planning to buy a PS3 around Christmas time. He has now decided to buy it right away.

The best looking eposide to me is Shallow Seas, some of the scenes in it like the ones with the Sea Snakes are beyond belief.

My gf and I have watched Shallow Seas 3 times now...and haven't even gotten a few of the episodes watched.

Caves was better than I expected (not the best demo though), Ice Worlds less so...mostly because more of it was things I already had seen in other shows.

Check out the jungles episode. OMFG - the time lapse fungi is just eye popping. The entire episode is just out of this world.

1st and second disks are ok, didnt care for the ice episode... though I did like deserts...

I've watched half thus far (disc 1 and 3). I highly recommend this to anyone considering purchasing it. I bought this mostly because I thought it would be good "demo" material. Well, there are most certainly a lot of scenes with eye-popping clarity and color. But there are also many scenes that don't look that great PQ wise. Some of this was probably caused by using a very long telephoto lens, and it looks like these scenes were slightly out of focus.

Despite anything else, this is simply a very well done series. Some of the photography is simply amazing. In fact, most of the photography is amazing! Let's just say that I feel that I have got more enjoyment out of watching this than I expected due to the subject matter itself, forgetting about "demo" material. Great stuff!

Don't have the disks, but I did watch the show on Discovery HD. I also loved the shark eating the sea lion, and the snow leopard scene. But one of the scenes that really showed off HD was the one which showed a flock of a gazillion geese, all moving as a single organism. On SD, those would just be a bunch of featureless white dots, but on HD you could see each bird. Fantastic.

Im so dissapointed with the planet earth picture quality. The white noise pulsing is so distracting I would never consider this "demo material"

I blame VC-1 encoding.

There are noise pulsations in both the MPEG2 1080i BBC caps, DivX HD encodes, and the VC1 disks. Its in the source.

Actually, for some reason, I believe this scene (shark eating the sea lion) is on both Disc 1 and Disc 3.

I think you're correct... I believe it was on Pole to Pole (disc 1) only as a clip.
