I try to translate. (the important points)

During a recent press conference people from Pioneer said that Universal has ended the exclusive contract with Toshiba.

There is still no confirmation from Universal.

Universal reportedly leaves HD-DVD camp

In a press conference, spokesmen of Blu-ray supporter Pioneer claimed, that Universal Home Entertainment will cancel the exclusive contract with the HD-DVD camp respectively their biggest hardware company, Toshiba. They said, the contract has already been cancelled, it just didn't come operative yet. If this is true, Universal would be free (on a long term) to publish movies for the competing format Blu-ray Disc, and the HD DVD Promotion Group would lose their only supporter among the Hollywood studios, after Paramount and Warner already left.

At the end of January, Universal affirmed their support for HD DVD and announced 100 releases for the year, and rejected any cooperatoin with the Blu-ray camp. The exclusive Blu-ray supporters are Fox, Disney and Sony, while Warner and Paramount (including Dreamworks) publish for both formats. The strategy of publishing for both formats could be profitable for Universal: The percentage of the studio at the HD DVD sales between January 1st and March 18th war 35.6%, but only 11.1% of the total HD sales. In the same period, Warner sold 46.4% of the HD DVDs and 19.3% of the BLu-ray Discs, and is #1 in all HD sales with 27.7 percent.

Universal Pictures Germany did not comment this, while Toshiba Germany said, they don't know anything about Universal leaving HD DVD.

(nij/c't)

Google translation (for what it's worth):

Quote:

Universal wants to step out allegedly of the Hp-DVD-camp In the context of a press meeting representatives of the Blu ray advocate maintained Pioneer that universal Home Entertainment stepped out of the exclusive contract with the Hp-DVD-camp and/or its largest representatives on the hardware side Toshiba. Thus the Studio quit the agreement, the notice is not only not effective allegedly already. If this report should be confirmed, thereby the way would be free for film publications on the competition medium Blu ray Disc for universal (in the long run). Above all however the hp DVD graduation Group would lose their only remaining supporter after Paramount and Warner under Hollywood Studios. Only at the end of January had affirmed universal again its support for the hp DVD, 100 new publications in this Hp-Disc-format for the current year had announced and Blu ray to the Disc a renewed refusal had given. The advocates of the competition format could win those of Hollywood Studios 20th Century Fox, Disney and Sony exclusively for itself, Warner and Paramount (inclusive Dreamworks) supply both bearings with titles. The strategy to drive double-railed could quite pay for universal: Thus the portion of Studio was to 18 with the Hp-DVD-sales between the beginning of the year 2007 and that. March with full 35.6 per cent, with the Hp-Disc-Gesamtverkäufen however only with 11,1 per cent. Warner sold 46.4 per cent of the hp DVDs and 19.3 per cent Blu ray of the Discs in the same period, with which the Studio came altogether on 27,7 per cent of all Hp-Discs and reserved seat 1. Universal Pictures Germany delivered on the demand of heise on-line so far no statement to the statement, while Toshiba Germany explained to know from a retreat on the part of universal from the Hp-DVD-partnership nothing.

I have been told by my sources the contract expires at the end of 2007. So they are still expecting the announcement during CES 2008. I guess if Universal can get out of the contract earlier (due to some clause) we could start to see Universal on Blu-ray before the end of 2007.

Google translator translates it to this:

Universal allegedly exclusive support of the hp DVD wants to give up
In the context of a press meeting representatives of the Blu ray advocate maintained Pioneer that universal Home Entertainment stepped out of the exclusive contract with the Hp-DVD-camp and/or its largest representatives on the hardware side Toshiba. Thus the Studio quit the agreement, the notice is not only not effective allegedly already. As much as I want this to be true, I kind of feel like that if it were, we'd see it on a more major website and not something like this.

9.5.07 is May 9th, the date of the story.

So the end of the year is probably more likely than September 5th.

Universal did pledge back at CES to support HD DVD through 2007. "Great, but what happens in 2008?" I asked in the HD DVD Software forum, for which I got attacked left, right and center.

What's funny is that the HD DVD camp will shoot this down hard...while meanwhile, they've taken the Chinese HD DVD player rumor to heart just as bad.

It's just speculation. It says "anscheinend" which means "apparantly" or "angeblich" which means supposedly. So this is only a rumor.

You have to take into consideration that Pioneer, a Blu-ray advocate, spread this claim.

Come on, in January Universal announced 100 titles for this year. Why would they now jump of the HD DVD train. I think Toshiba would try anything to keep Universal. They probably know that HD DVD will perish w/o Universal.

Jiffy,

The date of 9.5.07 is today's date in European standards. They do the day first, then the month, then the year. The article is from today.
