http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QunV9fiwtoE

You can get the barebones version of DYRL for $84 at http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=BLJS-93007

Honestly, I will probably spring for the series box too BECAUSE I JUST CAN'T HELP MYSELF.

My pants just got excited!

Well, looks like I'll be out $84. No choice. I can reverse engineer the Blu-Ray and add subtitles. I have the subtitle track.

Heck, if I was able to get my hands on the dubbed track I could add that too.

I wonder if it will be a BD50 or BD25. If the film itself fits on a BD25 then I will be able to avoid creating a compressed mkv.

The trailer is cool, but has frame stuttering, which I imagine is due to them using the wrong settings when they created the YouTube trailer. Colors are insanely vibrant, unlike the muddy looking prior transfers.

I went ahead and sprang for the DYRL "box-of-junk" too. It's freaking DYRL, man. The Macross series box, now...I'd be getting that for the extras, TBH (Perfect Memory!), but $600 is a big pill to swallow.

It has some interlacing problems as well, but I still think it reveals that the remastering was pretty successful. Colors not only look strong, but they corrected the bluish quality of the last DVD release.

And speaking of corrections, it looks like they're also taking the time to fix some mistakes...

So Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is getting the BD uber-box treatment on June 26, with a Macross-sized price tag to match. Ouch. eek.gif (I'm not sure if this makes it better or worse that this is a Right Stuf exclusive--gee, thanks, Aniplex!)

Aniplex, the enemy of poor anime fans everywhere. North America being the same Blu-ray region as Japan hurts us on anime pricing.

I don't think I've even finished the DVD set, I'll bide my time, until the UK or Australia release it in a more modestly priced form.

Akira, the 25th Anniversary BD: November 12. (Amazon pre-order, check.) A modest selection of bells and whistles (some of which I think are mirrored from the previous BD release, I'm not certain), but the one thing that sold me on this is the inclusion of the original Streamline dub--"Men, we're going to the Olympics!"--as well as the 2001 Pioneer/Animaze dub.

I know GERRY ANDERSON'S THUNDERBIRDS isn't anime (unless you count T-BIRDS 2086), but figured I'd post here anyway. I can't afford the Japanese limited edition blu-ray release of the tv series and the UK release (according to the reviews) have aspect ratio problems. Plus UK is region B whereas Japan release is all region. Does anybody know if the US will get a release of this classic show?

This is interesting indeed...Japan got a Bubblegum Crisis BD release in Japan back in 2008, and now Robert Woodhead (yes, that Robert Woodhead) is spearheading a Kickstarter for a domestic release. Considering it just started, I don't think there'll be a problem with it coming out next year...

Hell, if I had known, I'd have mugged Robert on the street and told him to "Shut up and take my money!". BGC is one of my faves from the VHS days and I still have Hurricane Live on VHS.

Ghost In The Shell is getting another Blu release. New HD transfer of the film - no idea which version of it - and it sports a 5.1 English sound mix with a Stereo Japanese track.

Ground Control To Psychoelectric Girl looks really nice on Blu-ray. It was easier to keep up with anime on Blu-ray a couple of years ago. Now it seems like every other show gets an American BD release.

It's cheaper if you are region free and can import the UK sets. Sword Art Online II just began last week.

I have been watching it, slow start so far but episode 2 had a great fight scene.

The whole series used to be on youtube officially but they made them private leading up to the release of season 2. Now I want to buy them but crap at those prices, and I lack a region free player (I have 5 bluray players already...)

I'll be curious to hear your impressions when you get it. Probably not the sort of film that would interest the action fans, but the attention to detail looks impressive on this.

Are you using a 2K or 4K screen btw?

'Attack on Titan' was a decent anime set. Two seasons of discs out so far. Pricing isn't bad at Best buy and others.

I think I bought that earlier this year when Funimation had a sale. But I never got around to watching it. My anime backlog is getting longer and longer.

I haven't made the leap yet to a 4K screen, I'll give the technology a little more time to mature. I did get around to watching The Garden of Words on Blu-ray. The movie does boast impressive animation. Not the best I've recently seen, but certainly up there in video quality. It certainly has the best animated rain I've ever seen, special care seems to have been taken with it. The backgrounds are very realistic. Apparently the main setting was closely modeled after an actual Japanese garden, it is mentioned in the closing credits.

The new A/V demo for anime fans is Short Peace, the anthology of short features. Stunning picture quality and one of the best audio tracks I've heard this year.
ADU likes this.

I'll need to check out "Short Peace". On amazon it's listed as "Short Peace: Complete Collection". Is that the one?

If it is I'll probably pick it up since it's under $20 right now.

Yes, that is the disc. Stellar A/V quality and a couple of the shorts are very entertaining. Each short has a different director, so the animation styles vary wildly.

I am waiting for something like Robotech to come out again. Long and epic in scope.

Legend of Galactic Heroes was fantastic and fit this type of paradigm.

Code geass I liked along these lines.

Death Note was really quite decent as well.

Gundam Unicorn is visually great but gets into the usual Gundam nonsense with some mecha pilot who is a pacifist at heart ... Blah blah blah. There is something about Gundam where I feel the story always drags too much.

Like i said before, Titans is good but the 3rd season is not out and so the story is not completed. Otherwise its a very well produced anime with epic scope.

I usually don't care for the other anime non-scifi genre stuff. There is SO MUCH hit and miss anime out there that simply isn't worth watching and certainly not worth paying for and owning.

I watch a lot of the stuff from Funimation with their streaming app on the Roku. It costs less than $5 a month when paid years on the special. Previously I paid $8 a month. But I'll watch it from the streaming app and if I really like it i will purchase the BD. I've purchased way too many anime BDs these last few years because of this. Netflix a0slo has some funimation and non funimation anime. So that is another streaming service I use to figure out if I want to purchase it.

I purchased Attack on Titan earlier this year but it is in my backlog along with several other BD anime titles. Next on my list is to re-watch A Certain Magical Index on BD before I watch the second season on BD. I initially watched the first season from the Funimation streaming app.

Cowboy Bebop showed up on my doorstep yesterday! Great improvement over its SD releases, lots of little extras that I haven't had before. $50 felt a bit steep, but I'm not regretting it.

This is probably the best time of year to purchase anime. Rightstuf's huge Christmas sale and Amazon's annual Funimation clearance leads to the best discounts seen all year.
