Yay. They used the same old DVD boxes and put Blu-Ray logos on them.

Since they're supposed to be some of the original theatrical artwork - at least I believe Wings is - isn't that a good thing?

I guess. I've never seen the theatrical artwork for Patlabor.

One thing that did bug me was that even the new remastered Patlabor DVD was slightly misframed. Yes, it was much improved over the last transfer, but it was still off a bit. I assume the BD will have the same issues.

The VHS and LD used the same artwork (English text included), so I'm willing to believe what you see there is the original poster art. I'm kinda' hoping for the Shirow Masamune art from the LD BOX set on Ghost in the Shell, though only time will tell.

Back on topic... Yes asia says its Japanese release is delayed but lists December 31st, 2008 as the release date. They also still have the thing listed as Akaira (Blu-ray/HD-DVD) so the info definitely could use an update.

Google translated link of the press release.

US release will be SRP $49.98, with a Japanese 24-bit/192kHz 5.1 TrueHD track, a Blu-ray first?

For the Akira BD, are they just picking up the previous re-release materials? I hope some work has been done to remove some additional dirt and kill the EE.

Akira has long been one of my absolute top anime favorites, and I am definitely getting the Blu-ray Disc when it comes out here next February. I've never been without it--I have the LE metal case and DTS editions from Pioneer/Geneon, and before that I had the original Streamline dub and two copies of their subtitled version on VHS (along with the Production Report tape). I even have three versions of the original manga (Kodansha, Epic/Marvel, Dark Horse) and lots of other paraphrenalia besides. I'm a fiend for anything related to this title, and the BD will be more than just icing on my cake.

This is great news. Hopefully the new transfer and soundtrack do not disappoint.

Just so I have my facts straight, this was supposed to come out in August of 2007, but never did. Is this correct?

Either way, this should be worth picking up.

There are quite a few BDs coming out in Japan (Region A) but the problem is none of them have English subs which make them useless to me.

I have to salute Funi for starting to release titles like Samurai 7 over here at affordable prices.

Finally got around to watching Vexille last night. Though the PQ is quite good, the use of a muted, dark color palette sometimes makes it difficult seeing details. AQ is good with the inclusion of a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. While there are many action scenes, none are particularly memorable -- don't expect any spectacular, matrix-style fight sequences. Compared to Deunan, Vexille is a rather pedestrian, somewhat passive heroine. Although this movie has a similar art style, fans of Appleseed and Appleseed EX Machina may be a bit disappointed.

On the long running series? Not likely, and if they do expect "one shots" of the movies. They're hardly releasing any of them with Eng subs anyways.
