All of those screen caps look better than the other review. (Blacks in particular don't look so terribly gray)

I wonder if they just picked better scenes or if the caps were done differently, but Beaver's looks better.

EDIT ADD ON:

Someone correctly pointed out to me the video levels were different on one versus the other. (PC vs VIDEO)

I just read the review and noticed that myself. A 192 kHZ TrueHD 5.1 track seems a little crazy and kind of gimmicky, but I guess it's all part of the "hypersonic" effect designed to make your dog's ears bleed.

Another weirdness is tucking an AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround track as the embedded lossy rider on that, which seems a little wacky considering that the regular AC3 5.1 Japanese track is apparently hidden by that mystifying player menu language selection trick.

Here are some screenshots from the Comcast OnDemand HD showing of Akira a little while ago that match up with some shots from the DVDBeaver review:

The BD obviously has a new transfer. The old transfer looks sharpened (halos in the 2nd shot) so the new transfer is probably a better representation of the film.

This one will make me pick up Paprika... they are both Anime of the Tentacle Holocaust. This BR is very pricey, though. Gonna have to wait for a decent sale.

Guys, I'm a big fan of AKIRA and went so far as to buy the entire colored version of the manga (released by Marvel and supervised by Otomo) and have it bound into hardcover form over seven volumes, with custom dust jackets.

This is the set, with dust jackets...

And this is the set without...

For a closer look at all seven dust jackets, go here and scroll down halfway...

David Banks created the dust jackets for me as an experiment.

Hah, you finally made good on your threat! Looks super spiffy! :-)

Yup, the BD is waaaay better. Compression artifacts almost gone, EE history.

Ooh, mine just turned up, slipcase and booklet intact. Sweet. When I finally sort out the HDMI bass management on my AVR I'll be sure to give Akira a spin.

The problem with Ninja Scroll is that it's all too likely we'll just get the cropped widescreen version.

Even if it takes years for them to come out (please don't let them, though!), I'm just crossing my fingers that Disney presents them like they did the DVDs, with the original Japanese titles available via seamless branching.

I don't feel special...

Well, yeah, there's that too. Though I think Disney has the home video rights to all of them, with the exception of Princess Mononoke, which was an MGM release. We'll probably be waiting many years to get Miyazaki's films on Blu-ray.

As long as they release Sen to Chihiro, Nausicaa and Totoro first, it's cool with me.

At least the current DVD versions of the Ghibli movies are pretty good (picture wise), so it will make the wait a little easier.

No, Mononoke is Disney. It's just that it was released under the Miramax label instead of BVHE.

The Miyazaki movie most people are thinking of when they are thinking of the non-Disney title is Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro. Since it's one of his best, I'm sure many people would love to see that one done well on BD.

And put me down as another vote for an orginal aspect ratio Ninja Scroll. Love to see Metropolis and Steamboy as well.

That is one of the few Miyazaki films that I haven't gotten to see yet.

And it will be really hard for me to pick up Grave of the Fireflies when it comes out, as I will want to watch it, but that is a movie that is very hard to watch a second time.

I'm not as fancy as Xylon (RE: I'm lazy)

I just did a screen cap export out of VLC and upsampled it in Photoshop CS3 using bicubic (smooth) upsampling to 1920 pix wide. It's 1 or 2 frames off. Apologies. Yes, that black line on the right is there. Yes, it's a .jpg, but so is Beaver's. Yes, the EE is horrid on the DVD. ^_^;

DVD on top
Blu-ray on bottom

I don't remember the DVD looking so terrible.

Based on those caps the BluRay looks like a huge improvement.

Anyone else UNable to get the Japenese True HD to come through other than as a 2.0 ??
True HD setup is all good, I use all the time, and I can even get the English True HD to register fine..................but not the Japenese option. Bad disc?

There is a Japanese LPCM 2.0 track, are you sure you're selecting the right track (or that it isn't reverting to that track from some reason)?
