Still can't find any disc rot on mine. Looked on the various discs I just couldn't live without and didn't find any.

Hopefully, a good sign.

Is there an (un)official name for this new phenomenon yet? I would cal it Blu-rot. Is that name fair to use for HD DVDs if they get the same problem?

If the protective coating necessitated on BluRay disks is ultimately proven the culprit, there would appear to be no interim solution except to replace it. Since there has been no proof of a similar problem to date with HD-DVD disks, that coating may indeed be an accurate assessment. The real problem for BD disks in the meantime is that - despite assurances they can play even after being scrubbed with steel wool, etc. - my neighbor with his BluRay player and disks found out they will not withstand ordinary resurfacing with a DiskDr(he learned what the phrase 'Let The Good Times Roll' means after running two of his damaged BluRay rental disks through his DiskDr) as can be done with both standard and HD-DVDs. Appears to be yet another problem with the BD format.

Lets hope this turn out to be a rare occurence. I have mild rot on my prestige. I hope it stops, but it will likely progress until I have to take it over to BVHE and beat them over the head with it .

Just enjoy HD in whatever form you can (Sat, Cable, D-VHS, OTA, HD DVD, or BD).

Jon, this thread has been up for roughly 10 days or so... There are probably hundreds of Blu-ray owners that frequent these threads on a regular basis. I haven't done a formal count but I doubt I would need more than one hand to do so. You can't even be sure all of those are genuine. I did a thread search on a couple of people that left negative comments and lets just say they aren't exactly big boosters of the Blu-ray format. Though I don't doubt there are other defective discs like yours, I am not convinced that it is more than a very isolated problem.

When I worked in ad sales, our magazines usually came from the printer with proper registration and colors were generally spot on. But you know what? Somewhere in those runs there was an occasional problem like an ink spot or the registration would go askew before a press check corrected the problem. In a newly mass produced medium like Blu-ray discs or HD DVDs, to expect perfection is ludicrous. There is absolutely no evidence that this is anything but an isolated production glitch. I would get with the folks at Buena Vista and trade that disc for a new one now.

It should be a question mark rather than an exclamation point at the end of the thread title.

Will these only show up on a disc if the disc has been played?

Prestige -- Spots -- Played once
Departed -- No Spots -- Played once
Stranger Than Fiction -- No Spots -- Never played

302 Blu-ray Discs and counting.

Funny that someone who voted for HD DVD in the HD DVD Forum poll "Who do you WANT to win the format war?" would have such concern with Blu-ray.

you may or may not have been talking about me, but I'm sure I voted in that poll and would have also voted to want HD DVD to win a format war.

But I also just place an order this week for the $500 Sony player...so I hope that gives me a right to express concern over the integrity of this formats software.

Why are you so quick to dismiss the possibility of a problem? Would you have the same nothing-wrong-here attitude if it was HD-DVDs that were exhbiting these signs of rot?

My Prestige looks fine. But as a former laserdisc owner, the fact that so many people here have spotty discs (I know, I know, you think half of them are lying) troubles me deeply.

XA1 + PS3 = HD bliss

You just gotta laugh. Thread searches are fun. I wish you kids would stay in your own back yard.

Interesting. Perhaps you should review one of your own recent posts:

*You* were the one who just asked someone to go make a formal count. I did it
(and you must have a lot of fingers on that one hand of yours)

If you searched a little deeper into my thread history, you will see recent compliments on Bluray selections, and accusations against me for being a Sony viral marketer when I complained about universal. Be careful with your own accusations

First, there was no bashing in my post. I was simply pointing out factual information that I gathered from a thread search. Second, I never requested that anyone do a count. I simply wanted to put comments and activities in their proper perspective. There have been previous posts to the effect that everyone's BD discs were gonna start to rot over time. That stuff is totally uncalled for and I believe the posts should have been removed by the OPs. There is absolutely no indication that this problem is widespread and not just a defect that has infected more than a handful of people and titles. Those that have defective discs seem to have sought replacement and it sounds like they are receiving them. Oddly the only place this problem seems to exist is in this thread on AVS Forum. The other dozen or so forums I go to only refer to this one. For me, that fact throws up a BIG red flag that there may be alotta bull mixed in with a little truth.

Sony DADC does it again, huh... here's hoping it's not widespread and that unlike 10 years ago they actually ADMIT to it if there's a real problem.

You didn't like the information that I posted so you tried to attack me as a poster. If you're going to quote me, at least do it honestly:

This is what you quoted:

Quote:

I won't go as far as some to say that Bill Hunt is on Sony's payroll...

You deceitfully left off the next three words that I actually wrote:

Quote:

Well, I think you hit the nail on the head. I won't go as far as some to say that Bill Hunt is on Sony's payroll (a silly conspiracy, IMO),

Quote:

Second, I never requested that anyone do a count

.

I'm sure all this can and should be erased by the mods soon but your behaviour in this forum is really bordering on the bizarre

paxi, the only reason I can think that Aaron seems to take this so personally is that he must have been harmed as a young child by an optical disc rotting. It must have really upset him.

I just mailed it back 2 days ago.

Disc rot is always a pest. Discs even starting to rot like that so early is a serious indications of problems.

My rotted laserdiscs (and I had a great many of them, which were replaced) never showed any physical signs of distress. It was only when they were played that one could see that there was a problem.
