The version playing in the 2 theaters is 2K by the way. So basically the same as the HD we will get except for more bits per pixel and cinema color gamut and less compression.

How do you know this? I believe the theater in LA has advertised it as 4k.

Ok, I just saw that hollywoodreporter.com piece. Hadn't seen it before.

So, do you know why they couldn't actually project 4k? I haven't really followed digital projection much, but I was under the impression that there had been a few movies shown in true 4k before.

not sure, but the last couple of lines of that link you posted, says that apparently there is only the 2k projectors in use. This is due to technology at the moment. 4k may be out, but possibly too expensive for theaters to use right away.

4K sources at the cinema are still in the testing phase and experimental.

It looks to have been extended through next Thursday (10/18) in LA, btw. I went last Thursday thinking it was the last night and it was absolutely amazing-- never was a huge fan of the movie before, but absolutely loved it this time. Great experience all around. I'm looking forward to the box now!

I just saw it this afternoon at the Landmark in LA. I was told that the projector is a Sony 4k projector. Overall the image quality was very impressive with a lot of detail. There were still quite a few scenes which were rather noisy. The noise looked digital and it was not always when a dark scene occurred. It almost looked like some of these scenes were suffering from quantization effects. The blacks were decent but not as black as the JVC RS1.

From The Digital Bits:

The studio has just informed us that the limited theatrical release of Blade Runner: The Final Cut is expanding to select markets around the country, and some of the screenings are expected to be in 2K resolution digital projection where available. Here's a list of dates and locations (look for more updates on the film's official website):

10/26 - Seattle (Cinerama, Seattle - 35mm),
Washington D.C. (Uptown, D.C. - 35mm),
Portland (Cinema 21, Portland - 35mm),
Salt Lake (Gateway Megaplex, SLC - Digital)

11/2 - Chicago (Music Box, Chicago - 35mm),
Santa Barbara (Arlington, Santa Barbara - Digital),
Baltimore (Landmark Harbor East, Baltimore - Digital)

11/9 - Boston (Coolidge Corner, Brookline - 35mm)

11/16 - Detroit (Main Art, Detroit - 35mm)

11/18 - Austin (Paramount, Austin - 35mm)

11/30 - San Francisco (Embarcadero, San Francisco - 35mm),
Dallas (The Inwood, Dallas - 35mm),
San Diego (Ken, San Diego - 35mm),
Minneapolis (Uptown, Minneapolis - 35mm)

12/7 - Denver (The Landmark @ Greenwood Village - Digital),
Philadelphia (The Ritz 5, Philadelphia - 35mm)

12/25 - Boston (The Brattle, Cambridge - 35mm)

1/2/08 - Austin (The Paramount, Austin - 35mm)

1/4/08 - Nashville (The Belcourt, Nashville - 35mm)

1/18/08 - Durham (Carolina, Durham - 35mm)

2/1/08 - Columbus (Drexel Gateway, Columbus - 35mm)

2/15/08 - San Francisco (Castro, San Francisco - 35mm)

2/29/08 - Sacramento (Crest, Sacramento - 35mm)

Yes, we know... Austin is listed twice. Not sure why - this is what Warner gave us. If you're a fan of Blade Runner, we definitely recommend seeing The Final Cut on the big screen before it arrives on disc on 12/18.

If you have the opportunity, go all the way and see it digitally. Granted, I haven't seen the 35mm print to compare, but the digital projection used in LA was absolutely mindblowing.

I can't believe it.
We are originally from NYC. Moved to the Bay Area 2 years ago. The BR revival opens in NYC and LA, not here.
Now it's coming to SF like 2 weeks after we move back to NYC next month and it's gone from NYC...

It's not gone from NYC. It's still playing on 42nd street...at least for the next week.

I agree!

Now that they have this showing in more theaters, I strongly recommend you see it on the big screen for a great experience.

If it is not showing in digital, like it is in my area, I am sure the 35mm film should be just as good!

Can the specs from Blade Runner (Amazon.com: Language: English, German, Japanese) be proven before release?

The Ultimate Edition will have the same specs, no?

Thx.

Saw it in D.C. Sunday. The print was flawless.

Great picture, great sound, though I don't remember if it had such a blue cast to the color timing before. Scott of course redid the color timing, as he did with Amazon. I remember it being more brownish, but I'll have to check the DVD. It looked great, but reminded me of more modern nighttime fare like Underworld. But it's been a while since I watched it, so maybe it's not as different as I'm thinking.

I see there was a substantial change from the old release to the 2006 restoration; whether the color was tweaked again since then I don't know. It's also possible the reds and browns were oversaturated on video before.

EDIT: According to an August Chud interview, Ridley was just then doing his final sign-off on the color timing, so indeed this version should be different yet. Should make for interesting comparisons.

http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=interviews&id=11285

And it sounds like all other versions will be untouched. Does that mean the old DC version will be the unrestored version, not the 2006 edition? Or does he just mean nothing additional was done to the previously restored DC. He says "as they were in '82", which would make sense for the theatrical, international, and workprint versions, but the 92? cut?

The sound was spectacular and the cleaned up FX make it look like it was made today; actually the FX look more realistic than anything they'd make today. Looks and sounds better than a new film in many ways.

Wish we were getting lossless, but I don't think that's in the specs is it?

During the ComicCon coverage of this one of the guys working on the movie said the workprint edition was only on the briefcase edition. Has anyone else heard this? Please let this not be true!

/Can I borrow your copy of the workprint edition if this is true?

I haven't seen Blade Runner yet(made before I was born). But I'm a big Ridley Scott fan. Which one do I watch first?

I'm guessing directors cut, because the KoH DC was oscar worthy compared to the theatrical release.

And what is the workprint?

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Studio quality tier
Most Major studios>Small Studios>dogs>cats>Warner(the guys that do new movies)

I agree about KoH, but don't watch the DC of Blade Runner first. I would say start with the Final Cut. The FC is similar to the DC, but the DC was sloppy in comparison. After the FC check out the International Cut (which has the narration missing from the FC and DC).

I myself haven't seen the workprint yet but it was an early version of the film which was screened for test audiences before the film was changed and released.

Better not be! It's not the "complete collection" if that's true.

http://www.lasersedge.com/item_detail.asp?id=88932

On Disc 5.

Believe that's the same info that was in the press release. Dig it up on The Bits to be sure.

The price on this set still astounds me. It would be worth getting the briefcase edition if that was the only way to get the complete collection, but what a value without the case!
