Blade Runner: The Final Cut WB Page

Warner Home Video have announced the US Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD release of Blade Runner: The Final Cut on 18th December 2007. The one that started it all. Sir Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford, is one of the most important science-fiction movies of the 20th Century -- the film with immeasurable influence on society for its futuristic depiction of a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world, a film perhaps more powerful and relevant today than when it was made. The film, in fact, has appeared on more Top Five' sci-fi lists than any other film.

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, director Ridley Scott has gone back into post production to create the long-awaited definitive new version, which Warner Home Video will unveil on December 18th in the U.S. Blade Runner: The Final Cut, spectacularly restored and remastered from original elements and scanned at 4K resolution, will contain never-before-seen added/extended scenes, added lines, new and improved special effects, director and filmmaker commentary, an all-new 5.1 Dolby® Digital audio track and more.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut will be included in three stunning DVD editions:

a Two-Disc Special Edition ($20.97 SRP) $14.49 Pre-Order at Amazon

a Four-disc Collector's Edition ($34.99 SRP) $24.49 Pre-Order at Amazon

and the Five-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition ($78.92 SRP) $54.99 Pre-Order at Amazon

Simultaneous HD-DVD and Blu-Ray versions (each $99.95) of the Deckard Briefcase will also be released in numbered, limited quantities. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray 5-Disc Digi Packs with collectible slipcase (each $99.95) will include all of the UCE content.

That UCE content includes

Disc One
RIDLEY SCOTT'S ALL-NEW "FINAL CUT" VERSION OF THE FILM
Restored and remastered with added & extended scenes, added lines, new and cleaner special effects and all new 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio. Also includes:
Commentary by Ridley Scott
Commentary by Executive Producer/ Co-Screenwriter Hampton Fancher and Co-Screenwriter David Peoples; Producer Michael Deely and production executive Katherine Haber
Commentaries by visual futurist Syd Mead; production designer Lawrence G. Paull, art director David L. Snyder and special photographic effects supervisors Douglas Trumbull, Richard Yuricich and David Dryer

Disc Two
DOCUMENTARY DANGEROUS DAYS: MAKING BLADE RUNNER
A feature-length authoritative documentary revealing all the elements that shaped this hugely influential cinema landmark. Cast, crew, critics and colleagues give a behind-the-scenes, in-depth look at the film -- from its literary roots and inception through casting, production, visuals and special effects to its controversial legacy and place in Hollywood history.

Disc Three
1982 THEATRICAL VERSION
This is the version that introduced U.S. movie-going audiences to a revolutionary film with a new and excitingly provocative vision of the near-future. It contains Deckard/Harrison Ford's character narration and has Deckard and Rachel's (Sean Young) happy ending escape scene.

1982 INTERNATIONAL VERSION
Also used on U.S. home video, laserdisc and cable releases up to 1992. This version is not rated, and contains some extended action scenes in contrast to the Theatrical Version.

1992 DIRECTOR'S CUT
The Director's Cut omits Deckard's voiceover narration and removes the "happy ending" finale. It adds the famously-controversial "unicorn" sequence, a vision that Deckard has which suggests that he, too, may be a replicant.

Disc Four
BONUS DISC - Enhancement Archive
Featurette The Electric Dreamer: Remembering Philip K. Dick
Featurette Sacrificial Sheep: The Novel vs. The Film
Philip K. Dick: The Blade Runner Interviews (Audio)

Featurette Promoting Dystopia: Rendering the Poster Art

Featurette Deck-A-Rep: The True Nature of Rick Deckard
Featurette Nexus Generation: Fans & Filmmakers

Disc Five
WORKPRINT VERSION
This rare version of the film is considered by some to be the most radically different of all the Blade Runner cuts. It includes an altered opening scene, no Deckard narration until the final scenes, no "unicorn" sequence, no Deckard/Rachel "happy ending, altered lines between Batty (Rutger Hauer) and his creator Tyrell (Joe Turkell), alternate music and much more.

Also includes:
Commentary by Paul M. Sammon, author of Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner
Featurette All Our Variant Futures: From Workprint to Final Cut

About the Deckard Briefcase' packaging

The Ultimate Collector's Edition will be presented in a unique 5-disc digi-package with handle which is a stylish version of Rick Deckard's own briefcase, in addition each briefcase will be individually numbered and in limited supply. Included is a lenticular motion film clip from the original feature, miniature origami unicorn figurine, miniature replica spinner car, collector's photographs as well as a signed personal letter from Sir Ridley Scott.

I think The Digital Bits has the real scoop on this one. They even have images of the packaging: Bladerunner Details

It doesn't look as if there will be a basic HD/BD offering of this film in a one or two disc edition. I may have to pass on this one because I won't be paying a premium to see multiple versions of this one. If the 5 BD version is around $40 on Amazon I'll swing it but not for more than that. Just my two cents...

I will pay whatever they want for the Deckard Briefcase version. This is probably the most elaborate and best offer for a classic movie ever. WB should be rewarded for going all out with this set and giving Blade Runner fans what we have wanted for decades.

I'm serious I'd pay $500 easily for this set. I expect the Deckard Briefcase version to be about $150 or less though.

Good work WB

This along with the Kubrick collection has made my year.

"i'm getting sick of warner's treatment of blu-ray lately."

Huh? This set is balls to the wall crazy, I would not complain in the least, also the Kubrick set is going to be 2 BD-50 per movie.

You may not complain but others do, myself included. I've sworn off WB releases for the most part since they simply don't look as good as they should in comparison to most other movies I'm getting these days.

Movies are not a right. They are a privilege, a consumer product, art, work for hire, a luxury, a hobby, entertainment.

What happened to the October 2007 that was plastered in all those inserts? Are they pulling a "Harry Potter" on this title too (even though it's only a 2 month delay)?

I'm definately skipping this one (as much as it pains me) if the only HD offering is the expensive collector set. It's a nice movie but it's still just a movie.

The Two disc and 4 disc version are on BD and HDDVD too.

But I so want that case. At least that increases my chance of getting one.
Thanks.

I dunno, it looks like the only BD and HD DVD choices are the 5-disc or the Suitcase.

"plus, why are you still posting on this side of the fence."

Cause I plan to buy the BLU-RAY versions of both Blade Runner and the Kubrick set because of the better audio output of my Panasonic. Got a problem with that?

Seems silly to start boycotting probably the most in depth and extravagant box set ever released for a movie.

it does seem like the hd formats are only available in the briefcase set. shame. i hope they change their mind and sell the blu-ray individually. i love me some blade runner but with Lost season 3, spiderman trilogy, Die hard 4, transformers, POTC, close encounters, ect, this holiday season will be expensive and i could do without the expensive briefcase set.

I'm disappointed that there won't be any Dolby True-HD or Lossless, but as any fan of the film knows, the audio has always been a pretty weak stereo track with limited frequency response. I'll be surprised if they were able to restore/remaster it to the point where it would have benefited from the newer, advanced audio codecs.

Given all of that, if leaving off the (likely average sounding) higher bitrate audio tracks enables us to have 5 versions of the movie, then I think that's a smart compromise.

I love this movie. I'll be pre-ordering the BD Ultimate Collectors Edition. I only wish it was coming out sooner.

I haven't seen anything saying it wouldn't be lossless, just that the DVDs were going to be DD.

One thing I just noticed...

What does a $20.97 SRP amount to at amazon?

Are we talking 15$ for this 2 disc set?

59 Blu-rays and counting...

Yes but the 2 disc set says DVD. It doesn't say anything about Blu-Ray.
