After watching this movie multiple times on various viewing sets I have concluded that this is Blu-ray is without a doubt one of the best HD transfer I have ever seen. The grain of which is the look and style of the movie is never distracting. Sometimes the detail comes down a little bit on some of the darker scenes. But not enough to demote points from the overall PQ.

No EE. No DNR.

This disc also has PiP feature like the ones found on HD DVDs. This disc however is not Profile 1.1 (Resident Evil 3 is and some future titles), there is a separate video stream with the PiP encoded (same as the other release Hairspray). When playing the disc on my PS3, if you enable PiP in the middle of the movie, you will be sent back to the beginning and when its enabled, the movie proper is muted. You only get to hear the PiP commentary.

For some perspective, I have posted some excellent sharp, detailed HD movies with the same look and style. Basically what I'm saying is grainy transfers are not always bad as long as it keeps the sharpness and details consistent. The following are from the movie 300, Children Of Men and The Island.

I love the overall presentation of this movie. The AQ is also top notch, lots of bass, rocking soundtrack and bullets everywhere

My rankings:

1. Hot Fuzz

2. King Kong

3. Apocalypto

4. Shoot 'Em Up

Thats all folks

Wow, check the black letters on the store behind Clive Owen in the third posting! In the SD version I can't read more than a few of the black letters, but in HD every damn sign is perfectly readable. Thanks for the pics Xylon!

The digital master was, obviously, extremely well done. The SD DVD was basically flawless, too (it doesn't get any better for SD-DVD). And you're right, this isn't a "pretty boy" print and the discs reflect it.

Shoot Em Up is hands down one of the very best Blu-ray movies there is PQ-wise. I would put it in the top 5 for sure.

wow that the best comparison I've ever seen. It clearly shows how good hd is. Do you have a cap from a 35mm print :0

I was lucky in the order, but I've always been lucky when it comes to killin' folk - Unforgiven cannot wait for the hd-dvd of this gem

Xylon,

How about comparing a frame of PiP vs. non-PiP on the BD?

Just watched this last night, enjoyed the movie, I thought it was a great spoof of action movies particularily ones from the 80s and 90s.
The presentation was flawless and highly enjoyable. Kick-ass DTS core.

I wonder if Warner will go aheda and still release the planned HD-DVD version since it likely was either already done or being worked on before they made the announcement to go BR exclusive.NL had said it was to be released shortly after the BR version had been on the market for a short time.If they do go ahead and release it, it'll no doubt have real IMEand Dolby True HD.Comparign encodes between the versions might be interestign to considerign each version supposably got it's own.Imo the BR version was excellent.

New Line has already stated that Pan's Labyrinth will be their last and only HD DVD release.

Thanks Xylon for the pics and this thread. Because of this I purchased and just watched this film. The PQ and AQ are excellent and as for the unbelievable aspect of the story like Crank if you like nonstop action just put aside a need fora complex plot and hold on and enjoy the ride.

I think he did with these, not the same frame though:

What is the filesize for the PiP video? Is it 1080i to accomodate the video footage or is it all progressive?

I'm going to go ahead and just buy this one instead of waiting for Netflix.

The comparison with titles like 300 and Children of Men is perfect. Yes, grain is NOT necessarily the enemy, especially vs. the use of DNR.

I still think Children of Men is one of the best looking titles I have seen to date.

I find it interesting that there apparently is no DNR here, yet DNR was used on Pan's Labyrinth.
