I have a chance to pick up a year old A30 for $100. Is this a fair price?
You are going to get very different answers. But it does depend on your need. You will find many guys who have bought A30s or A35s for $15-$50 in the last few months for sure. I even bought an XA2 nine months ago for $150(as have others).
If you are buying from an individual with no warranty I tend to think that right now $100 is too high. But if it is MINT and you can trust the seller to stand behind it then $100 may still be too high..lol. But the value definitely gets better.
Plus you need to decide if you must have the A30. If that player is a must for you then maybe you spring for the deal. If the A30 is not a must, there are other HD DVD players that can be had for much less if you look around.
I think allargon's price is about right if you get everything in working order. NIB with the two movies might be worth $100.
The A30 is a great player and you see them anywhere from $30 on up on ebay. I just picked up a bare player on the bay, no remote or power cord for $37 shipped. It works fine and replaced my original A30 that's now in its original box as a backup.
If you sell on Amazon, a factory sealed new in box can still fetch $250-$300. ebay is always cheaper, around $200 probably for a new sealed A30 when they show up.
$100 for a used one is high market value. For $100 it should be flawless, and like new condition with box, manual, all packaging. Used in working condition can be had for as low as $50 on fleabay. allargon had it right.
as much as i love my a-30 i think 100 may be a bit too much. i would try to convince the seller that hd-dvd is a dead technology and that u won't pay more than $75 unless he sweetens the deal with an 8-track and beta machine... that's how i got a deal on mine.
I've got an A1, A2 and A30 and I have to say I still like the A1 (only one of my three that has 5.1 analog). Sure it's a little pokey, but they sure cost a lot less. If you have a great scaler on your display or a discrete video scaler, the 1080i shouldn't make a huge difference. Otherwise, step up to the XA2/A30/A35 for 1080p. According to the internet, it's actually possible to flash the A30 to an A35, to support TrueHD and DTS-HD MA bitstreaming. In the process of that right now

Good luck! I've always wondered if that would work. I kinda think the hardware for HDMI is the same but the A30 firmware is neutered. It can't be as easy as just flashing A35 firmware to the A30, Toshiba probably has the A30 check the code and stop that. But if that part of the A35 code could be modded to what the A30 expects I bet it would add that feature.
I have one that I'm selling as of yesterday for $70 shipped (lower 48). It was a living room player...didn't get used but maybe 10 times. The player resides in ventilated cherry cabinet and non-smoking environment. I have the player, power cord, and original remote. If you are interested, let me know. I can also send photos if you wish.
