I currently have an Xbox 360 with the HD-DVD drive and a growing collecting of HD-DVD movies.
I want to upgrade to a better featured, more future proof player.

*Must bitstream True-HD, DD+, and DTS-MA over a HDMI 1.3 connection (my new reciever will be doing the decoding)
*1080p output
*5.1 or better analog outputs (temporary till i get my new reciever)
*good compatibility with all HD-DVDs (minimum issues)
*upconversion is not that important (getting DVDO-Edge)

From what I have read, my options are rather limited to XA-2(or HD805), A35, and the BD-UP5000. If there are any other options please chime in??
I'm not too keen on the BD-UP5000 as it seems to have a lot of issues.

Apologies if this topic has been covered but a 10+ page tread requires a lot of time to read. A Constructive suggestion would be an up to date simplified thread covering HD-DVD models and their features.

First off welcome to AVS.

I have two players the A2 and the A20 which serve my needs very well. If I were to purchase another player and I wanted all "the bells and whistles" I would hands down go for the XA2/Onkyo first, and the A35 second. The Onkyo will demand a premium over the XA2 or the A35, but it is basically the internal clone of the XA2.

I dont think you could go wrong with the XA2 or the A35.

Hope this helps.

Sorry - no other options for your specs than the ones you listed, Dave. Fortunately those are good choices.

Now if you reconsidered and let the player doing the decoding, which many of us think is superior since you get audio from both the feature film and all special features (which may be muted if you bitstream), then you could add cheaper players to your list.

If I were to let the player do the decoding what are the other options?
(still want True HD/DD+ decoding, and 1080P-HDMI output)

Also, What are the differences between the XA2 and the A35? (besides the upscaling chip)

Well you could add the A30 to your list if you let it decode and pipe LPCM up the HDMI cable, plus you get 1080p. Your eyes won't see the receiver indicate TrueHD, DD+ but it'll sound the same to your ears.

Most people think the XA2 is more robust than the A35 but featurewise they're very similar if you don't care about upconversion. Even that is debatable with the latest firmware.

I picked up onkyo just last week, waiting for it to arrive, I have heard good reviews about them.

Its too bad the firmware on the A30 can't be hacked to bitream THD/DD+/MA audio over HDMI, Or Has it been hacked ??

From what I have read/seen pics the A30 and A35 use the same board, but difference being the HDMI chip and no analog out(a30).
I wonder what the difference is between the HDMI chips?
Has anyone tried A35 firmware on an A30?

Would be awesome if there was a region free, THD/DD+/MA bitstream over HDMI capable Firmware for the HD-A30.

I read that this was attempted on the European version of the A30 and did add new functionality but not bitstreaming TrueHD. Of course that hacked firmware wouldn't help us since the player is PAL not NTSC. Don't think it's been done on our side of the pond but I'd love to be proved wrong though!

one thing to note... as far as i am aware none of the players will internally decode DTS-HD so you will only get the regular DTS core track if you do internal decoding

in the end it really depends on if you have enough DTS-HD discs to justify the extra cost... me personally if i had the money and a receiver that decoded DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD i'd swap my A20 out for an XA2 quicker than you can say "but i only have 3 discs with DTS-HD" (i could always use the "better upscaling" arguement)

Samsung BD-UP5000 should be your first choice.
The LG BH200 for second.
About the Toshiba XA-2 for third.

If you're going in reverse order of player quality and output, I can think of players which would rank even higher.

I nominate Venturer for #1 on your reverse list.
